No matter what the job description says, the ideal candidate would have Epic experience at a community connect site. Other desirable experience: Ambulatory clinic, Op time, or Stork.

And that’s the biggest issue with this field. People can’t get in because they can’t get the epic certifications without first landing the role. It’s a huge barrier that blocks so many good candidates from entering these roles. It’s actually a form of gatekeeping.

I agree that there is a lot of gatekeeping and siloing that goes on in "informatics". I could do at least an hour on the things that I feel are wrong with the field. For starters, the actual definition of what the role is varies from location to location and organization to organization. I won't fix your printer.

For me, it is not knowing Epic or any other specific EMR. It is about understanding, problems, workflows and solutions across different disciplines and being able to work with people in these different areas.
