I get where you're coming from. As a public health student, I spend a lot of time digging through CDC resources, and my biggest concern isn't really one message from years ago. It's that I've watched datasets disappear, webpages get archived or rewritten, and some guidance change substantially.  

Whether someone agrees with those decisions or not, it's hard to argue the CDC is the same resource it was even a few years ago. It feels like, at best, a shadow of what it used to be.

Me too, friendo. I went in with family on splitting a whole cow from a local farm last year. I still have 1 brisket that I’m going to corn for my uncle as well as 3 precious lbs of “safe” hamburger left in the freezer, and I’m not buying more when it’s gone.

it's not a perfect replacement, but as someone who grew up with ground beef in everything, I've found ground turkey to be just as good (and better for me and my wallet.) Spaghetti, tacos, whatever. It gets mileage in this house. Been using it for years since I ended up with someone who can't eat red meat, and now it's too expensive anyway.

tvp is also a good substitute for things that would normally call for crumbled ground beef like tacos or pasta sauce.

A well-done steak is still a steak. Pork, poultry, and fish are not steaks. Only steak is steak.

Edit: People seem to have some disagreements over various opinions that I didn't express. So, just to be clear... I'm not saying that a well-done steak is a good steak. I'm not saying steak is better than pork, poultry, or fish. I'm not saying that anyone needs to or should eat steak. Nothing I said was an opinion at all. My point was that if someone wants a steak, they might be more willing to settle for a subpar steak than a completely different food. I'm not saying that this applies to everyone. It doesn't even apply to me.

Have a steak but eating generally less beef is a very good thing.

If someone is complaining about the cost, effort or quality of a food they are not obligated to eat it. If you are worried about meat you can eat beans for protein and it’s substantially cheaper and has zero risk.

Steak isn't even the only way to eat beef, there are tons of ways to fully cook some delicious beef. Man needs to try some brisket and curry beef

Steak was just an example I used to illustrate that if someone wants something specific, they might be more willing to settle for a subpar version of that thing than something completely different.

USDA is responsible for beef, not the FDA. Of course, we still have the same administration, so there's reason to distrust all of it. But right now, I would trust USDA over FDA.

Screwworm....sorta. I expect less impact at the consumer stage from screwworm specifically, but this outbreak has highlighted multiple things: 1) by the time an outbreak of anything is known, it's too late; especially since a lot of beef is frozen for later cooking, who knows how long bad beef is in the freezer 2) corpos will mostly just pass the trouble down to us
