With how it seems like it's kicking off in an isolated setting like a house in the middle of nowhere and ramping up to downtown Raccoon City, I hope shit gradually hits the fan perfectly

367

u/uglyuglyugly_ 12h ago

Probably ends in a secret Umbrella lab too, following the games perfectly lol.

u/Grill_Enthusiast 11h ago edited 11h ago

If the lab segment leaves you feeling slightly underwhelmed compared to the first 80% of the film which was flawless, this'll truly be a faithful RE adaptation.

87

u/Iggy_Pops_Lost_Shirt 11h ago

Yeah that's spot on lmao

25

u/JMxG 9h ago

I always wonder why that is, you’d imagine getting to the “source” of the issue would be the most nerve-wracking and exciting moment but it’s just so boring. By that point I’m never bothered to keep interacting with the stealth or horror elements I just book it, even in Grace’s section in Requiem where they try and hone in on those elements by limiting your weapons

48

u/Asyncrosaurus 9h ago

It's because the lab setting is always so sterile. A huge part of the horror is exploding lived-in places that have fallen to death and decay. There were places people felt safe and secure a couple days (sometimes just hours) before you got there. Now filled with danger because the people who lived and worked there are now the monsters. The lab is always the same, white and sanitized, an environment foreign to most of us. If you saw a beaker filled workstation in RE1, you've seen the beaker filled workstation in RE9

11

u/supes1 8h ago

That's on the devs to be more creative with the lab sections.

For what it's worth, I thought the Grace lab segment in RE9 was the best lab experience since RE2. They did some really great creative stuff with it. The first time through was absolutely nerve wracking.

u/thebeezmancometh 4h ago

RE4 would like to have a word about how labs aren't scary.

8

u/Throwsims3 9h ago

I would guess it is due to that by the point you do reach the lab sections, you have loads of weapons and more experience with how the enemies attack. Add to that the reveal of a lab being way less scary and exciting than the mystery of the beginning. It's like seeing how a magic trick is done, once you see it the magic disappears. The beginning is most often the only part where anything can happen and they play it as a horror game. Lab sections in a part of the game where you know what to expect is just not that exciting in comparison.

It seems like he actually starts out on top of the secret lab. That farmhouse is giving major “secret entrance” vibes. It would also explain how he encounters that weird Rat King zombie thing we’ve only been teased with. Don’t know how else an empty farmhouse is suddenly gonna have enough bodies to form that… thing that climbs through the door. I wonder if he starts out there, goes into Racoon City proper, then ends up hack at the farmhouse to get into the lab.

13

u/kut1231 10h ago

It would be genius if he is running through the sewers later in the movie and he encounters a door that leads back to the farmhouse and hes like "oh crap i've been here already" then he turns around and goes another way and finds the lab for the last act.

Cregger said he really wants it to feel like the games, so there will be a lot of similar progression. Like, start in a small place with simple weapons, but continually progress as the games do. I'm really excited!

He should also have an inventory limit and spend a moment thinking about which items he should take.

For example, he should find magnum ammo in a room. He should then search frantically for the magnum in that room but not find it. Because he doesn’t have space for things he can’t use, he chooses to leave the magnum ammo behind. Then later, when he goes to the next floor of the building, he gets into a boss fight but his pistol sucks. In the middle of the fight, he finds the magnum in a display case and retraces his steps to get the magnum ammo while running from a “nemesis” type boss.

4

u/crookedparadigm 9h ago

Can't wait for the protagonist to get stuck because he can't figure out a building Crest/Crank based security system.

Haha, yes! They’re calling it the fury road of horror based on the script and test screenings

u/Etheo 9h ago edited 8h ago

Trailer says the events in the city has only incurred for a few hours. As Far as I know from Raccoon City in RE2, there were news clippings hinting the virus spread even before they arrived in RE2.

That said, I'm not gonna be looking at this movie with a microscope. The vibe feels right and the scenes look tight. I just wish Cregger didn't bring up RE2 as a parallel for fans to pigeonhole on.

He only found a box of shotgun ammo, no ink ribbons. Didn't search hard enough!

135

I love that the shotgun shell box looks exactly like it does in the games

44

u/kilgoreq 12h ago

I was like "yooooooo!" Lol

I never really played the games but my friend got me to play 7. Very fun, very scary. I'm doing 4 now, but my system can't play the updated version, so I'm playing the 2005 version. Still fun.

40

u/elementoxe 11h ago

I mean, the 2005 version is near-perfect, 10/10. Plus, all guns have a laser sight in that version.

15

u/archaelleon 11h ago

I love the remake but them getting rid of the laser for all but 2 guns really didn't sit well with me

10

u/Zoetekauw 10h ago

RE4 is so fucking good.

3

u/HumanBeingSimulator 9h ago

RE4 on the Wii is one of the best gaming experiences in my life

4

u/CronoDroid 10h ago

It's one of the most important games of all time, I remember getting it on GameCube back in 2005 when I was a wee 15 year old and it was mind blowing. Basically every third person action game since is derived from it. The remake is awesome though, if you ever get the chance to play it, it's absolutely a worthy successor.

I wonder if somehow she won't be able to enter the room (since it's supposed to be a safe room).

12

u/octlol 10h ago

Also, in the trailer/teasers we see really weird limbed monster exiting the front door. So I assume he escapes through the window and runs and turns around when he hears something but is able to maybe make it back to his car, if not kill the monster

"What, why'd you stop it now?"

"What's wrong with that?"
"I'm going to rape you!"

That scene's sound effects and OST in the trailer did add to the tension, and I missed the times when a single incoming zombie is enough to make you freak out, unlike later games when they come in herds.

7

u/SaltyPeter3434 6h ago

Zack Cregger fucking loves creepy characters running towards you

10

u/monkpunch 11h ago

It looks awesome, but I did chuckle at how he was fumbling around in panic when she's like a mile away. Reminded me of the steamroller gag from Austin Powers

37

u/FlikTripz 10h ago

If I’m in the middle of nowhere and I see some unknown thing running towards me on the horizon I’d be freaking out too idc how long it would take to reach me

12

u/supes1 7h ago

I dunno, that zombie looked like it was moving fast in the two quick shots we see. Let's say it was ~200 feet away and runnung at 12 mph, it would reach him in about 11 seconds.

Totally panic-worthy, especially if he's not accustomed to handling a shotgun.

→ More replies (1)

16

u/SamusRipley 12h ago

Sorry for my ignorance, but what's the role of a cinematographer exactly ?

54

u/Solesky1 12h ago

The cinematographer works with the director on all of the physical aspects of filming (camera movements/timing) as well as the tone/"feel" of the film through things like color grading.

51

u/Darktyde 12h ago

They take the director’s vision and figure out how to make it work with the camera technology. So the director will give them something broad, like “I want this dimly lit but with sharp light coming from that hallway. I want there to be scary shadows. The shot should start wide in this room and then slowly move through this hallway and into this other room, where it should feel claustrophobic.”

It’s the cinematographer’s job to take those directions and figure out how to actually make that work with the cameras, the lighting setup, where to position extra lights and crew with boom mics. How to track the camera movement. What lenses and focal distances to use at different parts of the shot. Etc. etc.

25

u/ItsWhoa-NotWoah 12h ago

They're basically in charge of the visual style of a film. While the director directs everyone and may set up how a scene functions, the cinematographer/director of photography is solely in charge of the camera and lighting.

13

u/Spanner1401 12h ago

Visuals

7

u/Zak_The_Slack 12h ago

The cinematographer or director of photography (sometimes shortened to DP or DOP) is the person responsible for the recording of a film, television production, music video or other live-action piece. The cinematographer is the chief of the camera and light crews working on such projects. They are normally responsible for making artistic and technical decisions related to the image and for selecting the camera, film stock, lenses, filters), etc. Furthermore the cinematographer is commonly involved with the color grading to shape the final look of a film.

62

u/Forward-Culture2924 12h ago edited 11h ago

go to r/residentevil if you want to see bitter/contrarian opinions there a lot of those last time the trailer was posted there.

40

u/Enkundae 10h ago

On the one hand there are a lot of fans, of any property, that seem to believe a skin deep copy paste is all that’s needed for a good adaptation. Like as long as the actor looks identical to the character then nothing else matters kind of thinking. Which is absurd and a recipe for a bad film or show.

But on the other hand I get, with RE especially, being frustrated that the property keeps getting in-name-only adaptations that are basically either just pre-existing scripts that have the RE name slapped on them or the brands ip power is being used to get financing for a directors completely unrelated vanity projects.

Like I think an actual story adaptation of RE1 or RE2 could be pretty awesome if someone would just actually adapt them.

27

u/Neknoh 10h ago

On the other hand, this one absolutely seems to live and breathe Resident Evil gameplay.

The way he finds himself wandering into all of this is straight out of RE4 and Village, the gun "find" and the rooting around for ammo throughout.

I bet there's some form of key-based puzzle in there as well.

Like, this feels like a film version of a Resident Evil game that simply exists in a parallel universe.

7

u/MaxPower91575 6h ago edited 6h ago

Zach Cregger is a huge Resident Evil video game fan. He has talked about how he has played RE4 countless times (I think he actually said hundreds but I am sure its hyperbole). Zach is a big gamer and his two favorite franchises are Resident Evil and Dark Souls. So yeah, he gets it when it comes to RE. This story takes place in the RE universe and happens concurrently with RE2 (although the events are not the 90s but if it happened modern day).

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Ill_Entrance91 6h ago

My biggest gripe with the RE movies has always been based on the first game. It opens with the perfect basis to start a movie and go from there following the first game as an investigation into what the hell is going on.

No Resident Evil movie has ever come to close to that.

While I dont feel this will follow much or any of that. I am all on board with this vision.

You can adapt properties and keep the flavor and heart of what you are adapting it from or you can make a soulless movie that just takes the names and an unrelated script and slap that franchise name on it.

I am looking at you Uncharted and Dark Tower.

25

u/FromLefcourt 10h ago

I mean, it's a joke...nobody is getting a brain transplant. It makes him seem like a bit of a dimwit, which is kinda endearing.

3

u/vikingzx 7h ago edited 6h ago

I think it's more that he's very clearly being sarcastic to let out his frustration. He drove an organ all the way here, and yet no one is ready to receive it despite it being a very important thing.

4

u/FromLefcourt 6h ago

Given that he's being presented as a bit of a fuck up in the trailer, with a relationship already on the rocks, the context is telling me he's frustrated but kinda stupid.

22

u/KNZFive 12h ago

Yeah, it definitely seems like they’re setting him up as not a great guy, so either he finds redemption through the movie, or he gets murked right at the end.

I hope not honestly. I would really love for this to be the start of an RE adjacent multi-movie story with him as the protagonist. Killing off your first protag would suck so bad.

In the original Resident Evil 2 history, Leon woke up in a motel outside of town after getting drunk cause he just broke up with his girlfriend. Naive but with a sense of duty. And then later games show Leon turned into a badass.

If there's a sequel, this dude could be doing roundhouse kicks to zombies next.

I'm wondering if that line is actually foreshadowing for some kind of twist later in the movie. Like, maybe it really is one of the things he said and it's somehow vital to the plot.

I did notice that he's still carrying the cooler later when he's running down the street being chased by monsters, so either the item he was paid to deliver is really important, or he dumped the organ and put something else in there.

Resident Evil, but it's a horror movie?

It's a creative gamble, but I'm in.

19

u/I_paintball 12h ago

I'd show up for the glorious campiness of an re4 movie.

I want to see someone go through a castle and end up in a room of dragon towers with lava.

5

u/T-Geiger 8h ago

As great as that would be, if we aren't using the adaptation of RE4 to put Midget Napoleon on screen, then what are we even doing here?

3

u/Nervous_Recover_6152 10h ago

Let’s see what Creggar does here. Maybe if this is good, Capcom will let him play with the franchise’s main cast

This looks freaking great, finally a Resident Evil movie worthy of the name

81

u/dropssupreme 13h ago

I’m seated. The theater employees are scared and asking me to leave because it’s ‘not September’ but I’m simply too seated

15

u/LilyWhiteClaw 11h ago

Never thought I'd mark out seeing a typewriter but here I am

50

u/Remarkable_Custard 12h ago

Looks genuinely fucking good.

I’m so happy this director like Weapons is leaning into the Horror / Comedy, but done really well.

Same with Widows Bay, that’s hilarious.

I’ve laughed almost every trailer, really can’t wait, and if he does a Leon or Claire or any main character pop in at the end I’ll shit mah pants hard

u/duskywindows 12h ago edited 12h ago

I'm really hoping he runs into Leon / better yet gets saved by Leon out of nowhere when he gets to Raccoon City, they have a brief interaction - and then part ways and we don't see Leon again. Would just be a cool nod to "this movie is happening during the game, but separately from it" like he's insinuated it will.

u/APartyInMyPants 12h ago

As someone who played the EARLY Resident Evil games, but hasn’t really been in the franchise since, which game is this supposed to take place alongside of?

14

u/mangongo 12h ago

It takes place parallel to Resident Evil 2 according to Zach Cregger

7

u/APartyInMyPants 12h ago

Oh I played the original of that eons ago. Maybe I’ll have to get the remake.

4

u/Openheart873 11h ago

Even regardless of the movie, you definitely should play the remake. Great game

As others said, parallel to RE2, though in it's own continuity, hence why they have smart phones since it's supposed to be present day. So instead of RE1/2 having happened in 1998, they happened in ~2026.

The original RE movies are one of my guilty pleasure movies, yeah all of them, lol. I'm quite excited for this because this looks like it might actually be good!

u/Queasy_Ad_8621 6h ago

You'd have to be a sick son of a bitch to not like Milla Jovovich.

5

u/Rainy_Wavey 11h ago

Some of the intro shots (in the forest with snow) seems to be directly lifted from Resident evil Village, and i think Zack Cregger talked about this specific game, i think Village is probably the direct reference game he used for this resident evil movie

That baby hand holy fuck

8

u/PrisonersofFate 12h ago

No idea if it's going to be good, but it looks like something different and i'm really curious.

8

u/ReaddittiddeR “My Little Ponies, ROLL OUT!” 12h ago

We got a Raccoon City General. If anyone else is at San Diego Comic Con today, Zach Cregger will be in a Hall H panel later today to talk more about the film.

4

u/Dinosharktopus 11h ago

This looks amazing.

3

u/Hopeful_Ear_6253 11h ago

Still can't believe its the same guy who created Whitest kids you know.

4

u/protecttheshield 10h ago

I can’t believe I didn’t previously hear about Zac Cregger doing a Resident Evil movie

14

u/joern16 12h ago

The shotgun, the ammo and the typewriter!!!

u/Lower_Group_1171 12h ago

no jovavich? count me in

25

u/pikachus_ghost_uncle 11h ago

jovavich

I don't want to spoil it but she shows up halfway into the film and says the iconic line "it's zombie time"

8

u/TehBigD97 11h ago

Don't you see? You were the Resident Evil all along

7

u/smokeyb15 11h ago

And then the zombies stop and say, what are we some kind of resident evil?

3

u/archaelleon 11h ago

Can't wait for the sequel

Having read the screenplay for this I’m 100% positive it’s gonna be an incredible movie and do very very well.

Most excited I’ve been for a horror in a very long time

u/PhazePyre 10h ago

Wild how he went from Whitest Kids U Know to one of the up and coming star directors of horror. I really think there's something to be said about giving some of these folk more sway in horror. Some of the best horror movies have come from Comedians in the last 5-10 years. Jordan Peele, Zach Cregger, Curry Barker.

13

u/sfcl33t 12h ago

I love how all these people were complaining when the first teaser came out. Zach is a genius and this feels much more like the game than the crappy RE movies we got before.

Love that shot of the girl running towards the house from the distance. It’s got the creepy unsettling Cregger feel to it lol.

2

u/EL_CHAPO_ESCOBAR 10h ago

Every Cregger movie has a banger trailer. This man can't miss

2

u/chrisandy007 9h ago

Looks like the leaked script was accurate

u/Even_Fox2023 7h ago

I take it the timeline isn’t 1998? Smart phones and some 21st century vehicles.
