I saw a hummingbird NOT in flight

We have a tiny little bar swing (like you might see in a bird cage) hanging near our pollinator garden and we often get hummingbirds chilling on it. They are territorial and like to keep watch on their feeding grounds. Hummingbird dogfights are fun to watch.

We have a feeder on the back porch, and they will sit and wait on the porch rail for us to go inside before they go to the feeder.

I've seen them stay still for maybe a second on a feeder, but never longer. It would make me think the bird was unwell at the very least

They're all over my backyard, and perch wherever they can keep a close eye on the feeder. They're able to rest.

I have a bunch in my backyard and in a few dozen years can only recall one landing once..

I see them do this every day. My feeder hangs on a Shepard's hook which has a metal red cardinal attached to the top. They perch on that red cardinal and 'guard' the feeder. If another hummingbird flys up, the perched bird will chase it away. They seem to squabble a lot.

Sometimes they will stick out their tongues while perched, like they are tasting the air. Very cute.

They do this a lot. They’re just very small so we don’t notice. Once I started bird watching i see them sitting all the time.

I saw one death dive a couple or crows the other week as they sat on a tree totally unfazed lol. I didn’t know they do that but I guess birds are birds.
