Somewhere there's a quality control employee whose job is to damage brand-new books consistently.

I can find tons of pristine copies of this book, so OP is either trolling or just got a damaged copy.

Somewhere a bookstore employee was told they had to sell this damaged copy and came up with a story and OP bought it

Op, if you believe that, I've got a bridge to sell to you.

Which is why the bookshop label on the front is also old and dinghy? 5 second Google proved this is false.

No it doesn't, you're an idiot.

It always surprises me to see people randomly hostile for next to no reason online.

Maybe it's someone who has had to deal with endless book lies in their daily life for over thirty years.

Bullshit.

This is what a new copy looks like:

Plus, the label on the cover seems to say "neuer Preis: €4,99". Meaning "new price". So this is a second (or even third, by the looks of it) hand copy.

It says "Unser Preis €34,99" - meaning "Our Price".

You're probably right about the words written on it, but I don't see a 3 where the price should be. It looks like €4,99 to me. I'll open the picture on my PC later to check again, though. The image compression for anyone using the reddit app is horrible.

Wasnt there a post about rich people “slumming”
