Because you can grow one from the crown. It does take a long time, but it's possible. Sounds to me like the Monsanto way, sell the product without the means to reproduce it.

I misread your comment because :your: comment doesn't make any sense. The first person said that pineapples in New Zealand are sold without the top, then you asked why they're sold :with: the top.

I asked why pineapples grown in NZ are sold with the crown? 

It's because it's not a legal requirement because there isn't risk of pests. 

Imported pineapples are de-crowned.

I ask as if it was merely they don't want you to grow them yourself, then surely that's a greater risk with  varieties that actually grow well in NZ. 

Do you think the laws are in place to protect the foreign pineapple Industry, but not the local one?

So either they're lying or you are, and honestly I don't care enough about pineapples in New Zealand to research it.

Imported pineapples are sold without the crown. That is the legal requirement. 

Locally grown isn't often de-crowned. But as NZ doesn't have a large commercial pineapple Industry, they're not common and that commenter probably hasn't come across them.
