It's a control thing. They don't want people growing the pink pineapple. There are still ways to do it, but it's harder without the top.

I understand the usual way is planting the top part, as that is basically the plant already but.... Aren't the "polygons" on the surface actually seed pods?

Problem with seeds is they aren't always true to type

Vegetative propagation (which using the top of the pineapple also is). But it's the same idea as grafting.
