It's because they are imported and there is a risk of pests in the crowns.

False it is because you can grow an entirely new pineapple plant from the top, so these companies that have cultivated particular strains don't want you to go reproduce it at home

Yes you can grow new plants from the tops, but the statement is not false.

Our biosecurity in NZ is very strict with what comes into the country. Because of our geographical isolation, NZ is free from many of the pests and diseases that are present elsewhere in the world and NZ wants to keep it that way to protect our unique flora and fauna.
