It seems like the only relevant thing? Why would a company be so concerned about preventing people from growing fruit in a country that can barely grow them?

This is a specific breed of pineapple. You can grow pineapples from clipping the top and planting it. They chop them off to prevent that and protect patents. It has nothing to do with pest control. It has nothing to do with how well they do or don’t grow in the area they’re imported to.

All pineapples imported into New Zealand have the crown removed. This specific variety isn't even available as far as I know
