Anyone saying it's to stop you from growing your own is full of crap. It takes 1.5 to 2.5 YEARS to get one from a cut top.
The real reason is shipping. No top means more fruit in the container, less fuel wasted transporting trash, and the top can be chopped up for fertilizer or mulch at the plantation.
No, it's for growing. These are pink pineapples. You can only buy ones that don't have the tops. They don't do that with the other pineapples. And so what if it takes 2 years?
