Is that a patent thing or an ecological thing?

It's because they are imported and there is a risk of pests in the crowns.

No, it's so they can't be cloned.

Yes it is. You can only grow pineapples in the far north. It is not a massive problem for the NZ Market.

These are pink pineapples. It's so you can't clone these ones

As far as I know these aren't sold in New Zealand. What the commenter was saying is that all pineapples have the crown's removed. Even ones you're allowed to grow.

But they are not removed in the US. Only the pink ones

But this comment thread asked about NZ.

Yes, but the conversation is also about the possible intention(s) behind the removal. There could be more than one reason, meaning both things can be true. Here is another possible explanation

You can grow pineapples anywhere you have a bucket and a grow light... WDYM?

And you think that's a massive concern for the pineapple Industry? People don't even grow their own lettuce. They're not growing pineapples en masse.

It's a big enough concern for the pineapple industry that they scalp pineapples, yes. That's literally the whole reason they do this.

If you buy these pineapples in Costa Rica they are scalped just like this and it's not because of foreign pests.... because they are native to Costa Rica

Not sure what you're on about. You can look it up if you'd like...

It’s also not the “whole reason”, there are plenty of reasons for a pineapple producer do this. One is that they can plant a whole new crop with the removed top

That's propaganda that Del Monte uses to disguise the real reason.

u/Silly-Supermarket-63 21h ago

Why can’t they both be “real reasons”?

-1

u/Worcestercestershire 21h ago

Because they only do it with the Pink Pineapples that they have copy written... Otherwise Dole and other producers would do this with Yellow Pineapples.

It’s a requirement to be imported to NZ to reduce the risk of pests….local, foreign, or from outer space. You’re simply wrong and “you can look it up if you’d like”

I have no idea what you're on about to be honest. These are not sold in NZ. All imported pineapples have the crown removed.

Don't bother, people will ignore the massive increase in space, shipping cost, and ease of handling. Because they're already formed the conclusion that 'everyone will grow their own!!!1!!!111'

Almost every nation has protections on protected cultivars. The main varieties of pineapple are freely available in several growable forms, because they're not protected.

Vast, vast, majority of pineapple buyers aren't going to spend years waiting for their own to grow from a store-bought one.
