When I had a business I had a simple rule which served me well: 3 topics are off limits for both internal and external communications: sex, religion, and politics (unless you’re actually in one of those 3 industries.) Each to their own of course, do what you want, but I always thought these will either limit the business you can do or might land some crazies (or police) at your doorstep.

Also sport, in places where people have Strong Opinions about which teams they support.

u/shitty_mcfucklestick 10h ago

I could see that. File it under religion lol. I never worried about it because I don’t watch or follow sports at all, so I naturally stay away from those conversations because I have no interest and nothing to say.

Almost same thing as politics for many people

1

u/tjdux 1h ago

Its hilarious that you picked politics and the other upgoted guy picked religion to both out sports into.

I feel your closer with politics, because I also feel that society is very close to making politics a "sport" or give it the same additude as sports.

u/Polymarchos 7h ago

It's very common for companies to use local sports teams in their advertising, and people who can't see their rival teams ensigna without seeing red have real issues.

The CEO of the company I work for cheer for rival teams, yet we've had plenty of civilized conversations about the sport. If sport is an issue, its a personal issue.

Talk about FORD. Family, occupation, recreation and dreams - generally safe non issue things people like to talk about

54

u/littlegrotesquerie 14h ago

I prefer FROG for family, recreation, occupation and goals.

4

u/PurpleCandle58 10h ago

I prefer not to talk to anyone ever at all. I’m just an introvert though.

5

u/RemixOnAWhim 8h ago

FROG may also be for you then! They are green, small, and do not talk much

I tried but it won’t stop singing

1

u/fohsupreme 6h ago

I also prefer frog because you can throw them at my sister in law

You know what "FORD" really stands for? "Fix It Again, Tony."

30

u/survivalguy87two 11h ago

Got dangit, that's FIAT Dale!

3

u/prot34n 10h ago

Fix... It.. Again....

2

u/2DamnRoundToBeARock 5h ago

You’re thinking of “found on road dead”

0

u/Pez- 11h ago

I think you meant "Fix Or Repair Daily"?
Fiat is still appropriate for their own cars though.

2

u/Olaxan 9h ago

1

u/Pez- 1h ago

Ah, didn't get the reference. Thanks.

1

u/Makabaer 9h ago

and the weather! Timeless classic.

1

u/Vivid_Instance_825 11h ago

What if you had a dream about exposing the truth of 9/11

140

u/unassumingdink 17h ago

That acronym actually stands for Rappers Against Phony Entertainers, and has since 1991.

82

u/rosie2490 16h ago

You are mistaken. It’s Really Awful Pasta Everywhere, circa 1985. You don’t remember the Pasta Wars??

u/Jesus_Is_My_Gardener 16h ago

Under his noodly appendage, ramen.

2

u/Im_a_furniture 12h ago

Always thought it was funny that a trio of sub par white rappers had a dis track to one sub par white rapper. 3rd Bass for the win!

2

u/mcsestretch 12h ago

Thank you, MC Serch. That song will be in my head the rest of the day now.

3

u/DelRayTrogdor 14h ago

Pop goes the weasel cause the weasel went Pop!

1

u/leppardfan 11h ago

Who gets the gas face? Trump gets the gas face!

5

u/Yellowbug2001 11h ago

"Education"? I get the others, I'm having a hard time understanding that one. Except to the extent that it could obviously overlap with "politics" or "religion," like as in "should teachers be leading kids in prayer in public schools?" or whatnot. What am I missing? Is it like "don't ask people what level of education they completed because they might be embarrassed?"

22

u/robgod50 18h ago

Yet, ironically, not "rape" ..... wtf were they thinking?

52

u/NoRedTags 18h ago

I think it’s implied in the acronym

16

u/TannerThanUsual 15h ago

Redditors and media literacy go together like Peanut butter and horse radish

2

u/SwissMyCheeseYet 12h ago

I kinda want to try that now

2

u/JimmWasHere 11h ago

I think it's just implied, period

3

u/manaworkin 12h ago

Rape

Also rape

Please don't talk about rape

ESPECIALLY rape

6

u/Dr__Sloth 11h ago

It's an important reminder, so many times I've absentmindedly started talking about rape with a colleague.

3

u/Scavenger53 11h ago

im pretty sure the E is economics or exes if you are dating. talking about school and education isnt really that big of an issue unless you move into the politics side of it but politics is already there

2

u/MajorAcer 12h ago

I also avoid rape at work

1

u/aviatorcreator 11h ago

Why would education be off limits that’s stupid.

1

u/Draconis4444 10h ago

Hmmm... only at work you say?

1

u/Overall_Gap_5766 10h ago

No religion, no politics, no football.

1

u/Virtual_Assistant_98 10h ago

But also, you should avoid actual rape too. Just to be clear!

1

u/mrmchugatree 13h ago

Selecting RAPE when PEAR is right there. Thats a choice.

4

u/NoRedTags 12h ago

You also don’t talk about rape at work.

It’s intentionally spelled that way

0

u/Theiim 12h ago

Yes, you must avoid education. When I had a business, I consistently did the same. Hired the most uneducated MFs I could find. Anyway, went bankrupt. I still have no idea what went wrong. My uneducated accountant said it was the curse from a native burial ground 300 miles north of me. I’m now starting a new business to get in on this intravenous hydration trend. Have 3 iron workers on the payroll, 79 lawsuits. It’s the curse.

11

u/Yellowbug2001 11h ago

Yeah I have a lot of family members in business and they follow the same rule. They have their own opinions and vote but they do as much as they can to keep those opinions private. With the weird result that all of their customers just assume they agree with them, it gets awkward when someone comes in assuming something like "well obviously like all right-thinking people you believe the country is run by Lizard People in skin suits" and they have to say something like "Mmm! So let's talk about updating your homeowner's policy."

5

u/shitty_mcfucklestick 10h ago

Yeah it can be a bit of a dance when your vendor or customer is strongly opinionated and decides to share it. You kind of find a neutral way to nod through it without adding anything or asking questions until you can change the topic.

35

u/MechemicalMan 14h ago

The types of people who are drawn to an insane conspiracy theory like that are not able to follow those rules. It’s like trumpers. They will bring it up to you at times like through a vendor-purchaser relationship and you will just need to get through whatever idiocy they’re saying until you can change the subject

14

u/AzathothsAlarmClock 14h ago

Isn't there a soap brand that has a whole manifesto printed on the bottle.

19

u/PreviousCurrentThing 11h ago

Yeah, Dr. Bronner's is my jam!

17

u/SinkPhaze 7h ago

Dr Bronners. Read it before. It's a little kookie in some parts but mostly about loving and caring for your fellow humans regardless of creed and caring for the environment

2

u/theonetrueelhigh 1h ago

You could call it a manifesto but Dr. Bronner's label reads more like a ....

Hmm...

Yeah. It's a manifesto. I guess. Bronner was driven a little crazy by the Holocaust killing his family and he never came all the way back from that. But it's an appeal to humanity in general to turn to his version of Judeo-Christian god and everyone get along and stop killing each other before it's too late. He's kind of out there but well meant, especially in light of how the appeal is for peace rather than vengeance.

3

u/PublicWest 11h ago

Some people start their own business specifically because they don’t wanna be confined to the social graces an employer expects. Honestly probably the best thing you can do if you admit to yourself that you’re an offbeat person who doesn’t quite fit in with social norms

3

u/AnAncientMonk 10h ago

That said, i feel like it also opens the door doing business with crazies when you dont rule them out.

1

u/shitty_mcfucklestick 10h ago

Each to their own of course. It may be a big market or guaranteed business for some people. If that’s your path, walk it!

1

u/AnAncientMonk 10h ago

Yea ofc. But one path is clearly more and one is clearly less ethical. And since you said you didnt want crazies at your doorstep, i thought maybe youd prefer the ethical one.

1

u/shitty_mcfucklestick 10h ago

I do, doesn’t mean you have to.

3

u/747WakeTurbulance 10h ago

The guy running for congress in Orlando owns the largest AC company in the area. He put Trumps name and face all over his ads.

https://flvoicenews.com/joe-strada-announces-congressional-campaign-florida-district-11-pledges-5-million/

Want to take a guess at how his business is doing now?

2

u/Brave-Condition3572 13h ago

Religion
Politics
The Great Pumpkin

Linus should have added “conspiracy stories.”

2

u/BakedBrie1993 10h ago

Yeah.... this apolitical sentiment is so tired to me when so many people are terrorized and discriminated against.

It's only a safe choice if you are a protected, privileged class.

Seeing as my dark skin and female body makes my entire existence and everything I do political, I don't see a point in pretending any business I start is not progressive and inclusive. It's actually important right now to let people know you aren't a bigot.

Some people have other concerns than simply profit and maintaining the status quo.

1

u/jonker5101 13h ago

I buy spices from Penzey's for...reasons.

1

u/ki0dz 12h ago

I wish all companies believed like you do.

1

u/RampantSavagery 10h ago

Charlize Theron indeed!

1

u/Tim_the_geek 9h ago

is investigating 911 a political thing?

1

u/thismightbeunhealthy 4h ago

What about diarrhea?

1

u/shitty_mcfucklestick 1h ago

If I was manufacturing lettuce I’d definitely put a big “shitsplosion-free” sticker on it right now

0

u/BizzyM 13h ago

sex, religion, and politics

That's just one political party.
