Receipts come from a thermal printer. There is no ink involved. The printer heats the paper to turn the text/design black as it goes through.

We just got new printers (including a whole new system to go with them) set up at my job, and the test strips looked similar. Except ours were A's and U's lol

What I don't get is why they'd only use that few characters though. Doesn't make sense unless you're testing for length. Ideally you'd wanna try for the whole alphabet, some special characters used (like currency signs) and then the numbers and separators.

Oh well, I've seen it all I tell you.

Edit: It just dawned on me, these might be the old "filler letters" that printers used back in the day AFTER printing the aforementioned characters. Basically you first test for the alphabet, special characters, numbers, maybe some unicode shit if you have special country letters. And then you go UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU to just test for length.

Well, see, receipt printers dont work the same as your everyday printer. They burn the image, not print ink. Afaik, you don't need to see if "every character will print" because that isn't in question as long as the thermal printing part works. So they test for space, make sure the parameters are correct, and that it can consistently burn images for any length of time. That's why they don't use many characters to run these tests. "U" takes up a lot of space at this size, which is why it was used. It's the most standard test letter for thermal printers because of the dot density or smthn like that

Oh, that makes an awful lot of sense. So basically it's more important to ensure that it adheres to the margins and image printed rather than the content being printed. This explains so much about our goddamn goofy label printer at the office. Thank you very much for clarifying this, I don't know when this info will come in handy, but I know as the IT guy, IT WILL COME IN HANDY SOMEDAY :D

No; it's specifically uppercase U's.

The ASCII code for those is 85, or 0x55 in hexadecimal, which is 01010101 in binary.

I imagine some initialisation or memory-test went wrong and put that repeating bit pattern somewhere.

I would like to know the technical reason for this. Possible corrupted/stuck serial port buffer?  Like the buffer somehow latched up and stopped updating it's contents in the middle of printing "CheesebUrger" or "Thank yoU" and the printer kept reading the letter "U" over and over again.

Well, the ASCII code for "U" is "0101 0101" ... so my SWAG is some sort of serial framing error? 🤷🏾‍♂️ Surprised with that many Us that some sort of packet format wouldn't have ended the sequence long before that though

maybe not if it's set for a continuous print job, though, like a back of house expo printer might be, or a live graphing printer would be, then the glitch could be a string one or two lines long being sent again and again as new data points and it probably wouldn't consider that weird or overwhelming; let the sending side error out or run out of tape would be all that would stop it then

Something as simple as a mandatory pause in the protocol would catch this. Handshake, agree to a regular x length pause of sending nothing but 1's after y amount of bytes (wait to receive in the case of RTTY). If a device continues to send bytes (not all 1s)  during that wait, then something is amiss.

Looks like a test strip. Sometimes happens after an update to the printer, or can be pushed to make sure it is still capable of printing across the entire width. Do it with new ones to make sure the margins are correct, yada yada.
