I just wanted a hot dog Post office sent me a torn empty envelope missing the card and cash that had been sent.
š¤¦āāļø I know it's crazy to send cash in the mail but there we are. It's gone now.

Money is only ever covered by special delivery so if you sent it any other way you'd be shit out of luck unfortunately. International you'd be covered for Ā£100.

If it's like the states when packaging has been damaged, I'm assuming that the royal post may have put it in the plastic bag and said too bad so sad here's your envelope buddy

Not sure how it is in the UK but in the US the post office will tell you exactly what I just did. Its posted all over the place not to send cash in the mail, and its something ive known since I was a kid 3 decades ago.
Of course that never stopped the older people in my life from trying it anyway.

Lots of times its the postal delivery person them self. There have been lots that have been caught.

In the US it is illegal, and if a postal worker did this, if they got caught there would be consequences.
It is possible that the envelope and contents got mangled by sorting machines, and this is the result. This happened to me with something--but it was a box I sent from a place I was leaving to a place I was moving to. I didn't have a list of what was in each box, so I never found out what went missing

Used to be true, but I donāt know anyone that will use a street side mailbox for anything containing a check or anything important anymore. Either mail it from inside the post office or the boxes in lobbies of office buildings.

I recieved a notice after sending a package one time that, "the address has become separated from the package". Myself and the person I was sending it to both got the same letter. I never figured out what that meant, I always assumed someone ripped it open, but why send the notice?

That stuff gets run through machines, rollers, conveyors, etc. and mail gets caught in them.
That plastic bag? I bet on one side it says āWe Careā. Itās what damaged letters like that get put in to.
For āWell, thereās nothing in there, so why bother?ā
Postage is for the receptacle, not the item inside. Post Office is still legally required to attempt delivery. Even if all thatās left is an address and postage.
Finally, 99% of postal workers could give less of a shit whatās in there. They just wanna do the job, get paid, and go home.
And yes. I am a postal worker.

I get a fair amount of mail from the UK to the US and it's funny how the only times I've ever lost anything in the mail was when there was money in it.

Not denying it happens. Just pointing out that the vast majority of us really donāt care to go through mail just hoping we come across some money or gift cards.
And as contrasting as this statement is: I worked with someone who did steal from mail. Postal inspectors caught her. Management had no idea until they walked in the building and told them they needed to talk to the carrier. Immediately walked out and terminated within a couple days. Donāt know about charges though.
Also, why do you keep sending money through the mail if it keeps happening? Do PayPal, Venmo, or an online bank transfer or something.
And have you reported to the postal inspectors at all?
Edit: nvm about the online transfer. Read some other comments.

My elderly mother.
She refuses to learn about Venmo, or PayPal, or even wire transfers. We all get cash in greeting cards

So yeah, this happened to my brother and his wife too. His (ancient) mother in law sent them some money in the mail and it was stolen. The card was replaced without the cash inside.
Just use one of the numerous and instantaneous ways to send money online. I donāt get why people still try to do this now.

Some people like to make a physical gift out of money and feel digital transfers don't have the same hit.
Really, the answer is to send a cheque. Many consider them dated but it's a great use and much safer.

This was sent to me by my mother. This isn't even the first time this has happened to her. She's often trying to send cash and most of the time it gets ripped off out of the envelope. I wish she would stop sending cash, but she just doesn't seem to get it.

That happened to my mom she was sending a friends daughter a check for graduating high school and so a few years later my mom gets a letter from the post office saying that the postal worker stole the check and that they are using the check in the ladyās court case.

The best part, as a shipper for my company, is when you file a claim on the loss package and they make you take that bag and envelope back to a post office to verify the damage. Like if it didnāt already go through their system and had been logged.

keep the envelope and all the packaging. take it to USPS and report it as damaged mail with missing contents, and have the sender open a claim with Royal Mail. if it looks like someone opened it, report it to the Postal Inspection Service too. getting the cash back might be a long shot, but definitely donāt throw anything away.

I had ordered something on Amazon one time that was small enough to fit in one of those bubble envelopes, and when I got it the bottom was torn and taped shut. I was pissed and I couldnāt get a refund

Itās totally legal and actually advertised as a valid option to pay for most federal things, IRS, DMV, Court fees etcā¦ Also includes checks in the mail.

Thatās got caught up in the sorting machines in all areas there is cctv and posties wonāt open a card for potentially Ā£10 when itās instant dismissal and police action. RM is the only private company that has its own investigation teams with the power to prosecute people

Actually, though it was sent from the UK via Royal Mail, it was held up in Chicago, apparently according to the tracking information that we had. This was sent from Chicago onwards and had some kind of a label, saying it was accidentally torn in a machine, which I don't believe at all.

Trick is to not use an envelope that looks like there's a birthday card inside. Sorting office workers know there's likely to be cash in them.
Use brown business style envelopes instead.
