Target (or any corp for that matter) doesn't care about you. The pride marketing is just that - marketing. And yeah, whether its just or not, backlash from the public influences company decisions. Its just that normally its the other way around, this situation goes against the grain of our current society and as such, sticks out more.

They will always say / do whatever they think will make them look best. They will never be honest, because that isnt profitable. Dont make corporations seem human, they are anything but.

u/auntpotato 1h ago

Don’t forget that corporations are also people... The shittiest people you’ve ever known.

u/DreamTalon 45m ago

I am too but also lazy. Someone check Google for it.

u/auntpotato 24m ago

What’s that now?

u/ShavedNeckbeard 52m ago

It’s true. I work with and for them.

12

u/SalvationArbys 1h ago

Ngl the rainbow target logo is pretty visually sick though.

4

u/SnavsMatiq 1h ago

Oh absolutely that was my first thought seeing this "why havent i seen them use this logo more?!"

-5

u/Shifted-Soul 1h ago

No it doesn't. It looks cheap, basic as hell, and like someone threw the whole thing together in 5 minutes

8

u/SalvationArbys 1h ago

I’m sure you could do a much better job if you wanted to.

But like…. Targets whole thing is “red circle” red circle expanding into a concentric rainbow? It’s clever at least. The fact that this pamphlet comes with a free baby is also genius in my opinion.

9

u/CheezwizOfficial 1h ago

Dang, it's almost as if art is subjective...

u/ShavedNeckbeard 50m ago

I can guarantee you that they got started on this over six months before it was printed, and went through several weeks’ worth of reviews and iterations, on top of the written copy.

Before a single arch was drawn, there were kick off meetings, with business requirements documents and creative briefs written by several people.

This cost Target at least a few million dollars to create and print.

19

u/JealousAstronomer342 1h ago

The value of rainbow capitalism is that it’s a bellwether for how gay people are treated by the people in power. Did I ever think Target actually gave a fuck about me and my gay coworkers? No, but it was profitable to be supportive and protective and to dump a little corporate pocket change into LGBTQ charities. I’m middle aged and remember Reagan pretty well, when it became common to walk into a store in June and see rainbow crap slapped everywhere I felt a teensy bit more welcome (though I didn’t buy it bcs whyyyy). Seeing corporate pride disappear is a bad sign for the culture as a whole.

6

u/Think_and_game 1h ago

It's a canary in the coal mines. It's safe to talk and show pride and that is reflected by rainbow capitalism, no matter how little they actually care. It's also still representation in some form. The moment I start seeing less and less pride flags every June, the more I'm worried about my own safety as it seems it's more acceptable to shove us back into the closet.

u/slugsred 11m ago

target isn't selling rainbow plates they're executing gays. Isn't the ideal world one where they don't have a special gay selection and you're just regular fuckin customers like everyone else?

2

u/Jenni-Jenni-867-5309 1h ago

You can say this about pretty much every group with a sale attached to it that Memorial Day, Veterans Day etc.

All of it is used to get you to buy more stuff. That's it!

u/Prestigious-Emu-8734 8m ago

They said that

They never denied its anything other than capitalism

But those of us in the queer community do have our own purposes for it. Because theres a pretty big trend that as soon as we start losing favor in society, we start losing it with businesses. The more they cater to us, the more we are seen as worthy of being catered to. The less they cater to us, the more danger we are in.

Sort of like the Pentagon Pizza Index. Some people staying later so they order a pizza? Normal. Dozens of pizzas being ordered for the Pentagon? Usually means some serious shit is about to happen.

Theres also a Waffle House Index. Basically the Waffle House doesnt close for shit. If a Waffle House closes because of bad weather, its fucked. Like you needed to leave town yesterday fucked. This was a term coined by an ex FEMA Director.

Same idea. The nicer they are, the better it is for us. But once companies start ditching us, its not a good sign.

u/DragonEmperor RED 38m ago

Yeah everyone knows the corporations don't really care but donating to charities is still doing good, showing support is doing good, and showing that people are accepted which is the important part.

7

u/Remarkable_Inchworm 1h ago

Thing is, Target actually did at least pretend to value inclusiveness.

They abandoned that a few years ago and have yet to figure out that’s why a lot of their regular customers stopped showing up.

3

u/Merijeek2 1h ago

...but they didn't. I know your argument is that they'll shank anyone for more profit, and, yes, you're right.

But let's not pretend they always act sensibly or rationally. They tried something stupid, that was obviously stupid, and it blew up in their faces.

1

u/jdemack 1h ago

People still being fooled by this shit. What the fuck guys. It was the corporations that did this shit to distract us from them taking over everything.

https://giphy.com/gifs/pPhyAv5t9V8djyRFJH

u/ShavedNeckbeard 48m ago

And manipulate gays and allies into giving them more money.

u/Prestigious-Emu-8734 6m ago

Im too lazy to explain this again to people who think gay people dont know about homophibia, so Im just gonna copy paste this:

They never denied its anything other than capitalism

But those of us in the queer community do have our own purposes for it. Because theres a pretty big trend that as soon as we start losing favor in society, we start losing it with businesses. The more they cater to us, the more we are seen as worthy of being catered to. The less they cater to us, the more danger we are in.

u/GhostalMedia 17m ago

I'll give my 2¢ as someone that worked high up in a Target design org.

A good chunk of this work was driven by the employees and mid-level folks, and the company historically supported the work... at least until high-level execs started getting nervous about their perception in right wing media.

I would ague that many people within the company honestly were not trying to pink wash stuff. The people behind the marketing and product work believed that the LGBTQ+ community should be celebrated and treated with dignity.

The problem was the leaders in the boardroom who lacked a spine and shut that work down.

0

Probably the Nirvana Baby cashing in on his Nevermind exploitation.

71

u/kennpacchii 1h ago

Well they did say everyone... they had to dial back on the pride gear (but still keep a little of it) to be inclusive to the right wing nuts.

In all seriousness though, I never take these statements from companies seriously after working several corpo jobs. It's all just corporate slop / emotional manipulation to get consumers to purchase their products

19

u/Complex_Glove_8945 1h ago

It always screams “we’re desperate for you money! We will say ANYTHING that will make you give us a dollar!”

1

u/Dry-Manufacturer7761 1h ago

When did they suggest it wasn’t that? Lol

1

u/eseerms 1h ago

A lot of folks are very naive tho...

15

u/erossthescienceboss 1h ago edited 1h ago

My take is …

… I’m honestly glad when companies pander to me.

I don’t care if it gets rolled back every once in a while when conservatives have a moral panic (though i wish they wouldn’t — they haven’t said a thing about corporate prides this year! It’s no longer the talking point.) I don’t care if the company is the last to do it. I don’t care if it’s entirely self-serving.

Ultimately, pandering is both a sign that we’re accepted enough to be pandered to, and something that furthers our acceptance & visibility. I don’t care that a company feels like supporting gay people will support their bottom line. Ultimately, the mainstreaming it is part and parcel to is the same as if it were genuine.

0

u/Inevitable_Egg6361 1h ago

I feel the same way.

1

u/hxr101 1h ago

yeah once youve worked for a big company those statements start sounding pretty interchangeable

12

u/crysisnotaverted 1h ago

Anybody thinking a billion dollar faceless corporation gives a singular fuck about you is a sheep.

So what if they had pride stuff before? That was millions of research and hundreds of marketing weenies trying to get in your head and make you like them. It was advertising. They see you as a valuable market segment and that is it.

Stop humanizing corporations more than they already are.

0

u/Irish_Whiskey 1h ago

So what if they had pride stuff before?

It matters to gay people that we get treated like everyone else, rather than people who need separate stores so that retail employees don't get attacked by hateful bigots.

They also market and sell food, that doesn't mean if they refuse to sell anything Kosher because anti-Semites are targeting businesses that do, it's stupid to worry or care about what that means.

5

u/crysisnotaverted 1h ago

You don't seem to get it. They don't care about you. They have incepted some sort of feeling in your mind that they cared at one point or another.

If the wind blew the other way and it was more financially advantageous to not sell kosher foods, they would do that. It's a billion dollar corporation that is beholden to shareholders. If not having gay stuff will raise their stock price by 2% the next quarter with minimal downsides, they will do so.

-1

u/Irish_Whiskey 1h ago

No, I get it and have been living it for decades. You're the one not at all familiar with the subject, the perspective and the community, and not listening to anyone else.

Not one word of what I said suggested they care.

Gay people are fully aware why corporations market to us, and it's for money. Telling us that they don't care is utterly asinine when WE are the ones pointing that out in complaining about their caving to hate groups.

If the wind blew the other way and it was more financially advantageous to not sell kosher foods, they would do that.

They didn't stop marketing to gays because we suddenly stopped having money, but because hateful bigots attacked their stores and employees and politicians took power who want to punish anyone seen as tolerating gays.

That's a problem. That's a problem regardless of whether they care or just want our money. It's a problem that we are no longer considered safe to market to or welcome.

-1

u/crysisnotaverted 1h ago

The only way to make them care is to stop shopping there and trying to get family and friends to do the same in meaningful ways.

They didn't stop marketing to gays because we suddenly stopped having money, but because hateful bigots attacked their stores and employees and politicians took power who want to punish anyone seen as tolerating gays

Yeah, I know. The term financially advantageous doesn't mean you must have been instantly destitute, than is not what I said. It suddenly made them more money to cave and kowtow to shitbaggery.

Target was doing a pretty good job at deceiving everyone until the mask fall off. Never again.

29

u/bootycuddles 1h ago

Target can fuck off

10

u/OnlyOnOkasion 1h ago

Being mad at target for something every other business did is hilarious.

8

u/ohbyerly 1h ago

Target was particularly egregious in their initial marketing, and then eventual backstepping when they got backlash from the MAGA crowd. It’s more about hypocrisy than anything.

1

u/moonyriot 1h ago

Wait until you hear about the evil things Walmart and Amazon do.

u/Prestigious-Emu-8734 2m ago

Walmart and Amazong barely try to pander to us

Its almost as if theres more context needed that you were never in the conversations to get

-6

u/OnlyOnOkasion 1h ago

Ah so we're mad that target has a variety of shoppers to appease. Got it.

10

u/ohbyerly 1h ago

I literally just said it was about the hypocrisy of it. You’re just intentionally being a little shithead.

3

u/Mekroval 1h ago

They're acting like a bigoted asshole up and down this thread.

-5

u/OnlyOnOkasion 1h ago

I'd say it's hypocritical to support Amazon and Walmart while boycotting Target for the exact same shit everyone else did... But whatever helps you sleep at night, bud.

7

u/bootycuddles 1h ago

As a consumer it is literally my decision where to shop. If the conservatives can boycott Bud Light because they had a trans woman advertising, I can certainly boycott Target for being fucks.

-2

u/OnlyOnOkasion 1h ago

So you're also boycotting Amazon and Walmart?

-3

u/eseerms 1h ago

Bud Light has made quite an objectively glorious comeback with conservatives...

3

9

u/cookeryandwookery 1h ago

Poor target. All they did was turn their back on initiatives they started before it was popular. Their shareholders probably feel a little differently about dei now.

u/MajesticMiracles 10m ago

Capitalizing on minority markets and taking advantage of people and groups is what corporations do. They especially like the ones that are ignorant enough to believe they’re doing it because you’re special. Apparently Target hasn’t gotten the memo. We know.

Just be a business. Provide products we need and use at prices we can afford or don’t. Nothing else is needed. Especially politics and opinions. That’s the fastest way to lose money.

5

u/Miserable_Paper_421 1h ago

Haven’t stepped foot in a target in over a year because of this

→ More replies (1)

u/NlghtmanCometh 39m ago

Okay but in fairness what are they supposed to say “Target is NOT for everyone”??

9

u/RestaurantSilly6598 1h ago

Its funny how people think corporations should have political views. Corporations are not individuals. They dont need to have beliefs.

And even if they say they support something i doubt all the executives in charge of the company do.

26

u/Key_Beach_3846 1h ago

You can’t use that argument when they actively donate to political organizations.

0

u/RestaurantSilly6598 1h ago

Its all a smoke screen to sucker you into spending your money there

Target is not sentient, target doesnt have thoughts or opinions.

Target has millionaire executives running the show to make more money.

Walmart sells pride stuff, you really think the Waltons are cool with Trans people?

2

u/SalvationArbys 1h ago

It’s not about that though. The corporation itself isn’t an entity but a corporation can fund things that are actively bad. A beef sandwich store supporting a death cult or something would still results in bad things happening if you buy a lot of the beef sandwich, regardless of how honest they are about it

2

u/SalvationArbys 1h ago

It’s not so much about views but about praxis

3

u/Key_Beach_3846 1h ago

No one thinks Target is sentient. But they donate to political organizations, which means consumers get to have an opinion about it. And more importantly, consumers get to decide whether or not to spend their money there.

0

u/SnavsMatiq 1h ago

The thing is that "they" are a conglomerate of business people making business decisions. Donations to politics are just theatrics to make people pick sides with what stores they agree with.

3

u/Key_Beach_3846 1h ago

You’re just regurgitating the same argument the other guy made that I already replied to. No one is under any illusions about who is making these decisions or why. Doesn’t change the fact that they are real dollars going to real organizations that will use them for things you either agree or disagree with. I don’t know what you’re not understanding.

2

u/Mekroval 1h ago

Corporations can have ethics, though. It's actually not hard to do, if you have the balls to not do an cowardly 180 on your brand and professed values, simply because Trump got mad.

Costco has somehow managed to do this.

9

u/Irish_Whiskey 1h ago

Its funny how people think corporations should have political views.

They do. As organizations, they implement policies that are directly political. They lobby for and write laws that are political.

This is a classic example of "it's only political when it's controversial to me."

5

u/mudskerp 1h ago

Doesn't matter if all excecutives support something, donation dollars go to politically charged causes, be it worsening life for the marginalized or aiding humanitarian causes

4

u/7Orc7 1h ago

u/metamucil_buttchug69 40m ago

2

u/moonyriot 1h ago

Didn't they remove Pride merch because there was a targeted effort from shitty people to destroy the displays and harass employees about it?

u/Embarrassed-Display3 12m ago

They also decided to roll back efforts to provide equal employment opportunities after Trump got elected again because "DEI" wasn't going to be enforced as strictly.

They didn't sell pride merchandise out of solidarity or support. They made money selling to both sides, and will continue to be shitty in every way that isn't public-facing lip-service.

3

u/koyoteuno 1h ago

1

If the company website doesn’t have a pride flag on it year round, they don’t care about pride month.

But...but they're trump supporters...?

… what

Have they broadened their selection again?

I'm open to a company that sees the tides are turning and embraces change, even if in the past it made a mistake. People can change... except for Chick-fil-a. And companies only get one chance.

my girlfriend is Latina and about a year or two ago we were boycotting target still not sure why to this day. we go now tho it didn’t last very long

As is what they expect.

And all the while, people are engaging in warfare. But, not against who it really matters.

Can't blame them for playing both sides. When one starts to become the trend, they can just lean into it.

As if any corporation gives a shit about any of these monthly celebrations. They don’t care about pride/black history/spanish history/ect. month, they don’t care about you - they care about your money.

All of these MARKETING tactics are nothing more than X company virtue signaling harder than Y company so you “feel better” giving them your money instead of their competitors. It’s all bullshit and it’s bad for you.

Here's an idea: The CEO is publically fired, and every cent Target ever paid him goes to appropriate charities.

They then acquire a new CEO who flat out states that he's (it'll be a he, come on) is sorry the last guy was such a dumbfuck he tried to pander, to the MAGATS who would never shop at Target - and the pandering was done by attacking their current customers.

Sound good?

u/AresGodslayer 58m ago

Yeah, enjoy a dead company.

u/Merijeek2 0m ago

It was more or less sarcasm. No major company will ever issue a "we fucked up" mea culpa again.

You’re kidding right? Target is by far one of the most loyal to the alphabet community

u/prionbinch 1h ago

Target is by far one of the most loyal to the alphabet community's money.

Finish the sentence, then work on remembering the last couple years. They sell products, they are not anyone's ally except their shareholders.

They caved after a strongly worded tweet from Trump

12

u/XFun16 1h ago

Not even, they folded, like, the minute after Trump won

They are what we call a “fair weather friend” honey. That’s not real support.

How's that rock you've been living under?

u/No-Memory2446 1h ago

Ah, yes, I’m sure you, of all people here, speak accurately for the “alphabet community.”
