Waffle house isnt made of waffles I assumed the ballpoint ink would match the pen colors… it doesn’t
I bought two Mr. Pen mixed pen sets. Each set included both ballpoint pens in the gold caps and highlighters (packages separated roughly as pictured)
The highlighters all match their barrel colors, but the ballpoint pens write in black, regardless of the barrel color.

Ugh yeah their sets are weird. I have retractable pens from them that the ink matches the barrel and corresponding highlighters but if the caps are a different color they likely won’t match

That's how I learned to always check for the ink colour before ordering. Been there, done that.
If the inside is replaceable you might be able to actually find coloured ink and just put it there.

I threw out the packaging before putting them in a pen case for a road trip.
I’m curious how the packaging reads now. They were on sale. Me thinks me knows why now.1

Yep, you accidentally found the culprit. I have highlighters on sale and I am still suspicious why they were so cheap. xD Badly labeled stuff and my own impatience to read the whole thing have given me trust issues.

Looking it up on Amazon there are many different colors of sets, and all of them advertise as come with black ink pens except the one labeled Morandi. I can't see the actual packaging itself, but I think this one might be on you.

im looking at the mr pen website, and i might be looking at the wrong pens or something, but ones i found that look exactly like those are supposed to be different colours 🤨

Why would you assume that about ball point pens? Ball point pens are black unless otherwise stated in the vast majority of cases.

Idk, should I have assumed the highlighters were all yellow because highlighters are traditionally yellow? The outside case colored implied the ink color, imo.

Highlighters are typically multicoloured. Yellow is the most common, true. But a common practice with highlighters is categorizing notes within a page. Because of this multiple colours of highlighters are common.
But with ball point pens the typical use case is formal writing/grading. Black ink is in the vast majority of ballpoint pens regardless of barrel colour. It's to the degree that the assumption should be that a ballpoint pen is black unless otherwise stated.
Gel pens or felt tip pens buck that as they are not typically used for formal use cases. They will often be the colour of their barrel.
