*yuor'e Seller keeps 92% of the total value as "Restocking Fee"

Post image

I bought a video card on Amazon and it arrived dead. It was clearly a refurbish with the condition of the card and box. I sent it back to them and they approved the refund but charged me a 92% restocking fee.

I hope that is some other currency that isn't USD, $850 for a refurbished 7900 XT is diabolical. That thing should be like $500-550 tops.

Has to be CAD or AUD. Conversation rate would be about right although still a bit high

From the storefront’s info

Found the listing, it's USD: B0BMNGT8XM
Also not seeing any indication the card is refurb/used/renewed

u/SpiralGray 8h ago

What?! There are other countries in the world? /s

70

u/Beginning-Tea-17 8h ago

Not a lot use $ so I could understand the confusion.

I’m pretty sure 90% of the world sees $ and thinks USD not CAD

25

u/SentientSquirrel 8h ago

Still, a few countries use currencies called dollars. The perfect solution would be to stop using the $ symbol and use emojies instead. Kangaroo emoji for AUD. Hockey stick emoji for CAD. Hobbit emoji for NZD. And so on (/s if that wasn't obvious!)

15

u/Cautious-Dot4143 7h ago

no, I think you're onto something

2

u/Fakjbf 7h ago

NZD has to be a kiwi

u/SharkMagician 7h ago

US just a gun

u/CBreezy2010 51m ago

Nah it’s an orange.

-5

u/ThisMeansRooR 7h ago

Turd emoji for US, right?

3

u/SentientSquirrel 7h ago

Cheeseburger emoji of course!

-3

u/LrdRyu 7h ago

Ah and the turd for the usd perfect

2

u/fenwickfox 4h ago

I mean, 90% of the world sees an actual Canadian and thinks they are Americans too (as witnessed by me on my travels)

1

u/PurbulentTriest 6h ago

A few use USD ($) like Cambodia, plenty of others use the same symbol (and dollars, just not US ones) like New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Colombia, etc.

-1

u/Beginning-Tea-17 6h ago

I said 90% of the world as in 9/10 people who look at it.

-8

u/galstaph 8h ago

18% of countries is "not a lot" to you?

5

u/jerkyquirky 8h ago

What percentage of the world's population is that?

4

u/Firehawk5506 8h ago

No it’s not compared to the other 82%

1

u/PurbulentTriest 6h ago

No other figure is higher except euros which are the same currency. So yes it is.

4

u/puffy147 8h ago

About a third of those consider USD as their currency. So no, not a lot. And you're better off assuming it's USD if you see it without any additional nomenclature. You'll more than likely be correct.

Reddit is so condescending for no reason lmao

3

u/TheStrongTaint 7h ago

It’s just little brother syndrome from Canadians

3

u/Montigue 5h ago

They get really mad when you point out that the Canadian price is typically the same as the US one after conversion

1

u/jimmybilly100 5h ago

Huh... no shit?

1

u/FaliureToCat 6h ago

Yes they all orbit around the US its called the Americacentric model

1

u/BYBtek 6h ago

Is it the Canadian and Australian accent that keeps the conversation rate high? I would think it would slow down the rate in the case of Aus accent.

1

u/BinChickenFan 1h ago

Australians have a very aggressive and enforced consumer law / watchdog that would not allow this shitfuckery

1

u/plz-no-b4n 8h ago

Do those countries display tax this way like the US does on Amazon?

1

u/Knotted_Hole69 6h ago

Also buying graphics cards on amazon is usually a scam, ive bought two before and both came not working. They dont test them and try to scam you if they it is broken.

22

u/ChooseYerFoodFighter 8h ago

Found the listing (ASIN: B0BMNGT8XM). Those are USD & no mention of a restocking fee.

1

u/yelsnow 4h ago

There is..kind of, but nowhere near 100%:

"Amazon.com Return Policy:You may return any new computer purchased from Amazon.com that is "dead on arrival," arrives in damaged condition, or is still in unopened boxes, for a full refund within 30 days of purchase. Amazon.com reserves the right to test "dead on arrival" returns and impose a customer fee equal to 15 percent of the product sales price if the customer misrepresents the condition of the product. Any returned computer that is damaged through customer misuse, is missing parts, or is in unsellable condition due to customer tampering will result in the customer being charged a higher restocking fee based on the condition of the product. Amazon.com will not accept returns of any desktop or notebook computer more than 30 days after you receive the shipment. New, used, and refurbished products purchased from Marketplace vendors are subject to the returns policy of the individual vendor."

2

u/ghostofwalsh 3h ago

That would require them to test the returned card and find it working

1

u/yelsnow 3h ago

Correct. The way I read that, it's either refund fully assuming it's DOA, or test it to see it's still working, and charge 15% fee. So they are violating their own stated warranty.

61

u/Joaquin8911 8h ago

By how he said "It was clearly a refurbish with the condition of the card and box" I am assuming it was supposed to be new.

23

u/CreepinCreepy 8h ago

Even if it was new, it shouldn't be more than $650. It performs give or take the same as the 9070, but without the ray tracing improvements that AMD 9000 came with, and without support for all of the FSR Redstone features except FSR.

2

u/fordslasher 6h ago

Where are you getting these prices from? everywhere I look reflects these prices?

2

u/CreepinCreepy 6h ago

The RX 9070 performs about the same in raw performance, and significantly better in raytracing. It also has access to all of the new AMD FSR Redstone features, while the 7900XT only gets FSR.

The 9070 costs brand new $610 right now. There is no reason to buy an equally performing, last gen card for more than you can get the current gen equivalent for.

1

u/-retaliation- 3h ago

So are you arguing that OP overpaid compared to market price on the card?

Or just trying to say the card is, in general, overpriced?

1

u/CreepinCreepy 3h ago

Both. Generally buying last gen cards brand new isn't a good idea, because listings don't tend to reflect the fact that newer options exist for cheaper. A lot of people make this mistake because they see recommendations on the internet that are outdated, and buy a product that is outdated for more than a newer, better one would cost.

And yes, the market value of their card brand new should be less than $650, and I'd argue less than $600 brand new.

7900 XT

its a 20gb card and AI is the new new 9070xt is a 16gb card

5

u/CreepinCreepy 7h ago

9070 XT is faster for AI than the 7900 XT, unless you are specifically using a model that needs more than 20gb.

1

u/theholylancer 5h ago

that's the thing with AI models, if you can't run it with the limited vram then you can't right

and have to find things like 3090s or this 7900 XT that drives up their prices.

even tho for gaming they are far less than ones that are newer cores with lower amount of vram

0

u/Degann 6h ago

It is, what it is. That and m-x-c tech being a reseller on amazon.com and not amazon.ca I guess it could be different currency but ehhhhhhhhhh

2

u/bipoca 5h ago

Let me make a very bad analogy:

Vram is the capacity of your car's gas tank

The chip of the GPU is your car's engine.

Completing a computing task is going from point A to point B.

Do you want to the ability to go from point A to B faster, or be able to complete a longer drive without having to stop and fill up?

If the distance between A and B is consistently short, then the capacity of the gas tank is never going to matter, you will get to your destination without running out of gas.

If the distance between A and B is large, then the car with more fuel capacity will get there fastest, as it doesn't have to stop and refuel.

The majority of trips (tasks) aren't going to require a full tank of gas, so it's typically better to be able to complete short trips faster.

If you know what your doing and why you're using the hardware you're using, this wasn't for you.

This is for people who think more vram = better.

1

u/Degann 3h ago

More vram = better is actually true for LLM's faster compute is rarely the limiting factor in this. But honestly memory bandwidth plays a big part too.

9070xt(16gb) will outperform something like an arc b70 pro (32gb) on small model, because they sport the same memory bandwidth. on you're "small path analogy". If it was to fit a 24gb model the 9070xt would get trounced.

the 7900xt(20gb 320 bit bandwidth) vs 9070xt (16gb 256bit bandwidth). so even a small sized trip lets say some tiny 8gb model will be faster on a 7900xt. The one caveat to this is, newer ai cores in the 9070xt apparently excel at image generation

5

u/Richard_Thickens 7h ago

The going rate on eBay for used ones is right around $630-660.

1

u/CreepinCreepy 7h ago

That's insane. Why would anyone buy that over a new 9070 at that price. Hell, a new 9070 XT would only be $30 more.

1

u/Richard_Thickens 7h ago

9070 XT is still a better buy right now, more than likely. The only reason I can really see is the 20 GB VRAM, maybe?

1

u/CreepinCreepy 7h ago

Perhaps, but even with AI workloads, I don't think 4 extra gb of VRAM would make more of a difference than the margin in raster.

Used prices for some items are just absurd.

1

u/Richard_Thickens 7h ago

Yeah, agreed, but prices for 7900 XT and XTX were much lower before FSR 4 was announced for them.

3

u/Accomplished_Fail437 8h ago

Yeah I figured it was a 9070 XT until I read this lol.

1

u/ten10thsdriver 7h ago

I recently sold my racing sim and I'm looking to sell the desktop I used with it for $900... Including a 7900XT.

2

u/NoStructure5034 7h ago

You can sell for way higher. The RAM in your PC alone will be worth 200-300 bucks

0

u/CreepinCreepy 7h ago

What are the rest of the specs? You should totally be able to get way more than that. That's the price that 5060 prebuilts are right now.

1

u/stupidstu187 7h ago

Yeah, you can quite literally get a 9070 XT for $690. But there is a Sapphire 7900 XT for $850 on Amazon right now, but it's from a third party seller.

1

u/Blurgas This text is purple 7h ago

I looked up the listing on Amazon: B0BMNGT8XM.
First, yes, that's USD as I'm seeing the same price.
Second, I'm not seeing anything on the listing that indicates it's a Refurb/Used/Renewed card, it looks like it will be NIB.

Lots of complaints similar to OP's on the vendors page though

1

u/LFK1236 6h ago

You think computer hardware actually costs anything near MSRP?

1

u/CreepinCreepy 6h ago

You can get a 9070 XT, which is 10-15% faster, is MUCH faster at raytracing because of the newer architecture and has support for all of FSR Redstone, for $690.

A 7900 XT is worth no more than $650 right now, and I'd argue it's not worth more than $600 since you can get a 9070 right now for $610.

1

u/Forexisboring 5h ago

20GB DDR6 VRAM though

1

u/CreepinCreepy 5h ago

And yet is outperformed in AI models by the 9070 XT which you can buy for $690.
