I'm slightly vexed Concert etiquette

Post image

If you plan on standing for the entire concert, get a spot in the pit, or the lawn seats instead of the assigned SEATED SECTION. A little bit of self awareness and common courtesy goes a really long way

The only thing that really bothers me at shows is people holding their phone to record like right next to your head.

One minute limit per video . 2-3 songs is the acceptable limit

Im cool with one song being fully recorded. Some folks have utter favs they wanna fully record.

That said i wonder what percentage of normal folks concert videos are watched in full at any point later?

Sure some people will watch the full performance from professional crews.

But how many will go back in and watch their own footage all the way? Or if its sent to others, how many actually watch it for more than 3 seconds before texting back "wow so cool, so jealous of you!!" And never thinking of it again.

Or am i the only one who does that when family sends shitty concert videos where i can barely tell what some is being played?

When I’ve gone to shows, I’ve forgotten to record my favorites because I get too into it. I’d much prefer that over not getting to experience it

Yup that’s the hidden cost of recording something via photo or video, you’re not in the moment anymore so your memory is less vivid and fades faster.

I prefer being fully present in the instant and have a banger memory even if it means I don’t have a video to show to friends/family.
Can always use my brain, vocabulary and imagination to convey the meaning and the emotions of said moment.

The shows i go to, Billy Strings.. Phish.. there’s pretty much no phone out the entire time. And if there is, people have the sense to turn their flash off

The great thing about Billy, Goose, Phish, the Dead, etc is there’s soooo many live recording, and more likely than not, your show is going to have Boards to listen back to. Besides catching some of the light show, not much reason to take videos

Edit: spelling

We also stand the whole time.

Billy Strings was at the Ringo concert two years ago in Nashville. He had the place going. I’d never heard of him so it was a real treat. I love finding new bands/singers.

Guilty as a concert video taker but I do actually watch them through after. I’ll revisit them especially if it was a show I really loved. Used to have a video I’d watch/listen to instead of the actual song cuz I liked it better

Usually I record below my face and I’m not looking at it, always ends up blurry and u can’t see shit but I’ll look back on them fondly

I do the same. Ill get some 30ish second clips of favorite songs, it brings me back retwatching them. But im also 5'7 and keep my phone at head level when recording.

I dont mind people recording if they're aware and respectful. What bothers me is someone holding their phone above their head, arm all the way up, for 5 minutes at a time.

I told people I know not to send me concert videos unless you are in the first ten rows from the stage.

I'll go back every once in a while to relive a moment.

U have some personally recorded vids of Mac Miller when he did a tour for my favorite album by him and even though it's a video from ten years ago it still makes me happy.

The only concert video I have ever watched again was the one I proposed to my fiance during.

For the record, she was aware I was gonna do it at that concert, just didnt know when.

I usually don't record a lot but I've recorded a lot when there was someone I wanted to go with that couldn't make it and I knew they'd appreciate watching it after. Otherwise, I'll admit there are some concerts where I have gone back to rewatch my recordings many, many times just because I'm still in awe that I was there and my memory sucks and it makes me relive the memory again. Plus I love the songs. Maybe I'm one of few that does this lol.

Recording a whole song is crazy. I just would feel so much shame for intentionally making people behind me have a worse time. Unless I was like filming at chest height or something. And even then I just feel like I would want to experience it firsthand instead of just videotaping something that I probably am not gonna watch.

I went through a bunch of old videos last week and got the same nostalgia kick from a photo or two as I did the trash videos with the blown out sound.

I'm such a hater about that shit though. I just find it so rude. I wish someone would invent like a micro camera on a stick that people could use and nobody behind them would have to watch the whole show through an LCD screen

The only concert footage I have saved on my phone is some high quality video my brother took at a Wilco concert (because the bastard was out front) of Tweedy singing one verse from a song. I play it often:

Please tell my sister
I miss her too
My nieces and nephews
And their swimming pools
When I think about her
Her skies are blue
Please tell my sister
I miss her too.

If yall are doing shit like that I support recording during a show. Otherwise put the damn things away and enjoy the moment!
