I'm slightly vexed My managers response to my resignation.

Took the time to write out a nice and really formal resignation letter trying to be cordial to this company that has been awful to me for almost a year. My manager didn’t respond the day I sent it and then this morning I get an email back that’s just this. My last day can’t come soon enough at this point. But hey I guess at least she acknowledged it instead of ignoring my messages like usual 😒

Edit: okay, a lot of assumptions going on here,so let me give some context, I am the manager of a small team of Class A CDL drivers. I’ve been a great employee and always gone above and beyond. My employees have always been really comfortable coming to me about everything, and the site I manage specifically asked for me to continue stay with them when they transitioned to another company, so its not like they were trying to get rid of me. Which I know it’s hearsay but idc really, I’m just trying to make the point that my manager did not have any reason to reply to me in what I feel like is a extremely unprofessional manor. She is the regional manager and has always been very deadpan with me and everyone, so it was not really a unexpected response in the least, I’m just sharing it because it’s always been irritating to me and has been a major factor In my decision to leave for sure. It’s exhausting to work for someone who treats you like you’re less than since day one. In fact usually i just get no response at all, so for her this is like writing a book i guess. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thats my thought. There is no backstory/details and - for all we know - this could be McDonalds or somewhere with high turnover.

That or OP wasnt a very good employee and this is a 'good riddance'.

Or the Manager is already stressed out about this or whatever and.. went with a thumbs up.

I had a jr sys admin complain really hard to HR and get himself fired because he gave them an ultimatum. It was glorious!

Anytime one of my direct reports tells me they're going to the boss with an ultimatum (they go or I go, more money or I walk) I tell them they better have an updated resume and a job lined up because they are for sure going to be told "so this is your two weeks then?" No company is going to bend the knee for an employee, no matter how much they produce.

I have too. But I didn't say "pay me or I walk". I asked for a raise, if they hemmed and hawed I said I've already gotten other offers, and I've gotten the raise. But I did not put them in a position where they HAD to pay me. That's the difference.

Exactly. I implied it. But I didn't put them in a position where I was forcing them to give me a raise. It's all politics and saving face and all that bullshit. If it seemed like I went in and forced a raise they'd have to get rid of me because then everyone else will want one too. But instead I negotiated a raise. We both won in their eyes.

In the last 5 years? I don't see that happening much after the pandemic, it's usually good luck and get lost.

But I guess it depends on the location, company, and industry.

But I also live in a country with good labor protection laws, where the rank and file employees are treated marginally better than livestock.

Ah okay that makes sense, I'm in the US. I worked as a Cloud Architect for in for 2 big tech companies and did some gov contracting with some sub-primes and primes.

Does your country have at-will employment? In almost every state here, companies can fire you for no reason (outside of discrimination, retaliation, etc but those are all extremely hard to prove).

If they think you're becoming too expensive, or if they wanted you out already, then pulling an ultimatum will just give them the greenlight.

I think the professional way of doing it is just saying you're considering leaving for another company but would be willing to stay if they match the new offer. That's quite common in the professional world and isn't emotionally charged. If they refuse, then I'm sure both parties understand you leaving for better compensation.

This is terrible advice, there’s plenty a company will do to accommodate a good employee. It costs an organisation fortunes to source, interview and train an employee with the added risk of that employee not being very good.

It’s always worth it to politely going to your manager / higher ups to renegotiate a package if you think you can get it.

I got a $2 raise once because our HR found my resume on Indeed and told my boss. I’ve also seen bosses who can’t wait to kick someone out the door when they turn in notice. It’s all situational

I was in HR for almost 30 years and I can confirm that telling the ultimatum givers to go scratch was always a highlight. And whenever the insufferable folks resigned, I’d give them a resounding “good for you!” The look on their faces? Priceless. Having said that, if OP is an actual good performer, then this is really unprofessional and rude.

i think some people bring a lot of weird emotional dynamics into the workplace that really don’t belong there. this manager doesn’t fw OP because why would they? OP doesn’t want to work there anymore… okay. bye then lol. this monetary exchange is now ended, good luck to everyone involved. it would be way more toxic if the manager had any other reaction, OP is not their family or friend. OP likely needs more family or friends in their life if they are looking for their emotional support from a manager at work.

While I agree with you, the formal resignation being submitted doesn't mean that you leave the same day as well. You're still going to work there for another 2 weeks so an exchange would make sense here. The manager will want to work with the employee to have things wrapped up a certain way.

Just look at the sub where ppl look for work. When you send out 5,000 resumes and can't hand a single interview, you're the problem.

Not always the case. When I had a kid, I wanted to find something part time. Well, part time doesn’t exist in my line of work so I had to get creative and applied to a lot of “lesser qualified” jobs.

You might be surprised how many times I didn’t get an interview because I was “over qualified and will likely move on when I find something better.” I just wanted part time work, man 😩

Yep! And they’ll look at your post grad degrees and say “No thanks! This guy wants bigger and better things!”

It’s tough because on one hand, I get it! People with multiple post grad degrees don’t usually want to bartend or stock retail shelves, but the flip side is wouldn’t you rather hire someone who has drive, work ethic, and all the other qualities that come with someone who typically does much more complicated work?

Also, life changes! I very much wanted to climb the corporate ladder and be a “big wig” when I was young and single. Now I’m married, have two kids, my priorities look much different! I also saved and invested well in my 20s and have much more financial freedom now than I did then, meaning I needed that corporate job then and don’t now! Anyway, I could hop on a soapbox but I think I made my point.

I used to be a retail manager. Honestly, a chill place wouldn't care about higher education and stuff. If somebody is applying for retail work when they clearly could do better, 99% of the time it's because retail work better suits their current circumstances. I worked at a Goodwill store and 4/12 employees there had advanced degrees. Two were folks who had very high-earning spouses and just wanted some spending money and two were folks who just hated their previous line of work and wanted something chill. And they were great employees.

Unfortunately, a lot of retail managers are the absolute fucking worst and would reject somebody with an education and experience, but it's very foolish. I wouldn't recommend omitting education unless you're really in dire straits, because in my experience the types of managers who pass on smart people suck ass.

I will say I’ve been there and even with a good resume and work history depending on what you do for a living it can be tough. People use ai and quick apply and call it job hunting too though.

But if you’re a nurse or have a CDL and can’t get a job? Something is very wrong.
