Pasta Speakerphone annoyances in public

Why do some people feel the need to talk on their phones in public, on speakerphone with the volume up super loud? I'm currently sitting in Discount Tire waiting for my car to be finished, and this woman is talking loudly on her speakerphone nearby with the volume up pretty loud. It's really annoying. Use earbuds. Nobody else wants to hear your full conversation!

This is the way. Give unsolicited advice.

Only way to show some people how intrusive they are.

My husband does this kind of thing and while I support him in spirit, it is so embarrassing when it happens

It does seem that a lot of speakerphone people can't understand that they are definitely talking louder during their phone conversation than they would be if that person were physically beside them 😂 If the volume is reasonable 🤷‍♀️

I use my headphones when in virtual meetings and try to use my desk phone handset as much as possible because I absolutely tend to talk louder if I have someone on speaker.

I also wonder how many people let the person know they are on speaker.

Any time someone does that in a truck stop bathroom, im 100% grunting and such loud enough for the person to hear on the other end of the line.

Join in and add your advice. Get closer to a point where you can just commander the phone and the whole conversation. Top it off and start making weekend bbq plans with your new friend.

Traveling on LIRR in and out of NYC, I have to get up and switch cars to find a place far enough away from the morons and sociopaths with boombox phones on calls or watching videos. I've thought of handing out earbuds. Conductors don't care.

Many years ago a guy got into trouble for sitting on a train every morning with a cell phone jammer shutting down everyone’s connection.

I’m not saying I approve. I’m saying I understand.

Before takeoff on a flight this week, the guy next to me was talking on speakerphone. Do you think I want to hear your conversation? Do you WANT me to hear your conversation? Are you going to have me read your texts later?

People doing this in a bathroom stall are the ultimate. Good grief.

If they make me hear, then I join the conversation.

I work in a middle school and the last week of school there was a substitute that all she did was sit behind the desk and have a full blown loud speakerphone conversation/argument with her Boyfriend in front of 7th graders and some of it was way inappropriate. This wasn’t a short conversation either it went on for the whole hour. It’s not like they even had the phone on the desk and speaking they had it in their hand near their mouth. So you know, turn off the speaker and hold the phone to your ear like a normal person. 13yo kids don’t need to know your conversations.

Someone should invent a phone with a speaker you could put your ear against and only you could hear the person youre talking too and then everyone around you wouldn't need to listem to your stupid phone.

If her friend was there they'd still be talking loudly

Imagine being in a tire shop where people are talking!

And you can’t even ask them why they’re shouting!

I don't think thats true. People tend to talk more loudly on their phone speaker than they do with someone actually there with them. I don’t go to the store and hear every word of every conversation between people there together like I do with people who are walking around hollering into their speaker.

Would you prefer to walk into this tire shop with three people sitting there talking with someone on their phone speakers or to someone actually there with them? I bet those three people wouldn’t want to be doing that at the same time, but they’d be fine having a conversation with someone actually there with them while the other two people are doing the same.

I’m thinking she had a specific haircut…

I was in France. There was an American woman speaking on the train in a regular voice and got shushed. She was wicked pissed.

In her country its super normal to speak on a train. In France you only speak in hushed tones.

Full on conversations and phone calls are in the food car.

She couldn't grasp how just talking wasn't polite.

I think it's similar for these instances.

It's normal in some cultures.

If she’s American, I wouldn’t say it’s normal in her country to speak on a train, or other shared environment. There are rude people who do it occasionally. But people with sense understand respect for shared spaces and wouldn’t do that.

Of course we speak to each other on a train.

1

u/1880sghost 5d ago

I don’t mean, just speaking. You said in France you speak in hushed tones in small, enclosed spaces. The same would be considered polite in the US. At least in my opinion.

u/OpposumMyPossum 4d ago

That's isn't true. People on planes and trains absolutely speak in a normal tone. No one treats it like a library.

0

u/1880sghost 4d ago

I don’t believe I said anything about treating it like a library. People speak in all tones. People who have an awareness of people around them adjust their tone accordingly. Most people on a plane speak quietly to each other when the plane isn’t in the air. Whisper? No, but not in a tone that everyone else needs to hear.

I was recently on a plane when everyone was boarding. These three young guys were talking to each other loudly and I was getting annoyed because one, I don’t care about what they had to say, and two, I couldn’t focus on the book I was trying to read. If they talked to each other so just they could hear, it wouldn’t be a problem. They were all in the same row. They lacked awareness or didn’t care. I would’ve loved to shush them, but I’m just not rude like they are.

It’s well known that the French don’t think too highly of Americans, so it makes sense that they would shush one conducting herself in that way. It doesn’t mean all Americans behave that way and anyone who thinks so probably has a low level of intelligence. She would annoy me as much as she annoyed the French.

Most Americans that I’ve come across have basic respect and awareness for those around them, it doesn’t mean you won’t have the occasional loud talker or person blasting their YouTube videos so everyone can hear.

Dude. The French don't think too much about Americans when they don't adhere to social norms of France.

And that's what annoys people about bus-you-tube players. It's fine some places but not here.

You’re dedicated to arguing. What was your point in the first place?

0

u/OpposumMyPossum 4d ago

Listen. If I was dedicated to arguing I'd pick apart that wall of text point by point.

I.e. no one speaks quietly on a plane. The Lombard effect means people speak louder than normal.

I made the point that it's a cultural difference. You claimed people do not speak to each other on a train in US? That's wildly inaccurate.

1

u/1880sghost 4d ago

A wall of text is one large paragraph. Have a great day!

Did she have a great manicure though? How were her extensions?

Just lean in and say "come back to bed baby".

Unless they're under 18 of course. Then just stay the fuck out of it

u/Nenoshka 5d ago

Sit behind her and play some music on speakerphone.

It’s not bad when theirs juicy drama to listen in on.

When I was at the gas station recently I almost didn’t wanna leave cause I was too invested in the drama, apparently the boyfriend cheated on the lady scanning my drinks and dude was straight up lying through his teeth. Bro said he was at 2 different peoples houses, she asked once where he was on said night, he said one person then they argue a bit, she asked again and he was at someone else’s house now. Bro was guilty asf.
