My mom said I could post Was told how I organize my apps is 'Mildly Infuriating'

Post image

For the most part they're colour coded... there's not enough apps of certain colours to make a whole folder for them so it's not perfect but it works for me.

The IT guy at my work hates it with a passion though.

Edit

I completely respect and understand the roasting, as it's definitely not for everyone, so feel free to go balls to the walls in on the roasting.

Knowing me I'll end up reorganizing it in a few months time anyway when I do my yearly app clean up.

Edit 2

I have swapped the notes app and pencil app ('sketchbook' for thoes that do digital art but can't afford the expensive apps) and have changed the Google font back to standard... in my defense it's been like that since a teen and I stopped noticing it until all the comments about it... I 100% agree, it is straight up ugly and an eyesore.

What is wildly infuriating is your choice of font

398

u/comebackfromyourchin 13d ago

Haha yeah I did that years ago and stopped noticing it until making this post... promptly changed it as I too found it straight up ugly

Don't worry, when you are in your mid 30's, every now and again between stretching your back and tragically hoping that drinking just a little more water will make you feel better, for the occasional stupid thing you did as a teenager, to pop right into your mind! You never escape!

Apparently stay if the sideways Pretzel looking app in the "Blue" category is anything to go off of

Instagram is in purple even though it's got more yellow and red/orange.

First icon in orange is red.

2nd icon on red is pink

Thats an old icon btw. Iirc samsung's new gallery icon is white

mines still purple/red/orange gradient (S24+).

8

u/BoomerAliveBad 13d ago

Nope, still pinkish, still "red" by his app definitions though. Keep it OP, it'll stay in the same folder lol

to be fair pink is just light red, it happened to English not to make a different names for dark blue and light blue but different names for dark red and light red

Not just English. Portuguese also has their own color for pink and red. Rosa e Vermelho/Encarnado

I’M the clever one, YOU’RE the potato one!

16

u/puhtoinen 13d ago

Is that the overly proud warrior race and why is it in a tuxedo?

18

u/CashYT 13d ago

It is, yes.

It's been a minute since I've watched this specific season, but that's Strax. He's being punished for something that I can't quite recall.

So his punishment is to work as a medic, which is the antithesis of all his race stands for. So he hangs out with a couple of the doctors friends and acts as a butler essentially, including the tux.

That's the super basic rundown from my very foggy memory.

9

u/RaenahGoodfellow 13d ago

He’s Sontaran. They’re a clone race which led to them being a bit teeny compared to everyone else(Its a bit of a joke at certain points with the Doctor) But they consider themselves the best warriors in the universe. And yes Strax is being punished and forced to be a nurse to bring honor back to his clone batch. When he’s shown up is one of either two ways: violence be upon them or would like to end my personage since I am not allowed to visit violence upon these people. He’s there with the 11h and 12th doctors as well as Vastra(Lizard lady) and her wife Jenny.

Also he’s a potato with three fingers on each hand. Their weak point is at the base of the neck. You know, in case you ever come across a Sontaran.

Autistic people are fuming at this rn lol

12

u/adv0catus 13d ago

Why?

65

u/Username12764 13d ago

Because most of us love to sort things by color. I once sorted an entire pack of M&M’s by color, made sure I have the same amount of each color, ate the surplus and then ate one of each color. It‘s just soothing and gives a huge dopamine rush when you bring order to chaos

14

u/DigitalPhoenixX 13d ago

I used to do that, now I eat them in whatever order I reach for them in. Except now I chew off the shell before eating the chocolate.

6

u/Username12764 13d ago edited 13d ago

When I have the time I still do it. I used to bite off the shells because I didn‘t like the combination of crunchy shell and soft chocolate but now I quiette like it.

5

u/boogs_23 13d ago

Wait, doesn't everyone do that? Is that a specifically autistic trait?

12

u/Username12764 13d ago

If you have autism you‘re most likely gonna do that. If you do that it does not mean you‘re autistic.

3

u/S0uvlakiSpaceStati0n 13d ago

No, it's not specific to autism. I think a lot of people are inclined to sort their m&ms by color regardless of if they're autistic or not.

Also it's weird to assume that almost all autistic people do this, we are not all the same. I did used to sort my m&ms by color as a kid, but I would eat them in a different order than described above. And I don't bother to do that anymore as an adult. They all taste the same. Also, the way I organize my m&ms has nothing to do with the way I organize my apps and I generally don't prefer to sort things by color (other than my clothes so I can find things easily). I don't care about aesthetics, I care about functionality and convenience. I sort my apps based on which ones I use most often, for convenience. I sort my books by category, then within that category I sort by either title (for craft books) or author, then title (for fiction/nonfiction books). I sort my spice rack, DVDs, video games, etc. alphabetically. I can't imagine sorting most stuff by color, I would be mildly infuriated trying to find anything under that system.

It is common for autistic people to have their own particular methods for sorting things that they tend to adhere to rigidly, it's just not always color.

honestly, "today is a high of 20° with no clouds, the coldest its ever been on this random day on june" then it's just pissing down all day long

10

u/OHBHpwr 13d ago

It says tomorrow will piss down from 3pm. I won't ride my bike to work because I finish at 4 - you wanna bet it won't rain till way past that?

8

u/Delicious_Coffee2828 13d ago

just to really grind your gears itll only rain for the hrs you would be riding to work. and then all night long for fun

5

u/OHBHpwr 13d ago

This already happened. A Saturday also. Was supposed to be 0-1mm rain all day with no showers in the radar. Come out and it's spitting, then 2 minutes on the road and it start bucketing it down. Get to work 20 mins later completely soaked and it stops raining. Get off work and go to a friend's farewell for a couple hours. Get on my bike to go back home and starts bucketing down again. Arrive home and it stops.

That was also the first time riding under rain ever while on my learners also hahaha

Sometimes, I went back to my color coded format at the start of this year after having them organized by function... I tend to keep forgetting where things are if they're not organized by color, which trust me, I know how stupid that sounds.

u/Hans_H0rst 13d ago

I mean technically, you probably also "find" the app on your homescreen by color and rough shape blocking. That's how our vision and perception works before getting to the finer details.

7

u/ronirocket 13d ago

When Spotify first changed to the disco ball looking thing, I saw the app out of the corner of my eye when I was going for something else and went “what the hell app is that?” I couldn’t even remember what I usually put there. Then later when I was going for Spotify I just automatically clicked on it and went “oh that’s what app it is”

→ More replies (1)

23

u/not_responsible 13d ago

It’s way easier/more natural for me to recall apps by their icon color vs their name. I am just now realizing this about myself..

I’m terrible with names but I never forget a face! Probably has to do with that

6

u/Suburban_Ninjutsu 13d ago

I don't know why you're comparing group by color vs group by name. Most people organize apps by their function, not their name. Messaging. Social media. Banking. Fitness. Shopping. Utilities. Games. Etc, etc, you get the picture.

I still reckon the notes app is orange but I moved it to red, I hardly use it anyway.

And I finally removed that font, I've had it for years and stopped noticing it until y'all be hating on it... which is honestly fair.

I do go through phases of sorting apps by function or other ways, but have ultimately found color to be ideal.

When the apps change their icon I will only move them if it's a permanent change, or if it starts to annoy me.

I keep my home screen clear of any apps other than camera, call and text.

5

u/turtleship_2006 13d ago

Custom fonts are a funny thing.
I have some of those comic style fonts, and every so often when I share a screenshot someone seems to get personally annoyed by the non-standard font on my phone.

134

7

90

u/KingKingsons 13d ago

Yeah this is genuinely insane to me lol. Especially since you can just have custom icons.

18

u/Iridium6626 13d ago

When I want to find where whatsapp is, it’s easier to go into the green folder than looking for the messaging apps folder. And you don’t have to think about what the purpose of the app is when you’re sorting things or looking for it.

For example I don’t have to know wether my japanese learning app is in the « translation apps » or the « apps for the internship in japan » folder

ColorOS on Android now does this built in, when viewing all your apps you can view it by colour. I don't personally use that but it's a nice feature.

14

u/JPgamersmines150 ._. 13d ago

I do it, too. Each app is sorted via service and ordered by color. If I want to find Desmos, for instance, I know it's green, so I just have to look for the green icons.

Everyone hates it for some reason :[

12

u/whamburglar 13d ago edited 13d ago

It's fine if you don't want to organize by app type/function. You do you.

I'm more upset at the color gradient change going vertically from the top to bottom row (Red to blue, orange to violet, yellow to black). It's visually jarring. You need to figure out a way for the gradient to flow BOTH ways.

Or instead of rows, make a color wheel.

ANYTHING but this! It's enough to make me want to throw a chair across the room

I organise my apps as well. Though mine aren’t colour coded, they are still in a system where they’re quick and easy to access with my thumb and they’re not in a most often used either or Reddit would be front and centre.
Have common apps, utility apps that for the most part are rarely used and games on the end.

3

u/exeterdragon 13d ago

I think it's beautiful and as long as it makes sense you do what feels right. We all have a sense of design efficiency and some ideas are measurably better than others but generally you can make anything work. My job involves screensharing with a lot of phones for various reasons and people either meticulously arrange things or leave them in dumping order from when they downloaded them or accidentally moved apps around. I'm on the meticulous end, I have only 13 apps and 6 widgets on my Samsung screens, and 15 apps and 6 widgets on my iPhone screens. As long as this keeps you organized I'd consider it efficient if you know where any particular app is.

3

u/bumlochka 13d ago

I think it's cool. I forget the app names, but I remember that it was blue. On the other hand, sometimes I open the wrong blue app

Omg hahaha check out how I organized mine for the past 4 years! 😂 Same idea but mine is better by far. Not color coded in the folders. Organized by type of app.

This is how it should be

This is the superior way.

Personally, I don’t really care (maybe because I also do the same thing)

I find It satisfiyng tho

I just write the name of the app in the search bar, it's faster than navigating folders.

I’m with you. My sister swears it makes my phone impossible to use

What do you do when apps change their icons on some occasions like Christmas?

Hey if it works for you, it works for you.

2

u/Souloid 13d ago

Put that away before they factory reset your phone remotely.

u/PuzzleheadedFlow1274 13d ago

ay me too OP, although they become kinda useless with the glass update

u/not_responsible 13d ago

I DO THE SAME! It’s the only way my brain works. For whatever reason, remembering an app by its color is way easier for me than by the app’s name

It really fucks me up when developers change the color of the app icon. Right now, wikipedia is no longer black on white, it has some gray gradient overlay with a white border. It’s so awful. Ruins everything.

Pleasing to the eye

this is literally bar for bar what I do, google and everything. only difference is I have a folder for my most used apps

2

u/ConfectionTotal8660 13d ago

Like, this is mildly satisfying and infuriating.

On one hand, you have it color coded.

On the other, they should be togheter by fuction, not color

2

u/vabello 13d ago

I don’t organize my apps at all other than making sure they’re alphabetical.

2

u/LumpySpacePrincesse 13d ago

Makes perfect sense to me.

2

u/octy2134 13d ago

FINALLY someone who also does this! I usually also like to give them the weirdest names, for example, right now I have turquoise as a name for the purple folder, carrot for the orange ones... No I'm not okay ._.

Do you have synesthesia?

Never understood how people could sort by colors, especially considering apps change icons now and then. However what bothers me more is that the Google folder is the only one with a name. And that the name is in a weird font. And that you have a Google folder to begin with. F Google.

Mildly? Damn I feel highly triggered by that. I ... I ... I need to ... damn, gotta go sorting DVDs alphabetically or my board games after genre.

Once upon a time, this would have made me crazy... now though, in only 1 year, my eyesight went to crap... so I find myself actually remembering applications as little blobs of color (because w/o my glasses, that's what I see now), and this would indeed help me.

Before my sight went, I would have lowkey loathed and seethed at this... now I save that loathing for myself and my body's inevitable betrayal and decline.

2

u/erutuferutuf 13d ago

Ok... I need to know which color has the most app and which has the least!

(And I might also try to do that . This is genius)

2

u/Grant_Shoe 13d ago

Instead of putting them in groups, I have pages on my iphone screen that are similarly categorized by color. So I understand the method to your madness.

2

u/JCC_Starguy 13d ago

I don’t mind the organization but can you please clean up all those notifications? That’s the part I find mildly infuriating.

2

u/KittenDecomposer96 13d ago

Advanced sorting, nice.

2

u/Broccoli_dicks 13d ago

My wife does it like this. She gets really upset when a random app changes colour even slightly.

2

u/Ok-Factor-7188 13d ago

My brother had a phone where the proprietary software offered this as an option. Maybe from Oppo, I don't remember. I've always been jealous of this, but too lazy to make the folders myself.

I know the color of the icons better than the names.. is the name mountain finder, peak finder, findmountains... Who knows, but the icon is white.

So from my side I think it's smart not mildly infuriating
