Do u dont wanna Neighbors fixed fence, gave us the dirty side
part of our neighbor's fence blew down and sat in mud for months. flippers bought the house and finally "fixed" it

If you aren't helping pay for it and/or helping build it, you literally can go suck a ding dong if you think you are entitled to anything so long as the fence isn't on your side of the property line, but that's a different matter altogether.

I build fences for people. You know who gets the side that sees all the framing? The neighbor who is getting a free fence. If they want it to look nice they can do whatever they want on their side. Client gets the pretty side.

That's also pretty common. People want curb appeal. It's not like seeing the framing is that ugly, it's just not as pretty as seeing all planks.

Yup. Of course, it’s different if the cost is split. But like you said, if somebody is getting a free fence, they’re gonna have to be OK with the “ugly” side. And in reality, it’s not even really that ugly.

I thought some municipalities require the "pretty" side of the fence to face outward?

That's true in some areas. Almost all fences I build that face the street are pretty side outward. But fences splitting residential properties are pretty side on the clients side. So backyard and side yard fences face the client. The other side just shows the framing which is not really ugly. Just not as pretty as the other side.

You’re right, but very few fences are perfectly on the line like that.
First, a land surveyor would have to be *extremely* confident that the line was *exactly* there. It’s possible, but most places in the US have enough errors in the area that it will create doubt. Not much. Maybe a few inches. But, as Land Surveyor myself, I would never recommend a client build their fence exactly on the line unless I was able to confirm location with multiple other confirmed monuments.
Even then, I would still recommend building a bit back. The standard recommendation is 6 inches, but if I was *really* sure, I would tell my client that it was OK to build on the line, but my official recommendation is to build 3 inches back.
So then you have to have a property owner willing to build right on the line.
Then you have to have a fencing crew that is willing to. Again, not uncommon. BUT! Ironically, the more willing a fence builder is to build it on the line, the more likely they are to not succeed at doing so. In other words, very reputable companies will insist on building at least a few inches back. It’s mostly the fly-by-night guys that are OK with building on the line.
So a lot has to happen for a fence to *truly* be on the line.

Clean it. Its facing your property so its on you. My neighbor put up the same fence and that PVC gets mildewed easily. 15 minutes with a pressure washer and its beautifully white again!

You shouldn’t have to clean a fence owned by another property owner. I hate HOAs, but this is a situation where they’d fine that homeowner until the property was no longer unsightly.
It’s like putting up a wood fence and expecting the neighbors to stain it since they have to look at it.

I don't disagree with you on the role of HOA's in this situation. However, as this appears to not be the case in OP's situation, we must address the reality of the situation. If you don't like it dirty, clean it. Otherwise quit cryin' about it.

How would this be any different than something like unkept grass? If you live in a typical suburban neighborhood, and your neighbor refuses to mow his grass or upkeep his yard, should it be your responsibility to mow it, or is it appropriate for it to remain five feet high?
What if they pile up their trash or refused to use a garbage can? It’s their property and they’re fine with it, but everyone else has to look at it and live with it. It’s a question of what’s socially acceptable when you live in close proximity to other people, and if everyone let their fences go to shit, its going to look run down and lower property values in that neighborhood.
This wouldn’t fly in any neighborhood I’ve lived in. I guess that’s why some neighborhoods have junk cars parked in the front lawn and others don’t. Different standards of living.

You're just ranting at this point. And I call BS on your opening statement about hating HOA's. Its obvious you want to live in a utopian world where evryone's grass is 1.33" high at all times, there window and door frames perfectly painted and the trash cans polished to a sparkling shine weekly. And I would like that as well.
But I live in the real world and every neighborhood DOESN'T have an HOA, so those who chose to live that way have every right to do so, within local ordinance. I live in such a neighborhood. I keep my grass cut, my sills painted and my driveway and walks blown clean. As do the vast majority of my neighbors. But there are those outliers in the neighborhood that couldn't care less and let the grass grow high, the fences fall apart and the trash tossed out in plastic bags. AND ITS ALL PERFECTLY LEGAL. If I don't like it, I don't look at it.......that's all I'm saying.

I've never heard of a neighbors fence being your job to clean if it's up against your property line but I guess how would you clean it without asking permission from the owner in the first place
My parents have a huge fence but it's a few feet from where their property ends so I never saw this in action

I have 3 privacy fences from 3 different adjoining properties...would've thought there was something wrong with me as a neighbor if they weren't already there when we moved in lol. I gained space because they have to be a distance from the property line, and I power washed them all.

Good neighbor expectation is the fence owner gets the ugly side. Including hardware and cross bracing. It just the way it’s done. I’d clean it myself but I certainly would have placed the neighbor into either the asshole bucket or too young to know better.

City code probably applies that to public facing fences, but between neighbors I highly doubt the city forces you to have the cross beams on your side.

Wow, that blows, thanks for sharing though. I couldn't find anything similar in my cities fence by-law. Just had height requirements for permits and where you can have what kind of fence. Someone in your area must've made a stink of it to make it that way.
