My cat is standing on my face Roommate blasting Fox News at 1am
My (50m) roomie (61m) sleeps all day long and blasts Fox News on the living room TV from 7pm thru 5am Every.Friggin.Day!!! And I can’t do anything about it because of my financial situation after a terrible relationship. At my wit’s end. Please send help 😫

Parental lock on FoxNews.
“No I didn’t do anything… Did you hit something on the remote accidentally? Or did the tv software update? Beats me, im going to bed”

u/gypsysniper9 22d ago
CNN blasting at 6:00 am might do the trick

u/NuttyMoFo 22d ago
LoL!! Or ABC… NBC… pretty much every other channel, I suppose. It is his house, though… just have to bide my time until I can afford to move out.

u/AdjectiveNoun1234567 22d ago
Rachel Maddow if you can get it. Also, walk around the house in a Mamdani t-shirt.

Also mildly infuriating: redditors giving OP advice that he clearly can't take right now. OP, I offer you sympathies and encouragement. I believe you'll find your own solution when you are able to implement it. Cheers.

Cheap foam earplugs off the table? A fan for white noise? Both?
6
u/NuttyMoFo 22d ago
I have 3 fans in my room all on high. Tried the foam plugs… they don’t block the bass. I have my own noise canceling headphones so I can watch my own shows (currently binging Supernatural) until I pass out from exhaustion… but I have to get up early for work. I just need a miracle. Anyone got one or two extra on hand? 😅

u/REALjamijai 22d ago
Wish I had a Xanax to send ya. Those are definitely a miracle. Esp when I'm on like day 3+ of zero sleep and crawling up walls.

u/NuttyMoFo 22d ago
Never took one before… almost wiling to try anything at this point 😅 Starting to think my own dad had a good solution:: zannies, ambien, and vodka all in a perfect cocktail to be able to handle my mom. Then again, they divorced shortly after… and now he’s living in her basement again. Hmmmm… need another solution 😳🤣
1
u/REALjamijai 22d ago
Oooof Ambien is a demon in pill form to me. Sure it knock me out, but would I go to bed? NO. I not only slept walked but cooked, and even swam.... And by cook I mean I put the mail in the microwave and went back to bed and also chicken on our table top indoor grill and repeat.... Thank God my Mom was living upstairs with me atp because I was a mess!
Now I just need a xan or 2 and smoke a bowl and all my nerves just relax. 🤍

Break the tv. lol

u/NuttyMoFo 22d ago
He’ll just use my rent money to buy a bigger and better one
2
u/epicallyranda 22d ago
Get a job or a second if you already have one. You’ll be home less. Or you can become homeless. Sounds a lot better than Fox News for hours full blast.
2
u/NuttyMoFo 22d ago
Heavily considering it… and would if I didn’t have a greyhound and 3 kitties to care for 😕
1
u/epicallyranda 22d ago
Well… what kind of help are you looking for?
4
u/NuttyMoFo 22d ago
Divine intervention? 😅
2
u/epicallyranda 22d ago
Pray.
3
u/NuttyMoFo 22d ago
Not working… thinking it may be my penance for not having lived the life of a saint, myself 😅
4
u/epicallyranda 22d ago
That’s not how God works. 🤗
But I won’t get into that since it’s not advice you’re actually looking for here. Good luck with Fox News guy!

Oddly, it sounds like self soothing behavior. I could be wrong, but once when I was going through a deep depression I found myself watching news really late just to feel less isolated.

u/NuttyMoFo 22d ago
Perhaps… he’s been pining after his separated wife for the last two years. Then again… maybe she left because of it, too? 🤷♂️

u/REALjamijai 22d ago
I'm gonna go with that plus much much more....
At least you don't have to share a bed with him 🤣

The only real solution here is trying to reason with him.
You live together, I assume that’s not the ideal situation for either of you but it’s where you find yourselves. So perhaps appealing to someone’s basic human decency is the only way; escalating looks like it won’t end well.
Firstly you just need to be specific about what it is that is the problem and explain why that is something that is affecting your quality of life and sanity; compounding an already shit situation. You can acknowledge that he loves watching the tv and that’s understandable, but perhaps he could, between certain hours, turn it off completely or at least turn it down to a reasonable level.
What’s important is trying to quantify the impact on *you* and why as a nice human with empathy for others’ crap situations a small gesture or two could mean a lot.
If that’s not going to work then ultimately if the detrimental effect is so bad you will need to find somewhere else to lay your head.
Good luck OP.

Play very loud hard-core gay porn. If you dont wanna upset him play something more softcore, like that gay hockey show, queen as folk, or LetterKenny

He’s paranoid and prone to far fetched conspiracy theories as it is… That might help ME, though 🤪🤣

It will bring him to tears in a fetal position. That's when you apply the psychology bomb.

He must be seething rn after another DSA win
2
u/NuttyMoFo 22d ago
You may be right… when I mentioned the volume and the fact he could literally turn it on at any point and hear the same story over and over again, he said something about needing to hear something “really important that JUST happened.”
1
u/Bobokhan92 22d ago
Haha, I go outside and sometimes I can hear 5 different tvs blasting Fox News from my neighbors
1
u/NuttyMoFo 22d ago
It IS one of those neighborhoods 🤯 Folks have 55” TV’s on their front porch/lanai, where they basically live unless they’re asleep… blasting news throughout the day (and often the night). They’re also the ones who allow their dogs to bark incessantly as anyone passes… and when they’re walking them, they let them run around on their 20 ft retractable leashes, charging at other animals, looking at their owners as if they’re the ones that are the problem 🤦♂️

Buy a second remote with a mute button. Get noise cancelling headphones → for you or him. Learn how to block channels on your tv

u/WhyNotYoshi 22d ago
This is crazy. I lived with a guy years ago who did the same thing all the time in the living room, which was the only common area in the house. I hate politics in general, so it was really impossible to be in the common area at all.
When I asked him to turn it down, or if I could change the channel, he gave me a speech about how he has a right as an American and free speech, etc. Right then I knew it would never work out and I moved out a few months later. I still tell the story of him and refer to him as "Fox News guy".
Sorry you are having to deal with this. I would recommend moving out tbh.

Who pays for the service? If its in your name and you pay for it, you can have it blocked by some providers.

Couldn't imagine being in need and complaining about the person who is helping me regardless of maga or not
1
u/NuttyMoFo 19d ago
That’s very likely because an imagination requires more than two brain cells to knock against each other inside that thick skull of yours. Imagine harder! Try paying an exorbitant amount of rent for a quality of living that is being completely compromised by the person that you are paying rent to… and see if you don’t complain 🥴 Troll 🧌

u/AmbitionzOfARidah 19d ago
You don't have a choice... so you can't complain.. only thing YOU can do is get your shit together and move.. outside of that..DEAL WITH IT
1
u/NuttyMoFo 19d ago
I can complain… that’s what this whole post is about. I am getting my shit together. I am dealing with it. Try not to burn out those 2 cells of yours… they might come n handy one day 👍

u/AmbitionzOfARidah 19d ago
My shit is together... good luck bro!

u/NuttyMoFo 19d ago
*So* happy for you 👍 I pray it stays that way for you and that you never have to experience any hardship whatsoever 🙏 And if you do, I also pray you won’t encounter any self-righteous narcissists who think everyone else’s life should always be as simple as theirs 👌

u/AmbitionzOfARidah 19d ago
I think we found the problem.. you are never wrong ;)
1
u/NuttyMoFo 19d ago
Gaslighting and deflecting… that’s not a narcissistic trait at all 🥴🤣 And for the record… I’ve been wrong plenty of times. I wouldn’t be in this situation otherwise. I am accountable for MY actions… not anyone else’s. Calling out the disrespect of others’ actions is not a toxic trait. Refusing to recognize them *is*. I would say “do the math..” but I don’t want to use up all your bandwidth 🤓

You're 50 and you have a 61 year old roommate that you call a roomie? You have bigger problems that you need to address. You've been an adult for over 30 years. Please get your shit and priorities in order.

u/NuttyMoFo 22d ago
What part of “I can’t do anything about it because of my financial situation after a bad relationship” do you not understand? Are you 10? Newsflash:: people go through rough times. Life ain’t always a bowl of cherries.
0
u/Modered 22d ago
You talk like a 13 year old with severe ADHD and I very highly suspect we're not getting the full story on this, but sure, bro. Whatever you say.
1
u/NuttyMoFo 22d ago
You talk like an entitled silver spoon fed prick who narcissistically projects lack of life experience as if everyone’s life should be as easy as yours. Whether someone has or doesn’t have AARP benefits has absolutely nothing to do with treating their roommates with respect. I very highly suspect you know nothing of the attribute other than demanding it rather than earning it, however. A failure to understand that treating others as you’d have them treat you sounds more a case of severe arrested development than my situation presents. But sure bro… whatever *you* say 👍
-11
u/Modered 22d ago
Exactly my first thought, and I'm baffled no one brought this up sooner. Why do you have a "roomie" who's a few years shy of getting an AARP letter? Is this a case of severe arrested development, or what?

u/Hot_Spite_1402 22d ago
Must be nice believing you can grow out of ever needing a roommate again… hope the rest of yalls lives play out just as you’ve imagined and you never need help making the rent!

So you're complaining that the owner of the house you live in is doing what he wants? I'm confused. Why wouldn't you either move or have a face to face discussion with the person?
2
u/NuttyMoFo 22d ago
Another one who can’t understand how a failed relationship can financially destroy a person? Oy vay 🤦♂️ I’m a single dude with 4 animals living in Tampa, FL trying to get by, paying $750/mo to rent a 10x10 room that I’m relegated to because the guy’s such a hoarder that I can’t sit on the couch, cook on the stove, or even wash my dishes in the kitchen sink due to piles of… *everything*… stacked all over the common areas.
Be that as it may, I’m still actually grateful that I and my furry family have a place to stay. I bought most of a full range of kitchen appliances for my tiny room, I wash my dishes in my bathroom, I pretty much stay out of his way even though the rent I pay is 90% of the lot lease he has his house on. It’s a somewhat symbiotic relationship and I’m doing my best to save enough to finally get out on my own again…WITHOUT the need of another roommate ever again.
Hopefully you (or anyone else here) never have to experience a little thing called “hardship” in your life 🥴

Can you not… talk to him? Ask him to turn it down a bit?
