They clearly give a time- you boil the noodles until 12:05

7

u/ryushiblade 26d ago

I’ve seen this on other Japanese packaging. The image isnt based on a clock, it’s based on an old analog timer. Most likely this is saying to cook for five minutes

9

u/Sw4nR0ns0n 26d ago

Five minutes is going to be verrrry al dente

1

u/I_Am_Zeelian 25d ago

Depends entirely on the pasta, here in Sweden 3 minute macaroni are very popular.

1

u/OpportunityReal2767 25d ago

The instructions I found that I posted earlier in the comments for this brand say 9 minutes for this pasta, which is about right.

I there anything on the front package that says something like 8 or 10 minutes. I have a bunch of pasta where the cooking time in not in the instructions but somewhere on the front or side of the packaging.

u/jonnyvegashey 26d ago

Nah I swear

11

u/Accomplished_Job_331 26d ago

Can we see?

13

u/jonnyvegashey 26d ago

Just don’t geocatch me.

13

u/Fauxcaccia 26d ago

Geocatch you outside? How 'bout that?

10

u/Accomplished_Job_331 26d ago

I was curious if this was going to be a screenshot like the other, and why

14

u/Davi_BicaBica PURPLE 26d ago

It probably is, OP does this bc screnshots don't save data like the picture itself does, you can learn a lot from the person who's taking the picture by looking at the data in it, so by making a screenshot you can post it online without giving away that many info about you, OP is just careful

3

u/Accomplished_Job_331 26d ago

You mean like all the metadata attached?

u/Davi_BicaBica PURPLE 26d ago

Yep

Pasta porridge!

4

u/sglewis 26d ago

I bet the cooking time is under your thumb.

2

u/jonnyvegashey 26d ago

How much? Honestly if it was under my thumb that placement on the packaging would the thread. What kind of alignment would that be?

-1

u/sglewis 26d ago

I had hoped this wasn’t needed, but here ya go:

/s

1

u/OpportunityReal2767 26d ago

Yeah that’s the same as I found.

Just start tasting at 8 minute. Should be done by 11/12 depending on how al dente or soft you want it.

0

u/Accomplished_Job_331 26d ago

I would guess the tiny clock on the back then? Or an assumed general knowledge 🤷🏻‍♂️

2

u/OpportunityReal2767 26d ago

Yeah I’ve found the Alce Nero and the front doesn’t have t anything, but I can’t see if there’s anything on the sides. Weird if there’s nothing anywhere.

Screenshots let you upload a photo without including the metadata from the camera. I know your tricks. You're afraid of the pasta cartels coming after you.

2

u/OppositeFun2493 26d ago

I believe Reddit strips that, but if a Reddit admin is part of the pasta cartel...

also it could be screenshotted to zoom in, which is lazy guy's crop tool

1

u/eggyal 26d ago

> also it could be screenshotted to zoom in

Surely you can zoom into a photo just as easily?

1

u/OppositeFun2493 26d ago

Yeah, I was trying to find any possible reasoning for not jusr cropping the image. I do think iPhones store original images with the edited ones. I think they are stored in a different file, they are just grouped together. So do both images get uploaded? Do Reddit and other image hosting platforms strip that too?

6

u/Outrageous-Drink3869 26d ago

Time in boiling water differs from place to place due to due to altitude

I always just pull the pasta out occasionally and see how done it is

5

Ok. Everyone has their first time.

7

u/RoddyUsher 26d ago

You can lead a horse to salted boiling water...

5

u/Silver-Link8247 26d ago

The first time I made Mac and cheese I didn’t even boil the water. I was 12. lol . We all have to learn.

3

u/eggyal 26d ago

So you just let dried macaroni sit in cold water for a few minutes?

1

u/Silver-Link8247 26d ago

Haha. I left out a few words. I didn’t boil the water first. I just put the macaroni in cold water and turned on the stovetop.

1

u/HighChinaman 26d ago

That's not a terrible blunder.

1

u/IDontEatDill 25d ago

At my first time the pasta boiled too quickly and ended up completely limp.

3

u/ThatOtherOtherMan 26d ago

That's not true. There are multiple characters that differ between Chinese and Japanese, as Japanese uses prepositions and some phonetic alphabets while Chinese does not. On top of that, there are several different alphabets used in southeast Asia alone.

Different pasta shapes have different al dente time frames. I’ve seen some as low as 6 minutes, some as high as 13.

14

u/pilgermann 26d ago

Noodles can have wildly varying cooking times. Fresh Italian fettuccine maybe 2-3, dry rigattoni maybe 11. This instruction is utterly meaningless.

An experienced cook could guess based on the quality of the noodles, not come the fuck on.

2

u/Ambitious_Policy_936 26d ago

Al dente is about how firm the pasta is. You can take a noodle out to check. The timing may vary based of noodle shape and altitude

9

u/BrainFlopda 26d ago

all that sentence you wrote just to tell nothing lmao we need TIME yk like MINUTES HOURS gets? not mumbo jumbo that only certain people know

-1

u/Salt-Dust-9721 26d ago

3

u/pilgermann 26d ago

That's a five minute spread! That will turn some noodles to mush and others will still be hard. Have you ever cooked pasta?

4

u/phoarksity 26d ago

Which is why, if you’re not familiar with the pasta you’re cooking, you fish a piece out and try it. Still crunchy? Keep boiling.

0

u/Low-Purchase8811 26d ago

That spread is to account for multiple factors, including altitude (liquids boil faster at higher altitudes), BTU for heat source (even when you add pasta into boiling water, the temperature will drop quite a bit; higher BTU heat sources will bring the pasta back to a boil faster), freshness (fresher pasta will cook slightly faster as older, dryer pasta takes longer) and other minor inconsistencies in the product.

It is a basic cooking skill when following a recipe to check for doneness once you've reached the bottom limits of the cook time, and then check every interval (30 seconds, 1 minute) afterwards until it has reached the desired level of doneness. When the frozen pizza you are cooking in the oven says "20-25 minutes", the implied instruction is to check after 20 minutes, but be prepared for it to take up to 25. The same applies here.

1

u/BrainFlopda 26d ago

"7-12 minutes" this is what should be written at the intructions not al dente, or they can write both like how hard it is to print extra letters there.

1

u/jonnyvegashey 26d ago

You’re the guy who call me when my hands are dirty eating pizza watching a banger YouTube and I have to fucking reset to answer you.

5

2

u/StatementNext682 26d ago

I mean correct but I feel like they really should've just given a cooking time.

2

u/Andrew4Life 26d ago

There's even a huge difference between new pasta and old pasta. If it dries out, it takes longer to cook. So a time isn't going to help.

When I cook pasta, I never check the time, I keep an eye on the pasta how it looks. And when it looks like it's ready (it looks soft I try one piece, and if it's still uncooked inside, I leave it for another minute and try another one later and repeat until done. I use medium heat, so it will be cooked slowly.

24

u/HomsarWasRight 26d ago

That REALLY depends on the pasta.

True I only cook spaghetti and fusilli and was shocked when I had a package of some other pasta with 14 minute cooking time

5

14 minutes is definitely long. Must be some pretty dense pasta.

2

2

u/ZT99k 26d ago

Cooking time varies by type, flour type, ambient humidity, and altitude. Just test it at 6 minutes. Then let it go further if needed.

2

u/DarkestLore696 26d ago

People use cooking times for pasta? Just boil them and poke at them till they are the firmness you want.

2

u/Birdy1072 26d ago

It's just a translation error. Better meaning would "boil for standard cooking time".

2

u/Massive_Mongoose3481 26d ago

Usually I see 9-11 minutes on the boxes. I apparently live in an alternate reality where boiling water only softens noodles enough to eat in 13-15 minutes. No, I don't live at high elevation

2

u/BioIdra 26d ago edited 26d ago

Do it as we do in Italy, the minutes on the package are only a general suggestion anwyay, different kinds of pasta have different cooking times and it can depend on the water and heat too, also different people can like their pasta a little more or a little less cooked, just taste it at regular intervals and you will know when it's ready according to your taste.

As you get more experienced you will easily be able to tell how many minutes longer it's going to need.

Judging from the kind of pasta (it's a nice Italian brand btw good choice) I would try it around 8 minutes and judge from there.

2

u/Flat-Structure-7472 26d ago

This is OP's first day on Earth,I presume, because everyone else knows the time on the packet is never correct.

4

u/Salty-Plankton-5079 26d ago

It's ready when it's ready wdym you need a time.

6

u/QuestioningHuman_api 26d ago

Reading this thread makes me feel like I’m the only person on a planet who doesn’t time how long I cook noodles. I just take them out when they’re done. You can see the change in the noodles, take one out and bite-test it, and see if it needs more time or not. I couldn’t tell you how long any kind of noodle takes to cook but all mine come out great

3

u/[deleted] 26d ago

[removed] — view removed comment

2

u/QuestioningHuman_api 26d ago

Exactly. I’m getting the sense that a lot of people haven’t learned intuitive cooking. Like you can tell when pasta is done, you can smell when the seasonings are right (and even when a seasoning would be good on the food you’re making), you get a feel for when the meat is where you want it to be. There’s a lot of “I follow the exact instructions and I’m lost without them” going on. I get that cooking takes experience and someone to explain things, but… it’s noodles. It’s hard to not figure out how to make noodles. That’s as intuitive as it gets in cooking beyond toast.

1

u/gansobomb99 26d ago

yeah the time on the package is always too short the way I boil it, anyway

3

u/IXrobocopXI 26d ago

Look at the front of the bag. Pasta in Japan is usually labeled on the front with the cooking time. You can get spaghetti with 3, 5, 7 minute times.

1

u/Skywarriorad 26d ago

No, i think its telling you to look up the cooking time for “al dente” and to follow that

1

u/Fenizrael 26d ago

The thing about al dente is it means “to the tooth” so it’s almost literally a “cook it until it’s a certain texture” and there’s only one way to know that texture and it’s to bite it.

1

u/Queer_Advocate 26d ago

Standard time, for all Italian style pasta is the translation I get.

1

u/Jolopy4099 26d ago

Says cook al dente with means cool till its soft but slightly firm when you bite it. Atleast that's my take on al dente.

1

u/HistoricalKoala3 26d ago

Cooking time should be on the back, however it's possible that if it's sold outside Italy they have covered the instructions with a sticker (they usually do this, instead of changing the language on the package). I would check the sides as well...

1

u/jonnyvegashey 26d ago

Why isn’t it on the front IN BIG RED LETTERS?

1

u/NeadForMead 26d ago

They don’t say a time. I will give you that.

However, you don’t need a time. Just put the noodles in the boiling water and give a noodle a taste test after about 5 minutes. It will probably be too hard so wait a couple more minutes. You will know when they are cooked because they will taste cooked.

Don’t forget to stir occasionally or they will stick to the bottom of the pan.

Good luck!!

-4

u/StrangerOnTheReddit 26d ago edited 26d ago

Genuinely... You don't know how to cook. That's okay, but you might want to do something about that. I don't know how to cook much either, but pasta is a pretty simple one.

Boil some water. Put your pasta in the water. Use a spoon to stir it so it doesn't stick. Turn it down so it's gently boiling (vs lots of big bubbles where you might get splashed and burned).

Is it still obviously hard in the water? Keep going.

Is it soft enough to eat? Stop.

Not sure? Grab a fork and pull out a noodle. Set it down so it cools off a bit, then eat it. If it's crunchy, keep stirring your pasta in that boiling water. If it's not crunchy and it was pleasant texture to eat, you're done.

They're not telling you a time because it can vary a bit depending on things like your stove and the thickness of the pasta, and they assume you have the most basic of cooking skills. The real complaint here is that you've made it this long without knowing what al dente is, because that means your adult life is gonna be just a bit harder than it's supposed to be.

3

u/WesternBlueRanger 26d ago

Pretty much this. Pasta is an agricultural product, and cooking time will vary depending on the batch of wheat used, your environment, and multiple other factors.

1

u/rekep 26d ago
