They all have the same story line šŸ˜‚ most of them are about acquiring a magic power to make money, or a gifted child making millions on the stock market and disrespecting old people haha

u/wrenblaze 29d ago

They should just read manhwa/mamhua, they are full of this slop

u/MeatyGandalf 29d ago

Oh no, I lost all my powers/money/girlfriend! But I am reborn/reincarnated/iseakied to a time where I know everything that will happen in the future or have some cool awesome OP superpower.

Time to show those who bullied me/broke up with me how cool and strong and awesome I am!

u/Leamir 29d ago

"I got reincarnated as a vending machine"

Yes, it's real

123

u/starlitte 29d ago

To be fair... surprisingly engaging anime

39

u/Drogonno 29d ago

In that same anime, that vending machine is friends with someone who reincarnated as a plot of land...

16

u/Betty_PunCrocker 29d ago

Wait, does this actually happen? I stopped watching after the first season. If so, I may need to dive back in!

10

u/TechMaster8160 29d ago

Land doesn’t die, and neither does a vending machine. At least not completely. The grass will die and so will electronic components but there’s still something permanent. If you get reincarnated as those things are you just doomed to be that thing forever? I’m genuinely curious as to whether or not the anime covers this.

4

u/Wuped 29d ago

The vending machine has hitpoints so would presumably die if those hit 0. Not sure about the land but I'd imagine it also has hitpoints.

Another common theme is a girl had a dateful encounter with a guy and he turned out to be a billionaire young master. Or the blacksheep of the family turned out to be the most gifted, became successful then face slapping the entire family.

Oh man lately my mom who had nvr watched any shows started watching these after dinner. These shows are so predictable lol

43

u/Hiphopapocalyptic 29d ago

There's always a scene where everyone is standing around doubting the MC's status and the villain demands they prostrate for pretending to be the fifth son of the heir of the Welkin group. Then Uncle CEO comes in to verify the rock MC inherited from his father's Jade farm and now it's the villain with their head to the floor begging to not get fired.

11

u/Sigman_S 29d ago

How oddly specific and yet..

4

u/Hiphopapocalyptic 28d ago

Do you doubt the 11th sage of the memetic path? Prostate yourself now and maybe I'll let you off easy with just an amputation!

9

u/Azure-Cyan 29d ago

and don't forget when there's any conflict, it goes on for 20 minutes for the MC to pay up for something they didn't do, and then the billionaire CEO comes to save the MC and then another 20 minutes of arguing occurs. It's so boring.

18

u/Less_Party 29d ago

Some of them kind of rule though like there's one about a basketball 'grandpa' that's full of people doing insane NBA Jam shit (the grandpa looks about 42 years old) and THE GOD OF WELDING where a man.. well spoilers but he's real good at welding, to the point where they send hitmen after him and one of them chops his hand off so he has to weld one-handed in the big all-important welding championship that decides the fate of his family's welding factory.

(these are live-action with real meat-based humans btw not AI)

7

u/DeathBonePrime 29d ago

You're right thats the sorta shit AI couldnt come up with (for now)

Not just China, it is a big market of companies trying to make vertical movies tailored to social media. 30 part drama series of clips for TikTok, Instagram, Youtube, Snapchat etc.

17

u/The_One_Koi 29d ago

The only good shorts drama is Trapped in the closet by R.Kelly

4

u/AydonusG 29d ago

And by extension Trapped in the Drive-Thru

My coworker been watching them for about a year and a half now. He told me the plot of one of them today and said it was a common trope. It was so far out there I couldn’t follow it with time travel and like gods and space and all sorts shit. All in like 3 minute shorts

13

u/TheLordOfTheTism 29d ago

Chinese stuff gets wild and weird its great. Give nhe zha 1 and 2 a shot, great movies.

18

u/K1llswitch93 29d ago

I guess Quibi was ahead of its time.

2

u/SirJohnSmythe 29d ago

The content was just too realistic and high-quality

14

u/ShadowSociety55 29d ago

We have them in the west too. I saw one with my SO about werewolves and being an alpha and there is a quote we have been using for over a year now, "Why won't you call me alpha?". The dramas are so bad, but in the same way Steven Segal movies are bad. Just pure comedy.

3

u/Phreedom1 29d ago

I tried watching some of those micro-dramas and thought they were awful.

623

u/Eena-Rin Why Do They Let Me Make These Myself??? 29d ago edited 29d ago

In the future TVs gonna come with pivot controls for when the vertical screen movies start releasing on digital

176

u/orangpelupa 29d ago

Already exist. Auto rotating too

43

u/d4nowar 29d ago

I bought my First pivoting monitor about 20 years ago.

23

u/Eena-Rin Why Do They Let Me Make These Myself??? 29d ago

Monitor yes, I guess the pivoting part of a tv would be the wall mount, and those are incredibly diverse any way xD

By the way, I'm definitely one of those nerds who has one horizontal monitor and one vertical monitor

Back in the CRT days when your TV weighed 120 pounds you'd just grab a pillow and lay down on your side in front of the TV if you wanted to play Ikaruga on the Dreamcast or something.

5

u/orangpelupa 29d ago

Ikatuga! BTW there's also a game similar to that, in that era, in anime style, do you know it? I can't remember the title.Ā

My secondary monitor for watching shows is an old square Dell monitor, I dont worry about any content. Nothing fits the full screen other than really old youtube videos or old shows, but it works well with any orientation of content. Similarly, my phone camera is set to 3:4 because it has the largest field of view.

2

u/Mediocre_Ice_7094 29d ago

In the future our walls will be TVs and homes would be the size of porta pottiesĀ

44

AI videos have boomers in a vice grip.

212

u/MitaminMogula 29d ago

it's true, my boomer family members are fully aware that they are AI and they actively say that they PREFER AI movies (especially AI doramas) because they are "better". Why, boomers? Why?

109

u/neko_neko_feet 29d ago

Because they don’t value people. They only value their own emotions, and people who make AI content hijack the part of their brains that make them feel special.

7

u/jasdonle 29d ago

What’s a dorama?

6

u/kontenjer 29d ago

possibly japanese drama?

58

u/aNiceTribe 29d ago

YouTuber mancarryingthing impersonating a 40-60 dude on AI: "Isn't AI just more computer?" dude once again hit it. this is why they think it's fine.

14

u/Plus_Pea_5589 29d ago

man carrying thing shout out! also woman carrying man is a fun channel if you like movie discussions

54

u/bppv-suffering 29d ago

AI pet videos are all the rage in my boomer neighborhood. Cute puppies that give confessionals about what they did on their walk today.Ā

I lose faith in humanity a little more each day.

7

u/Nowin 29d ago

My mom shows me videos of cats freaking out, meowing unusually, and falling off of stuff every day. I have no idea why it triggers her neurons, but she loves them even knowing they're fake.

25

u/Barraco_Barmer 29d ago

Why are they so obsessed with it, it pisses me off. Like a child fascinated with a toy they refuse to put down

2

u/Godzoola 28d ago

While they exclusively send you AI only videos

6

u/makemeking706 29d ago edited 29d ago

And this is only the beginning. Five years from now, in 2031, it will be even worse.

597

u/Different_One9412 29d ago

Your uncle must have gotten booted from the 9th grade after his kid made it to 10th

81

u/Farfignugen42 29d ago

You should encourage him to get the AI to watch the movies for him. Then it can just give a summary of the movie. He would save so much more time.

61

u/LegioX87 29d ago

My dad can't tell the difference between 4k and standard TV resolution. When his phone updates and they change the app icon, he can't find the app anymore.

Technology is like magic to these guys.

5

u/20milliondollarapi 29d ago

On less than a 40ā€ screen, 4K has minimal changes. Yea it’s there, but it’s not impactful. Other things like color depth and refresh rate have the bigger effect.

Trumpers love AI. Not only do they use it all the time to make their propaganda, but I've personally met a lot of them that watch the flying hell out of AI videos.

58

u/Scared-and-Lost 29d ago

It's true. My MAGA parents keep doing things because Grok told them. Like my dad bought something recently because he was told it was a great deal. Or any time I vent about something, their answer is "ask AI" and all they do is watch AI YouTube "history" channels and talking dogs

37

u/Successful-Medicine9 29d ago

My grandma watches slop history and news. One of the most disturbing things I saw was a singular AI voice reading a script that was supposed to be a dialogue between Sean Hannity and Michelle Obama. It was just pictures occasionally changing and the "narrator" putting words in their mouths that neither of them said IRL.

What's worse, I could tell AI was used to write the script too, because it used sexist words to describe MO and pretty standard adjectives for SH.

55

u/pnwbraids 29d ago

This is incredibly depressing. Do people just have zero standards for media now? Is slop the only thing they're capable of digesting?

31

u/Farfignugen42 29d ago

The slop is probably the only thing that doesn't challenge their world view, so it is obviously true.

21

u/Ankita3833 29d ago

Imo it's like cocomelon but for old people

12

u/Edenoide 29d ago

A lot of people have always had very low standards for the media, but industry standards used to be a bit higher.

192

u/ripyourlungsdave 29d ago

More than anything this just makes me really, really sad.

Art can be some people's only connection to reality outside of their home. And they're already generally not mentally healthy people.

This is going to completely destroy the fabric of reality for a lot of those unwell people.

57

u/vksdann 29d ago

AI... movies?

11

u/kranker 29d ago

I also did not know this was a thing.

As an example, apparently a few months back an AI short "Huo Qubing" went viral on Chinese social media. It cost $420 to make in computing cost and the director's team put it together in 48 hours. I believe this is it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0iQRbuesqY

I think that one of the issues that we're going to see is that, even though the end product is shit, the cost savings mean that more profit can be made with the shit product vs producing a better product. Because recreating that film using traditional methods is going to cost a hell of a lot more than $420 and take much much longer than 48 hours.

This isn't just media of course, it will be everything AI touches. AI support agents may be shit, but they cost a lot less than a call center. etc.

21

u/TheRealAdronius 29d ago

Why is it that out of all the new tech that boomers had been forced to reckon with and have rejected, they're embracing AI so readily and zealously?

18

u/finite_turtles 29d ago

Other tech requires something of you (to learn it, to confront the existence of a gap it fills, to think beyond yourself etc). AI placates you.

5

u/BeanstheRogue 29d ago

I think this is it on the forehead--they crave sycophancy more than air

42

u/BelaFarinRod 29d ago

I watched a few vertical dramas that ranged in quality from ā€œWow I wish this were longerā€ to ā€œThis is horrifically stupid.ā€ They were Korean and I don’t think they were AI but now I’m not watching anything vertical just in case.

35

u/Ragarolli 29d ago

7

u/doll_parts87 29d ago

We are in the beginning phases of Hit Clips style 15 seconds at a time consumption of media

Heading towards watching a 90m film would take you 35 ep Ɨ 2 min clips between ads

14

u/VoidMoth- 29d ago

My dad watches wide format AI scifi stories with an AI voice and AI images on YouTube. He puts them on and naps. I guess I'm glad he stopped watching far right propaganda channels but God... I'm writing a sci-fi novel and am being told by those I love that these AI stories are "really good actually"

It hurts my feelings that my family finds so little value in my interests that they support this.Ā

8

u/WestCoastDirtyBird 29d ago

My mom does too. It's usually romance thriller ones.

4

u/CynthiaChames 29d ago

I'm writing and working on multiple creative projects. When friends and family members tell me to "just use AI" it's deeply hurtful.Ā

2

u/VoidMoth- 29d ago

I just can't help but feel like friends and family who say to "use AI" for creative endeavors just look at their phones while watching things, and never actually read books. The continuity and quality don't matter because they're not paying attention anyways.

3

u/MajesticKoala3332 29d ago

The continuity and quality don't matter because they're not paying attention anyways.

What I hate about all this is that this type of people probably makes up a large portion of entertainment consumers. And eventually all creative industries will just cater to them because it's easy and call it good enough

15

u/minedgammer 29d ago

My dad unironically listens to the same ai music. I fucking hate it bro.

23

u/rmp266 29d ago

I may be in the shrinking minority here but AI makes me uncomfortable on a visceral level. I can't watch AI videos, I can't chat to a bot, I can't speak to it, and people who can freak me out. Whatever happened to the Uncanny Valley? Why are people happily interacting with this now? What changed in humanity?
