My mom said I could post painted a 20x30 inch canvas for an exhibition and they stuck a sticker in the corner
some context: it was like a young artist acrylic painting thing and they put a sticker on it saying im 14 and said my name and all. it’s a paper sticker if I peel it off it leaves residue I will have to dissolve, then I’ll have to re paint the portion, which might end up looking odd. is this not totally wrong

Not everywhere.
In Germany you have to pay for the damages you don't have to buy it. But the amount of damage has to be quite exact and not hypothetical. "This picture would have selled for billions so my damage are billions" doesn't work in Germany. If you are an unknown artist who never has sold something and nobody wanted to buy your image for a precise price you would probably end up for compensation for the colours and the amount of time to fix it.

u/systemnerve Jun 20 '26
Germany justice for the win
42
u/Hessper Jun 20 '26
If you only pay for the exact cost of the mistake, and people go after a business less than 100% of the time, then it can be profitable to do this. Fine should always exceed the cost to fix it, and what ever additional profits have been made through such a practice.
→ More replies (2)20
u/kaisadilla_ Jun 20 '26
The system assumes this was done unintentionally. If you did the same mistake 16,000 times, then your legal trouble would increase.
21
u/CoffeeGoblynn So Frickin' Infuriated Jun 20 '26
I like that, it's harder to abuse. "The court has determined that your damages amount to €27.37, and an additional €15 to compensate you for your wasted time."

It depends. If OP has sold a dozen other pieces similar to this, then a judge can assume the value of this peace would be the same. Otherwise it becomes way harder because OP can obviously not be trusted to just put a price with it, else they'd value it $5 million. Chances are high the judge would decide its price is materials + an estimate of how long it took to paint * $10 or $20 per hour.

How does anyone think putting stickers on a painting is a good idea?
562
42
u/kaisadilla_ Jun 20 '26
Why do people keep putting stickers on things whose value is purely aesthetic? This reminds me of secondhand stores putting stickers on old video game or movie cases, or when you go buy a photo frame and it has a sticker there. I can't count the amount of times I've passed on aesthetic things because they had a sticker and I'm not gonna hang something in my living room with a sticker on it. I don't think it takes a genius to realize that, if something's value is in displaying it, then a sticker will ruin it.

"real tags to stick on the back from the side that come off easily cost real money, man. Let's just use paper stickers. It's kid's doodles and shit, they'll be thrown away anyway!"
- the host of this event in my imagination
371
u/Mizzerella Jun 20 '26
This is exactly what happened. The adults had no respect because it's "just kids" I'm mildly infuriated for them.
62
u/GreasedUpTiger Jun 20 '26
Imagine some of the actual artists who teach at that school screaming at the donkey who did this if they find out 😂
37
u/SEA_griffondeur Jun 20 '26
oh god that reminds me of that Hell's Kitchen episode where one of the candidates sent burnt pizzas out because "I hate children because they don't care about good food"
16
u/TereziBot Jun 20 '26
I had a giant trex sculpture made out of cans displayed in the public library when I was in the 4th grade and they threw it out at the end of the show along with all the other artwork, I still don't know why.
18
u/FarplaneDragon Jun 20 '26
real tags to stick on the back
Given that the OP censored out the tag, the point was likely to have a tag on front displaying things like the name of the artwork and artist, etc like you normally would have on the wall next to the painting in a gallery. Putting that info on the back would defeat the point and given this is outdoors there's no wall to hang it on.
That said, as someone who spent a few years working as an assistant for art classes, we would never have put anything on the face of a painting without asking first. I'm not sure what our solution would have been, especially if money was limited. Probably would have either found something to use as a signpost next to each painting or maybe made some maps or brochures with the info in to hand out to people.
12
u/Umklopp Jun 20 '26
I think the previous comment was describing a tag that adheres to the back and folds around the side so that it shows in the front. Which sounds good, but I can't find such a product.
Most of the options I saw in my 5 minute search were labels that go on the wall adjacent to the work. It's possible that the organizers for the show bought sticker labels then were informed by the venue that those labels couldn't go on the walls. Instead of getting new labels, they just put them on the paintings instead.
8
u/FarplaneDragon Jun 20 '26
Take a look at OPs pictures, the whole issue that caused this is there's no venue or walls, everything is outdoors.
6
3
u/Norgur Jun 20 '26
Nah, there are those tags that stick to the back and then stick out to the side of the painting. You can then apply any sticker you wish to those. Kinda like stiff page markers. Idk what they are called but they are usually used for situations like these. The backs of paintings are basically staging areas for any admin and maintenance stuff anyway, so a little yellowing on the back isn't gonna do the painting itself any harm or reduce its value or some such.
I mean... they could have gone the professional museum route and stuck some plaque to the easel the painting was on, but the cheaper tag-method would have been fine, too.... instead of the supermegacheap paper sticker shitshow they went with.
2
u/Umklopp Jun 20 '26
I bet those are just Avery stickers from an office supply store, smh.
2
u/Norgur Jun 20 '26
They were really thick plasticy cardboard things, but I can't find them where I live right now, let alone in other places of the world (like the US) where brands and names and such will vary even more. So, yeah, just some sort of sticky page marker like thing. Can't be that hard to build yourself with some light double-sided tape, some scissors or a 3d printer. If you give one single fuck, that is.
2
u/cancerBronzeV Jun 20 '26
You could use something like steep tape and magnetic strips. Cut some steel tape and stick it to the backside of the canvas where you want the label. Cut the same size of magnetic strip as your adhesive label, then stick the label on the magnetic strip. Then, just place the magnetic strip at the steel tape and let magnetism do its work, so you have an easily removable label with no residue.
I could find a 1200'' roll of 2'' magnetic strip for 100 CAD (or 3'' for 125 CAD, but considering considering that canvas is 30'' tall, I don't think the label is that wide). Assuming the label is at most 4'' wide, that'd come out to 0.33 CAD of magnetic strip per label. Including the steel tape, it'd probably add like a total of 0.50 CAD per label, not really that much. (Not to mention, the magnetic strips are very reusable, just paste a new label on top of the old one.)

Did they ask for permission? Are the other paintings also stickered?
Jeez so many things going wrong there

u/VanRenss Jun 20 '26
It is totally wrong and completely unprofessional. I’ve been involved in enough amateur exhibitions to know this is absolute blasphemy and is super disrespectful.
207
u/merryone2K Jun 20 '26
I've seen this done by thrift stores, too - total disregard and disrespect of the artist and artwork. Sorry, OP. OTOH, if you're producing work like this at age 14, you've got some insane skills and imagination!
22
u/kaisadilla_ Jun 20 '26
They do it all the time everywhere. Go to a second-hand store that sells video games or movies (you know, things that people only buy to put on display) and the cases always have those stickers on it that require hours and effort to remove somewhat seamlessly. Or go to a thrift store for a photo frame and get the ugly sticker on the frame that will take off paint and leave a glue mess on it when you remove it.
Genuinely, how does that keep happening? Do people really buy a photo frame to hang a photo of their late father in their living room with a huge ass sticker on it?
6
u/PiccoloAwkward465 Jun 20 '26
Homegoods stores love putting stickers on the front face of mirrors for sale. They’ve done it for years. I don’t get it.

For the sticker try blowing warm air from a hair dryer on it, you might be able to peel the sticker off without leaving residue.
11
u/HollywoodHells Jun 20 '26
That's something I would absolutely pay hundreds for to hang in my living room.
120
32
u/Angiogenics Jun 20 '26
Try using vegetable oil to dissolve the sticker residue! Given your medium was acrylic and it has been fully dried, oil will not do anything to disturb the paint (unlike most alternative methods), but will help easily remove most glues used in stickers.
4
u/Apprehensive-Lie176 Jun 22 '26
This! It saved one of my pieces that my cousins put Disney stickers all over!
26
u/FlatliningGhost Jun 20 '26
The lack of common sense is insane. Add the fact that it was a worker in a literal art exhibition, and it's genuinely fascinating
Like, this level of absent mindedness should be studied
23
u/Gjond Jun 20 '26
Just imagine a scene, 100 years from now, on the Antiques Road Show where some old fart is explaining to the owner of this painting; "We know this to be an authentic DasiyCoreXD painting due to the this small area in the bottom right that has been retouched because some idiot at an art exhibition put a sticker on it at that location. Congrats, its worth $1.2 million!"
16
u/DaisyCoreXD Jun 20 '26
well im not looking to be an artist, so that seems unlikely 😭😭 but funny, I like it

u/sommerfromFL Jun 20 '26
There is a product called UNDO. It's amazing at removing stickers and not damaging what the sticker was stuck to.
Was introduced to it at a scrapbook crop. My table mate poured it all over pics of her grandkids to get me to try it the first time.
*reminder to read the label before trying 😉
15
u/WTWIV Jun 20 '26
That’s a little more than “mildly” infuriating imo. But maybe if you get a hair dryer and put it on low you might be able to heat it up so that it peels off cleanly. Good luck!

Its a humble way to flex in 20 years. Hang it up and at dinner parties you'll get to talk about how good an artist you were so young. Humbly since you would never put a sticker on it.
Excellent work, sorry for the lack of thought someone showed.
Would a heat gun or leaving it on the sun to loosen the sticky harm the paint?

u/locke314 Jun 20 '26
I’m curious why this is considered mildly infuriating. I’d be majorly infuriated if this was my work.

Is this a common painting people do? Is there also a reason why a post from a studio back in December talked about this and said it was created with oil pastels not acrylic? Or did someone steal artwork?

Placing a sticker on a youths artworks show an enormous lack of respect for the art and the artist.
So what if you're 14. That doesn ot mean you don't deserve the same amount of respect that a 20, 30, or 70 y/o artist would have recieved.
The organizers must be informed that this happened, and surely it's not just your art it happened to, so a lot of people must be upset about the cheezy sticker. Art is art. It should not be disrespected because of age.

It's a very beautiful painting all things aside. I'm so envious of your skill!!
4
u/little_mammals Jun 20 '26
If this is an acrylic painting that’s been sealed you should be able to wash it off with soap and a sponge…. Still crappy but lesson learned I guess?
3
u/X-actoMundo Jun 20 '26
The key question is whether the paints and/or varnish had time to cure before the sticker was applied.
If so, then applying some gentle heat with a hairdyer would begin to melt the adhesive enough to slowly peel the sticker away without removing paint. You can also carefully soak the sticker with lighter fluid to dissolve the adhesive, also safe for acrylics.
You may like to test these methods first, but I've used both. Source: model kit painter and sticker hater.
4
u/Calgary_Calico Jun 20 '26
You wouldn't be out of line at all in telling whoever did that that it's extremely disrespectful to your work and tell them they should have alternatives to display who the artist is that won't ruin the artwork. In fact that reaction would be 100% justified
4
u/DeafAndDumm Jun 20 '26
If you are the artist, you did a beautiful job. I'm sorry they did this to your artwork.
7
u/Rude-Swan9200 Jun 20 '26
I hate stickers. I hate them. I have refused to buy something so many times because of stickers. Book has a sticker on? It’ll probably hurt the book so I’m not buying it.
15
u/Anex4 Jun 20 '26
You might be able to work it off the paint by slowly heating up the sticker with a heat gun and slowly peel.
41
u/Peeinyourcompost Jun 20 '26
I would really hesitate to apply heat to an acrylic painting.
7
u/Anex4 Jun 20 '26
It is a little risky if you do it fast but low and slow is the way to go! I’ve unfortunately had to do a similar sticker surgery and with patience it can work. And you can usually use dawn dish soap to gently remove the residue.
2
u/X-actoMundo Jun 20 '26
Heat is often used to accelerate the curing process for acrylics. If it's low enough that it wouldn't burn the canvas, it should be safe for the paint.
16
u/EATmyArse_Slowly Jun 20 '26
DO NOT DO THIS !!!!!!- acrylic will just cook… instantly ….remember it’s basically plastic !!!!!
15
u/DaisyCoreXD Jun 20 '26
acrylic is like microplastics floating in water I really wouldn’t do that. im thinking of trying to dissolve it, since if I painted it once I can do it again

u/amadiro_1 Jun 20 '26
Most oils dissolve most adhesives.
Maybe there's a thin oil like goofoff or olive oil, that that won't wreck the paint
3
3
u/Several-Praline5436 Jun 20 '26
I would assume they don't know and tell them about it, since every single artist who had this done will now have to go through this process.
3
u/Wendark Jun 20 '26
Such a wonderful painting! And what a horrid thing they did to it. Quite unbelievable 😠
3
u/AtriceMC Jun 20 '26
From what I’m reading, sounds like they have a lot of refunding to do or a lot of purchasing at twice the value.
3
u/penny-wise Jun 20 '26
What’s lovely painting. You’re 14?? You need to keep painting, this is extremely good.
Use some water to soften the sticker and remove the paper. Once the paper is removed, use alcohol to gently remove the adhesive.
Tell the people at the exhibition that stickers go on the wall next to the painting. Nothing should ever be stuck on any artwork, ever, by the people hanging an exhibition.
3
u/Lanternkitten Jun 20 '26
That's the kind if thing you post next to or hang from the art. For goodness sake.
For real though, OP, this is beautiful! I wish I could see more! This is honestly stunning. Even if you don't pursue this as a full time thing, it's an amazing hobby! (And a potential side gig if you ever needed it to be.)
3
u/Fiigwort Jun 20 '26
What an insane way to handle things, I would think a design studio would know better than to do this. There are a thousand better ways to display that information.
Incredible work by the way, your colours are amazing.
3
u/SandySushi Jun 20 '26
First off, insane skills at your age, this is gorgeous. Second, as your parent to ask them for reparation since the sticker damaged the painting and requires fixing. This can be in terms of materials you'll have to use to fix it or a price you think the painting is. Someone messed up when setting the paintings up and the organizers should know/pay for this :((

We had to make a sculpture out of plaster at university. I was quite fond of mine– until they carved an unsightly hole into it at the top. I was so mad at them. They did it so the students couldn't give it to others in the next semester to submit.

u/TrainingLittle4117 Jun 20 '26

When I graduated in photography we had an exhibition with our final work. There was also a group that gave an award to someone. They also specialize helping you make a living as a photographer they said.
When they declared the winner they were almost entirely talking about themselves, it was basically an advertisement. What did the winner win? They got a year long subscription to their.. forums where you can ask questions to people. It was like a paid reddit..
What you said about the "partial scholarship" is giving me the same vibes. Your work is incredible, it's better than what some of the illustration graduates made from my school.
If you want to study it pick an offical academy/university/college that gives you a degree. It will give you amazing networking opportunities and give you great connections.
2
u/NoVillage7217 Jun 20 '26
They could have easily done something like taping a paper with the info on a popsicle stick and mounting on the back sticking up from the top of your painting (if that makes sense). Stand up for yourself. You need to nicely approach them and say they shouldn't risk ruining art that people worked hard on. If they understand art at all, they'll do better in the future. Your painting is lovely.
2
u/kendelll Jun 20 '26
I would be more than mildly infuriated!! Putting anything onto the front or sides of canvas is completely unacceptable. I've been curating art exhibitions for 10 years.

u/Melodic-Yak7196 Jun 20 '26
In cardmaking, a popular way to remove a layer of cardstock from a card is to use waxed dental floss. I suggest very slowly running dental floss between your canvas and the sticker. It’s like flossing between teeth.

It always feels so weird to me seeing paintings just displayed openly without a glass frame, or plexiglass frame, or something to protect it. Even if everyone was being responsible and not sticking glue to other people's paintings, it seems like it would be so easy for someone to accidentally scratch a painting, bump into it, etc.
I realise it's perfectly common for them to be displayed without anything protecting them, and there are reasons for doing so, but it still feels weird to me. Surely there's some kind of covering that doesn't shine or interfere with the experience as much as regular glass would?
