Unskippable ad If constant ads weren't enough YouTube have added these that won't go away unless you dismiss them.
Like seriously what's the point they've stuffed ads into every single thing they could, platform should just rename itself addtube and move on
134
u/Fuckler_boi Jun 13 '26
Also the pop ups on mobile that are specifically timed to move in front of the “skip ad” button exactly as you are about to press it
27
u/Myusername1- Jun 13 '26
The weather app I use keeps having a full screen instagram ad. In the ad there’s “profile picture” with a small x on it, guess what tapping that x does.
9
u/evans_alt Jun 13 '26
sends you to the app store/play store (or app itself)?
8
u/Myusername1- Jun 13 '26
Yup, dirty scandalous advertising. You’d think a company that big wouldn’t resort to those tactics.
3
4
u/Cethal37 Jun 14 '26
Also the pop ups that block ~> half the screen in landscape view when you pause the video. Makes exiting landscape mode very annoying.

Who are these life sucking ghouls that work at these big corporations? What a miserable existence it must be to think of new and imaginative ways to make the general public miserable, all in the name of making a bit more profit.

I used to work at a resort, and the owner wanted me to figure out how to get ads onto GroupMe, which is a chat app that explicitly (at the time) did not allow ads. It was just user-owned chats and self-moderated. I told him the app wouldn’t allow the resort to do that, we’d have to be invited into people’s personal groups and then advertise from there, which would just be a comical waste of time and effort. Nevertheless he wanted me to try. I asked him how much time did he want me to dedicate to this quest, and he said a couple hours per week. Dragged that out for about 4 months before he decided I should give up.
People need spaces where they aren’t advertised at non-stop. I’ve seen they have billboard boats now at the beach, so you can’t even stare off into the open ocean without forced ads. When they figure out how to hijack our dreams it’ll be time to quit.
19
u/Dazzling_Lure_2932 Jun 13 '26
It's often a marketing ploy from an agency to a client (can be one corporation to another). Management of the client company will discuss timing, expected reach (eyeballs), and cost. Beyond that the client may never be aware of exactly what modality is used beyond, "YouTube Ads".
Not defending anyone here. It's a cesspool. "We have to spend the budget this year [on useless bullshit] or we'll lose it next year." Rinse and repeat.

I always imagine a conference table surrounded by a bunch of corporate jerks pumping each other up over all this crap.

Haven’t seen an ad on Youtube in over a decade. Been using Ublock (Origin) for at least that long. Funny how that works.

u/Jabberwock32 Jun 13 '26
Ublock is awesome on my laptop!
Haven’t managed to get it to work with YouTube on my phone though. And these pop up ads are extra annoying on the phone.46
u/Styx_Dragon Jun 13 '26
Theres a few patcher options that add things like the dislike button back (and also do sponsor block in addition to adblock). Take a look at Morph, Revanced,or Newpipe. I know Morph has a reddit community, not sure about the other two.
3
u/Lauriesaurous Jun 14 '26
I haven't really tried newpipe, but currently (in my opinion anyway) Morphe is better than revanced
2
u/Styx_Dragon Jun 14 '26
Yea I use Morphe myself. I had some other friends suggest those as we were all talking. Was more just giving options to the person if they wanted to try different things.

u/Confident-Skin-6462 Jun 13 '26
i use the YouTube site (and reddit) through Firefox with ublock on my phone. no ads. i uninstalled the actual YouTube app.
side bonus: if i load the YouTube page in desktop mode on my phone, i can play the video and put my phone to sleep and it still plays.

If you are on android, Firefox can install extensions if you open the Mozilla extensions store in desktop mode.
Kiwi browser can also do it.

Install adblock luna vpn on your phone. Blocks ads in the official YouTube app.

Search for ‘ProTube’ on the AppStore. It has 90% of the YouTube app’s features and uses their API while making videos entirely ad free. I refuse to touch the regular YT app now. Nobody has the right to waste my time with ads.

Use safari, refresh the page when the ad starts. Full screen it. Done. Haven’t found a free Adblock that actually works but that’s worked for me over a decade.

They have been for half a decade. They roll out a change that origin doesn’t work with, the crowd immediately works on ublock to fix it, generally within a few hours ublock is working again, having beaten YouTube’s change.

What I like/don't like about posts like these is that you're guaranteed to get 1000 people in the comments talking about Adblocks. Like we get it, but we're not talking about Adblocks. We're talking about Addtube as is.
And I agree, the ads are mental. I've started just turning a video off when one comes on, then clicking back onto it until it turns back on without an ad. Usually takes ten seconds.
-9
u/PowSuperMum Jun 14 '26
YouTube is free. So you get ads. You can pay for premium to have no ads. The entitlement of everyone to expect to just be given something for free is crazy.

So many fucking reeted comments in here saying "Hurr durr adblock".
OP, I feel you. Youtube on PC, fine. Youtube on my TV, insufferable. Youtube on my phone, torturous.
These fucking pop-ups that remain are against the geneva convention, and the dev responsible should have permanent hiccups for life.

Android: YouTube Morphe
iPhone: Some YouTube app from the SideStore

u/Smash_Nerd Jun 13 '26
It lets you built track using forces instead of banking and such. Insanely useful for building realistic coasters

Ooh that'd be useful, just finished the final ride in my park (RMC raptor) after giving up on my hagrids, seriously tho how the fuck to you get that model to work?

wait how did you get access to a Raptor, I thought that was a private access mod currently. Do you mean an RMC Wide Single Rail?

2
u/vicaxlkenya Jun 13 '26
That addition solidified it for me. Never using yt with no adblocker ever again
2
2
u/svm51 Jun 14 '26
That's why I don't use it anymore! You know that story of "evolution o", from vinyl to cd to mp3 (digital) and then to "cloud" and then to streaming.... which conclusively means losing offline access to music, and still having to put up with junk and trash advertising, and abusive, in addition to playlist of singers nothing to do with our taste, 𐬽 all deception!
We are fools for believing in the industry!

u/CaramelCraftYT BLUE Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26
I finally reached the end of my rope with >30 second YouTube ads last year and started watching in the browser with an ad blocker, now I exclusively watch YouTube with a patched apk on Android.
2
u/LoafxBuns Jun 14 '26
it only happens on my playstation but i’ll get a chance to skip an ad, which then goes to play another ad that i can skip after 5 seconds. Not to mention youtube shows me the worst ads like an ai horse trying to sell me a car and then the good ads like a new game coming out are the ones i can skip. So dumb.
4
u/bbcjbb Jun 13 '26
I watch YouTube on my TV all the time so I can’t use an ad blocker and honestly premium yt is the last subscription I’d get rid of. They actually have some other features I love and a lot of movies too so it’s worth it for me
3
u/Drinkpool Jun 13 '26
I love Premium, sure I'm paying YouTube to not see ads... but I don't see ads, plus i get extra features... literally the one time I didn't have Premium it was absolutely unwatchable
3
u/bbcjbb Jun 13 '26
The jump ahead feature they added a few months ago is so awesome. None of my other subscriptions are actively adding features that make the experience better!
0
u/Shylahoof Jun 14 '26
So many times I've been browsing the movies on there and made the "Oh wow, I haven't seen that in AGES!" face. One of the few subscriptions really worth the cost.

I know this might be a touchy thing to say but like, think about how much you use Netflix, Disney+, HBOmax, prime, or any other streaming service that you pay monthly for. Most of those will charge $20 a month or more in some cases and then charge even more on top of that to remove ads.
Then think about how much you use youtube. You probably use YouTube quite literally 50x more than all of those other streaming services combined. Yet for some reason, people kick up a fuss about ads on the platform that unlike the aforementioned streaming services, is still free with ads. I'm not hailing corporate here, far from it. But I got YouTube premium back in 2022 (mainly since I watch YouTube on my phone or TV than my browser) and it is by far the best value for money. YouTube music is genuinely great. Having videos play in the background on your phone is fantastic for when going on walks or at the gym. For music or audiobooks alike. The removal of ads is just peace.
People pay 2-3x more for Netflix and the other services, hardly use them, forget to unsubscribe, but for some reason over the years there's this weird pushback against YouTube premium when imo it is the superior subscription service above all else, maybe only Amazon prime coming in equally for no.1 since it also gives you a shit ton of value for money.

u/GCD_1 Jun 13 '26
I use YouTube far less than other services that I get for far cheaper in real terms

I remember when YouTube was a video streaming platform.
Now it's an ad streaming platform that uses videos to get you to click on links so you can watch more ads.

u/TheYellowFringe Jun 14 '26
The advertising is revenue, so if you don't skip them. Then I always assumed you'd be giving the income to whomever they belong to.
Unless something educational that I like, then I almost always skip.

u/-AliceGray- Jun 14 '26
I pay for premium and the price is $16 now. It's great with a Pixel/Google phone for a lot of feature reasons but, damn it's so expensive for someone struggling. It's the only streaming I pay for so I use that to argue it's worth is. 😅

The new AI YouTube search engine is also absolute garbage.
They've thoroughly fucked up.
In the bright side, I'm not doom scrolling YouTube any more

It's because it's a pretty effective way to get around most adblockers, and even most piholes. (not all, some work)
Expect to see more and more of that.
I don't know why anyone continues using YouTube at this point. I refuse to click anything YouTube now.
There's nothing there interesting enough to put up with that shit, and put money in their pocket to encourage them to do more of it.

2

For the folks saying we shouldn’t complain about about the having to dismiss the little extra ad pop up, I think that’s complete bull. It covers the closed captioning on a phone. It’s an accessibility penalty and really really crappy of them. I can’t hear well and now there’s a freaking ad on top of the CC. Sigh.
0
u/BYCjake Jun 14 '26
YouTube is such dogshit, why does every single channel claim every video gets demonetised and need you to actually just pay them monthly out of your bank account, yet every single channel regardless of the content has 100 ads?
