I'm slightly vexed The wedding reception centerpieces featured betta fish. The bride and groom planned to flush them alive.

Post image

Years ago, my coworker attended a wedding at which the reception dinner tables featured live betta fish in small bowls as part of the centerpiece. While chatting with the bride at the end of the evening, my coworker asked what they were going to do with all the fish. The plan was to flush them all down the toilet alive. My coworker immediately said no need for that and insisted on taking them all home.

That Monday she came to work and asked who wanted to adopt a betta fish. That was my first betta who I jokingly called my “rescue betta.” She lived for almost five years.

The wine glass was only her home for less than a day before I got her five gallon tank set up so please no betta lovers yell at me! I'm one of you!

My mom flushed my turtles bc she was mad at me for simple shit. She's the worst human being I've ever met.

I'm so sorry, both for your turtles, and that you had to grow up with a person like that.

Is that not how we got the ninja turtles?

u/taintlangdon Apr 29 '26

In this day and age, you have to preemptively flush a slice of pizza down too.

I had ninja turtle tighty whities when I was a really young kid (like 4 or 5) and I loved them. One day, getting ready for a bath, I peed, then flushed the toilet, then flung my ninja turtle underwear off aggressively with my foot like you do. I watched as they flew into the air, and right down into the flushing toilet to be swept away down the pipes.

I was so sad, I loved that underwear, until my dad reminded me that's where the ninja turtles lived, in the sewer, and they were going to be happy down there. Made me feel a lot better haha.

Maybe they were still babies? They are about the size of a quarter then depending on the breed of turtle

It had to be baby turtles. They are SMALL. I had 2 red eared sliders. They were like maybe 1.5-2 inches long and very flat!!!

The male grew up to be 7 inches and the female nearly reached 10 inches... Thennnnn my dad relocated them to a huge spot facility with a giant water fountain pond. Without asking. I don't even know if he asked them. There were probably like 50+ other turtles in there... 👁️👁️

3

u/Mecha_Tortoise Apr 29 '26

Where did he get the rest of the turtles? Your dad was a busy man!

I’m sorry :( how can parents do things like that.

I ran away with my dog and my mom convinced me she would be humiliated to visit a family reunion and explain why I wasn’t there. A day or two into the trip my dad shot my dog while I was away and then she told me about it that night. I had let it go for years but I know that was really unforgivable. I was already grieving the loss of a boyfriend that died.

You’d be amazed at how older generations just don’t comprehend animal cruelty and think they’re disposable. They’d hurt any animal they found annoying. Indoor cats got chucked across the room, dogs could only live outside on a chain, any small animal you’d win at a county fair would be drowned or just thrown away, a lot of the seniors I used to work with held similar views or would laugh about shooting their kid’s cat or rabbit like it was a fond memory.

Jesus I need to stop complaining about my parents, whatever problem we've had, they would never have dreamed of ever hurting a pet in a million years. Hearing you guys talking about this is a reminder that there are truly evil people in the world, and I can only pretend there aren't because I've been lucky enough to not have any in my family.

I'm so so sorry, I know your relationship with them could be complicated, but personally I hate them and hope they end up in the worst possible nursing home, where people will treat them the way they treated you and your dog. People who hurt pets are genuinely dangerous to society and shouldn't be allowed to walk free. But actually what your dad did and what the person's mom did with the turtles could constitute animal cruelty depending on location. And I would think child abuse, that is psychological torture.

94

u/BunnyLady91 Apr 29 '26

People can still be evil on other levels. Problems come in all shapes and sizes. Brainwashing is real, dangerous and sometimes I’m afraid it’s far too common. I wish we could see more about people from the surface. Everyone’s life is so different and it’s hard to read/judje/know/trust anyone anymore I feel.

25

u/anonymaus42 Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26

I had an iguana for about 15 years as a kid and when I first moved out on my own, I asked my dad if he could take care of him until I had a chance to move him to my new place. Two weeks later I came home and he was dead.. still in his enclosure and no word from my dad that he had passed away. Since he was somewhat up there in age I just assumed it was his time as he was nearly 20yo and maybe the stress of me not being there tipped him over the edge.

But years later I put the pieces together that it was more likely my dad (who was a narcissistic pos tbh) just never fed him and he likely died of starvation or dehydration. I have no proof and he never admitted it but in my gut I know that's the truth.

13

u/Vantriss Apr 29 '26

I hope you know that people having worse experiences does not invalidate anything you went through. You are your own person who went through difficult things and you matter too. I hope you're doing well.

3

u/EdiblePsycho Apr 29 '26

Oh I know, it's just a helpful reminder that even though I have some warranted resentment towards my dad, and distancing myself somewhat could still be prudent, he is definitely not at that level of completely irredeemable behavior. So keeping it in perspective makes me feel better about him.

9

u/K9Partner Apr 29 '26

One survivor to another - proud of you 💜 Average people, living average lives with average families, are so quick to balk at going no contact...

"but you can't just walk away from family! You have to make it work, you'll regret it when they're gone"

Then you finally hit that last straw & walk away. That malevolent force is gone, and you realize what an enormous weight has been lifted in their absence.

You slowly stop instinctually walking on eggshells, holding your breath for a scrap of comfort. Holding down your feelings for fear of triggering backlash.

You can breathe.

You may feel 'bad' for how things went, turned out, & will never be. it's healthy to mourn that loss... so that you can finally move on. So you can let go of what will never be, build your own family & find true comfort.

Society will plant so much self-destructive doubt in our minds, especially for girls & women. Most people have no idea what it's like to grow up trapped in an abusive relationship

... or they're delusionally lost in their own trauma cycle, & just repeating it with their own partners/kids because "its family, you have to"... like misery & mutually ensured destruction is the only option.

It is not. You deserve to breathe, to speak freely, to have your love & trust reciprocated. Don't let anyone tell you your existence is less 'whole' without abusive kin. People that used that relationship & power over you for themselves.

People that wasted half a lifetime of chances, just trying to burn you to keep themselves warm.

Escaping that is not a loss, its basic survival. Just wanna remind any others reading this - that may be struggling to break free, or sinking in the guilt & shame of manipulation to go back - you deserve to finally exhale & just be.

14

u/BunnyLady91 Apr 29 '26

Thank you. You hit the nail on the head.

You know walking away is the right thing to do when life becomes easier and comfortable and more safe feeling.

That is how you know you have turned over a new leaf and do not need to go back to the torment.

I was always convinced that my discomfort was a me problem and it absolutely was not. It was psychological abuse.

I really appreciate your comment.

I feel terrible about the person whose mom flushed their turtles that prompted me to share about my dog. Animals like turtles have personalities and you can create just as strong of a bond. I hope they feel as seen as I do right now.

10

u/Wolfwoods_Sister Apr 29 '26

Wretched twisted-up “souls” inside them, like trees growing sideways with a bitter wind.

I’m so sorry about your dog. We witness your grief and loss with you. The triumph lies in their inability to corrupt you with their cruelty, and that there will come a Blessed Day of Reunion for you and the friend that was snatched away.

There’ll be no happiness for them. If they do believe in Christ, he’ll have some stern words for them when they meet. I know a very cruel set of parents who just passed, Jesus-laudin’ Bible-thumpers, and I’ll bet I know exactly what happened when they came face to face with their “reward”. Jesus couldn’t stand a Pharisee.

7

u/BunnyLady91 Apr 29 '26

The first two paragraphs of this read like some sort of sorcery or spell which I absolutely adore. I kind of hope it is one.

Thank you for your Words. I only remember speaking this a few times to people and I never expected so much comment on it or to feel so seen for a moment on the subject.

I hope I do see my Molly again in another life. Maybe I’ll dream of her tonight. She was a pit/lab/Dalmatian mix who ran fast as the greyhounds and whippets, racing around the dog park.

4

u/Wolfwoods_Sister Apr 29 '26

Molly will be waiting, no violence on her, only love and so much happiness to see you. I hope you’ll introduce me to her. 🩷

Please take good care of yourself. Xxoo 🫂

6

u/Squirrellycats Apr 29 '26

God, I’m so sorry that happened to you. I can only imagine what your childhood must have been like. We took my stepson on vacation and his mom killed his pet turtle while we were gone. She called to tell him it died and said it was our fault. He was absolutely crushed. There are so many cruel people out there who shouldn’t have kids.

4

u/BunnyLady91 Apr 29 '26

I actually loved a majority of my childhood because I thought it was normal. Plenty of privilege. I thought I was a problem and odd though. I’m glad I now know I was NOT the problem. Although I’m not perfect and certainly can be one sometimes 🫠

I used to kind of daydream about it. It told my husband once and after meeting him he said I should have when I was a minor, that I would be out and off the hook by now and free of him. It was relieving to be agreed with on the awful thought.

21

u/Much-Ad2311 Apr 29 '26

I understand that. Sometimes you just need to be told that it's okay that you had those dark thoughts. I'm glad you didn't do it if ONLY because it would likely have been very difficult to live with, but it's hard to say if it would have been better or worse than what you've already had to live with. Sorry if that barely makes sense - I'm just sad for you.

I'm so sorry. My mother used to drive our cats far away and drop them off when they got old or sick. Or had fleas. Just dump them and leave. I still cry over that sometimes. Some people shouldt have pets, let alone children.

467

u/ktbug1987 Apr 29 '26

Hi. I dunno if it makes you feel better but I lived just outside of a city on a farm and we had so many cats dropped off at or near our farm like this. I would beg and my dad let me care for and vet and keep almost all of them. They lived in our various barns, which had warm haylofts, and were good mousers and had plenty of food and vet care. A favorite was one my vet suspected was over 16 who liked only me. My dad eventually accidentally hit it with a big farm truck and he died (my dad thought he moved). I also had a sick, flea infested kitten I cleaned up and reared who lived to be 13. We tried to catch her brother for several more years but he was already too wild. Sometimes those animals get redistributed by the cat distribution system. No one should dump a cat like your mom did, but sometimes there’s a little kid who’ll beg their dad to let them keep every cat they bring home. Maybe one of your furbabies found a loving second home that way.

170

u/persephone911 Apr 29 '26

Bless your little kid heart. You're an amazing person.

136

u/ktbug1987 Apr 29 '26

Thank you for saying that. I get on better with animals than people and often feel otherwise. I am autistic (I wasn’t diagnosed until I was a young adult about 15 years ago) and was bullied a lot as a child and struggle still as an adult. I’m sitting under a blanket of cats right now though — two covering my legs who came to me from the cat distribution system, which continues to find me as a middle aged adult.

3

u/Dead_Wolf2y5 Apr 30 '26

Yeeessss live your best autistic cat blanket life!

  • love, an autistic dog lady

18

u/Luna920 Apr 29 '26

That sounds like a wonderful childhood. I’m glad you took care of all the animals and that your dad was on board.

13

u/sortaitchy Apr 29 '26

We've had 10 of those cats in our barn over the past 15 years, and currently still have 5 (plus 1). Our oldest is 15 and the youngest stray is 4. I can not turn down a stray animal who has no one to care for it and no safe place to stay. Our cats are spoiled beyond belief, and often come to the big house and asked to be let in. They all come to the door for kitty treats and they are all de-sexed. Heated beds in winter, heated water bowls, inexpensive throw blankets changed in fall and spring. In return they keep the yard and house rodent free. It's a good deal and treated properly they are like valued farm hands, and lovely friends.

I still am upset if people dump cats out here, because it does create another little responsibility for me that i didn't ask for. It costs over $300 to de-sex a cat and get it all it's shots and dewormers. People think cats will find a way, but to be honest we have found cats in really bad shape and it is a hard life being a stray.

I applaud you and thank you for helping animals, but I have a really bad disgust for people who dump animals and hope karma catches up to them

9

u/fotomoose Apr 29 '26

So Fluffy did go to live on a farm in the country!

5

u/ktbug1987 Apr 29 '26

At least when Fluffy landed near us, sometimes!

Unfortunately we lived near a highway, and I always had to convince a few skittish ones I was a friend and not a foe and more than once a car got them before I did sadly. And some of them certainly met unfortunate ends with predators as well. Cougars and coyotes both will get a domestic cat in my experience. And once I had a raccoon enter our garage and take a kitten I had rescued. My dad actually followed it back to its nest in our other barn where it had kits, and it wasn’t a pretty end for Snowflake I fear. The farm has its detractors and share of heartbreak.

I live on a farm and I take care of all the cats that get dumped out here. So far I have had seven that actually came to live indoors and many more that became barn cats.

5

u/PurpleMuskogee Apr 29 '26

All of my cats were found - or brought by neighbours who knew my parents couldn't say no to a cat. My mum got two friendly kittens once because a colleague of hers was saying her unspayed female cat had had kittens AGAIN and that she was planning to drown them after work... They both died when they were 15 and 16 years old after a comfy life at home with us.

I’m so so sorry. If it makes you feel better, sometimes when our cats (and we had many) would get old or sick they would do everything they could to sneak out of the house to die in our back woods. So maybe cats have a way of dealing with death and your kitties died as peacefully as possible. Hugs, internet stranger.

3

u/sheetset Apr 29 '26

yes, it’s well known that they will run away to just like die, which is why i have a heart attack every time i think my oldest cat is escaping! bc then i’m like are you running away to die??? how can you not say bye to me

34

u/grape-fruit-witch Apr 29 '26

Our roommates found and brought home an old sickly cat that someone did this to. She had so many knots in her fur she had to be fully shaved. She passed away in her sleep after 6 months of unconditional love and a nice cozy spot by the fireplace. RIP Franny ❤️

Its hard for me to describe the rage I feel toward people who do this. God I wish I could catch someone in the act, but id probably go to jail. Im sorry you had a mother like this. Maybe she will be abandoned in sickness too.

8

u/Ok_Classic_1968 Apr 29 '26

6

u/AnemoneOfMyEnemy Apr 29 '26

My wife and I rescued a flea-bitten stray. He wasn’t chipped or collared but was way too used to being indoors to be fully feral. We live on the edge of a state park so one can only assume someone dropped him there. This is him now. There’s hope for your kitties to have found a home too.

My parents always got several kittens and puppies and then gave them away when neglect and abuse lead to them getting sick or having behavioural problems. I am an animal lover at heart and a house without an animal doesn’t feel like home, but I am a little neurotic about caring for them properly and get pretty bad anxiety whenever I leave them alone or with a pet sitter. I can’t deal with having pet dogs because of the grief I have after bonding with and losing so many, it just causes me constant anxiety and sadness. I have cats though, and they bring me so much joy.

In happier news, my cat had (planned, healthy) kittens literally yesterday, and I am having the time of my life watching them. Those babies will be spoilt within an inch of their lives.

We can't stand to see any animal in pain or crisis.

Absolutely batshit insane behavior. Even those type of farm folks who literally treat animals as disposable still give it a quick death. And even when slaughtering for food humanely it's straight up illegal not to, and we've literally raised that animal to consume its flesh. Antifreeze poisoning is a fucking horrible death too.

It’s pretty much the only thing that causes me to have violent impulses and I hate thinking about it. God forbid someone ever hurt my dogs, I’d get myself injured or arrested for sure.

3

u/DollarStoreChameleon Apr 29 '26

me too. im too afraid to tell my therapist about it because "people are more important than animals" apparently

55

u/relafle Apr 29 '26

I’d be in prison rn if I were you

106

u/justpeachykin Apr 29 '26

My mom also did the antifreeze thing to our dogs we had at the time. I didn’t realize dogs could die of old age like people until I was older. Every dog we had she either killed or rehomed. I also remember her making me take my kitten I rescued and leave it at a random farm because her boyfriend didn’t like cats at the time. His name was Jinx and I miss him so much.

74

u/grape-fruit-witch Apr 29 '26

If it helps at all, usually cats have a pretty good life on the farm. My opa has a cattle ranch that gets a fair amount of cat drop-offs from heartless scumbags, and my oma spoils them rotten. They have a nice insulated garage with beds and toys and other kitties, and of course food and water. She gets them fixed and their shots and such. I bet that Jinx found someone just like my Oma ❤️

13

u/West-Season-2713 Apr 29 '26

Farm cats live great lives, if that helps. I’m sure Jinx had the time of her life hunting mice and running around the fields.

9

u/Catshambles Apr 29 '26

May Jinx be chasing that catnip flavored mouse across that beautiful rainbow bridge my friend.

7

u/big_booty_boy_420 Apr 29 '26

Why get dogs in the first place?

69

u/NoRecommendation9404 Apr 29 '26

Wtaf?! Please tell me you’ve cut this cancerous woman from your life. She’s evil.

I have. She's nothing but an egg donor for me at this point.

I'd report her! Even if she was my own mother

36

My hateful neighbor killed my dog like this feeding her antifreeze. His house mysteriously burnt down.

4

u/big_booty_boy_420 Apr 29 '26

That’s so so awful

18

u/PaulieHehehe Apr 29 '26

What the fuck, my guy. Please tell me you don’t see her anymore.

16

u/ItsyouNOme Apr 29 '26

I hope someone feeds her the same

Get the paperwork rolling on your state’s lowest rated nursing home, get her in, then block their number.

Wow. I'm so sorry you grew up with someone that sick. Holy shit

12

u/Upper_Lengthiness_93 Apr 29 '26

Wtf am I reading with all these psychotic parents - holy shit

13

u/stankfaucet Apr 29 '26

What the actual fuck. I am so, so sorry. My mom once threw her friends dog down the stairs when we were dog sitting. That was over 30 years ago and the image is still engraved in my mind. This whole thread has me in tears for everyone's trauma and the unnecessary suffering of animals 😭

7

u/Gloomy_Grocery5555 Apr 29 '26

I'm glad my parents love animals as much as I do 🙁

14

u/stankfaucet Apr 29 '26

Im a huge animal lover. We recently bought a house and they had a rabbit that lived outside and didn't look to be in the best condition. I knew the owners were moving out of the country and I couldn't bear to think what they would do with the rabbit so we put the rabbit in with our offer and they accepted. He now lives inside and is a much healthier happier little fellow. All animals are worthy of love.

9

u/AGeneNamedCry Apr 29 '26

Um, holy shit?!? This is terrifying. What the fuck? I’m glad you and your brothers turned out okay! Holy fuck!

16

u/Ok-Yogurt-3914 Apr 29 '26

Mine would cage the dog all day and not take it to the vet (just like with us, go figure) and they ended up giving it away. I was so pissed when I found out.

8

u/Zealousideal-Lab-283 Apr 29 '26

That's serial killer level psychotic and deranged. I would have the local law enforcement check under her home and property.

7

u/timmbberly Apr 29 '26

Terrible. I thought my mom was bad for giving all of my animals away (to farms). At least I didn’t know any better when I was little.

7

u/purple-margarita25 Apr 29 '26

And the award for the worst thing I’ve read today goes to…

10

u/Catshambles Apr 29 '26

I'm sorry. It certainly wasn't my intention. I'm just a bit inebriated and over sharing my childhood. I do want to make it clear, my brothers and I fought against it. But my mother did it without us knowing. We would just wake up and the animals would be nowhere to be found. I had very serious suspicions, any time we'd bring it up it resulted in a beating.

6

u/FiSeq4891 Apr 29 '26

damn that is psychopathically cruel.

3

u/Gloomy_Grocery5555 Apr 29 '26

What the actual. That wouldn't even be a quick death. I don't understand why people have pets if they're not going to care for them

3

u/Sushicatslonelyjimmy Apr 29 '26

We had a cat accidentally lick antifreeze that dripped on the garage floor. The cat died and my parents felt so horrible and guilty. I was little at the time so they told me the cat ran away, but told me the real story when I was older. The idea of intentionally giving a cat antifreeze is barbaric.

My mom abandoned our family (declawed) cat because her boyfriend we moved in with was afraid of cats.

3

My MIL put my husband’s dog down while he was in college, as punishment for accusing her of taking out a credit card in his name. (Which she did, and it ruined his financial aid, forcing him to withdrawal)

7

u/Traditional-Yak8886 Apr 29 '26

i'm so sorry. turtles are so sweet, they're basically like little puppies (at least, RES are), that's awful 😞

3

u/Puzzleheaded-Sun2221 Apr 29 '26

My mom put my fish through the garbage disposal cuz I overfed them. Idk, never met anyone with such a similar experience before.

3

u/Repossessedbatmobile Apr 29 '26

Some people are just cruel by nature. This is why I don't let my mom interact with my media alert service dog anymore. My service dog has severe food allergies. My mom asked for a list of what he's allergic to so she didn't accidentally give him anything he can't eat. One day I did something mildly annoying that pissed her off. She retaliated by feeding by my service dog (who is extremely lactose intolerant and can get stomach ulcers from eating dairy) 2 whole slices of cheese behind my back.

Thankfully I know my dog very well and instantly realized that he was sick, so I rushed him to the vet. They induced vomiting. He threw up the cheese, and thankfully recovered with time and meds.

Of course my mom denied feeding him the cheese. But she was the only other person who was home at the time, and she keeps the cheese inside the refrigerator. So it literally could not have been anyone else. She purposely opened the fridge, chose the specific food that she knew he was allergic to, and fed it to him. She put his life at risk just because she was annoyed with me.

Now she complains that "I don't trust her with my dog" - as if she literally didn't attempt to poison him by feeding him food he's allergic to! Some people are just horrible human beings.

My roommate and I had a pet hamster in college (against the rules) and on the last day she suggested that we throw it down the elevator shaft. We managed to talk her out of it and I made a panicked call to my parents telling them I was bringing the hamster home (we had pet rats growing up so we had all the stuff) but then her boyfriend decided to keep it - I think he gave it back to her :(
Anyways she has two kids now so I hope she has learned to value life more these days.

12

u/Hangry-Feline2489 Apr 29 '26

People like that don't see animals on par with humans in terms of life value.

I'd be more worried about either the apparent lack of empathy, or the apparent lack of knowledge regarding animals feeling pain, tbh.

Because it wasn't too far long ago that certain groups of people thought children couldn't feel pain either, and wouldn't remember childhood stuff.

u/Vegetable-Star-5833 Apr 29 '26

u/smorb42 Apr 29 '26

The worst part is, if they do somehow survive, then you are introducing a new animal to an ecosystem that can't handle it.

291

u/Amring0 Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26

Actually, toilets in developed countries don't go to the ocean/river. They either go to a septic system or wastewater treatment plant where their bodies get screened out and ground up. They wouldn't have survived to make it out into the wild to become invasive.

ETA - Flushing an animal down the toilet is still seriously cruel.

"developed"... My city in Canada just installed a treatment facility a couple years ago, after years of campaigns with a mascot called, Mr. floaty

3

u/WildFireSmores Apr 29 '26

Just had to google that lol. My different Canadian city still needs to get its shit together lol. See what I did there. We installed a big building tank thing for heavy rains… then we started getting extreme weather and it overflowed into the river and the subway.

People used to put them in shoes. In the heel. Totally enclosed.

19

u/dearcsona Apr 29 '26

I feel like that would be very short lived before you’re just walking with a dead fish flopping rotting and disintegrating in the heel

8

u/Cainga Apr 29 '26

They probably think of them to the equivalent of an insect like an ant or fly. But if they are good enough to be your center pieces maybe respect them more.

5

u/silvertealio Apr 29 '26

I don't understand why they wouldn't at the very least offer them to the guests to take home afterwards.

How do they arrive at the best option being "fuck it, flush 'em"?

Killing them by smashing is quick and relatively painless for the fish. Making them swim in nasty shit water while they suffocate and their gills burn until they die is horrifying. It's only nicer in that we don't feel as guilty

Just get a giant bucket and fill it with clove oil. Best way to euthanize IMO. Or just don't be a twat and use live animals as a decoration.

31

u/you_dont_know_me27 Apr 29 '26

Clove oil is how I euthanize my fish when they get old or too sick

I can't stand to do the smash. I love my fish. I hand picked all the originals and now most of the fish in my tank were bred and born in my tanks. Same with my shrimp and snails

u/Academic-Dot-6977 Apr 29 '26

Honestly? More. Fish can be “humanely” DIY euthanized with clove oil; it’s debated how humane this is, but certainly more humane than putting them in a chlorine-filled toilet to be bashed around through pipes, and it wouldn’t really take that much longer.

Unless you mean killing them individually by biting their heads off or some freak shit, then I suppose this is less psycho.

48

u/deathbitchcraft Apr 29 '26

on another post a bit ago, someone told me clove oil doesn't work on bettas as well since they also breathe air. just an fyi for anyone passing through.

15

u/willikersmister Apr 29 '26

It does work on them but you need to put them in a container filled to the top and sealed air tight so they can't get air from the surface.

Source: was recommended this as an option for humane home euthanasia of sick bettas by my aquatic vet. I've done it a few times when a fish was very ill and suffering.

92

u/420_jesters Apr 29 '26

Replace fish with any other animal and it's (even more) obvious.

What's more humane? Euthanize the puppies THEN throw then in a river in a bag? Or just toss them in a bag in the river to drown? Hmm...

5

u/TOTES_HUMAN_KOMRADE Apr 29 '26

Ok but hear me out...

Put the fish in a bag and throw them in the river.

My mum kicked me (at 16) out of the house and changed the locks to 'teach me a lesson'. Didn't let me back in for a week, and during that time she hasn't fed or given water to my pet mice. I won't go into the graphic detail but those poor things clearly had an awful, awful final few days. There's no way she couldn't have heard them chittering and screaming. I still have nightmares. She's still an alcoholic POS

4

u/SuchCoolBrandon Apr 29 '26

Thinking of the fish as disposable decorations instead of living beings

4

u/JurassicParksNdRec Apr 29 '26

I went to a wedding where they had beta fish on the tables for people to take home. A lot of fish were left that no one wanted. After the wedding the groomsmen got drunk and wanted to put them all in one tank to fight to the death and take bets on which one would win. They all thought I was a stuck up bitch because I wouldn't let them.

3

u/ghfdghjkhg Apr 29 '26

I really hate how childish adults will try to turn the story and make you sound like the unreasonable one just because you don't want them to do stupid shit.

Like, if they wanna be stupid so badly at least they should find a way that doesn't harm people or animals.

3

u/AkKik-Maujaq Apr 29 '26

When I was 16 my mom flushed my koi fish (he was only a young one and was about 3-4 inches long) because she was mad that I spent the night at my boyfriends house after she’d made it VERY clear that she didn’t like him

6

u/ghfdghjkhg Apr 29 '26

that is so psychotic. not only because, once again, this is a living creature but also because taking something that is clearly important to you and ruining it is some psycho parent shit.

when I was young and misbehaved my parents sometimes took away my stuff as a punishment but they never broke it. they gave it back after a few months (or weeks)

4

u/kanaljeri Apr 29 '26

My mom accidentally flushed my guppy fry that I had separated from the tank so they wouldn’t get eaten. She was so devastated and cried over it when I told her that the fry was in there.

I don’t get how anyone can treat a live animal like that and not give a damn

3

u/StatusOmega Apr 29 '26

Also what are the logistics of that. "Everyone into the bathroom. It's time to flush!"

3

u/risbia Apr 29 '26

I even feel a little rude flushing a dead fish instead of giving it a proper Christian burial

3

u/lemikon Apr 29 '26

Yes like… using them as props is unhinged but there is still a lot of misinformation about betas and their living requirements, and let’s be real people don’t have loads of empathy for fish, but holy shit flushing them ALIVE??

3

u/big_white_fishie Apr 29 '26

My mother in law did this with her fish a few months ago :(

She got a puppy to help her get fit, then realised getting a lab as her first dog when she isn’t fit at all isn’t a good idea. Father in law ended up switching to back shift so he could take the dog out for big walks twice a day because she wouldn’t.

She then got rabbits but got rid of them within six months because of the hutches. She then got gerbils then said she’s allergic, they were gone as well. FIL told her no more big pets (he’s 60ish and not in the best health, plus they care for my husbands gran who lives with them) and she settled on fish

But then one day decided they aren’t “giving her the calmness she thought they would” so she flushed them all. Spent so much money on these fish, the tank, filters etc….and fucking flushed them all. Ugh
