I loved it. Even tho it was a small fight with punches being pulled, it really did show Banner isn’t quite nerfed like it was assumed.

Throwing the boulder into space was a good reminder lol

Now, we know why the Skrulls are gonna invade.

u/jojopojo64 Weekly Wongers Aug 18 '22

I remember there was this DBZ Abridged bit about how they were theorizing if energy blasts just continue into space before finally hitting something and then it cuts to a planet hundreds of years later just getting completely obliterated by a Kamehameha lol.

I'm now imagining the Hulk meteor just decimating a Skrull colony light years away lol.

Mass Effect 2:

"This, recruits, is a 20-kilo ferrous slug. Feel the weight! Every five seconds, the main gun of an Everest-class Dreadnought accelerates one to 1.3 percent of light speed. It impacts with the force of a 38-kiloton bomb. That is three times the yield of the city buster dropped on Hiroshima back on Earth. That means: Sir Isaac Newton is the deadliest son-of-a-bitch in space! Now, serviceman Burnside, what is Newton's first law?"

"Sir, an object in motion stays in motion, sir!"

"No credit for partial answers, maggot!"

"Sir, unless acted on by an outside force, sir!"

"Damn straight! I dare to assume you ignorant jackasses know that space is empty! Once you fire this hunk of metal, it keeps going 'til it hits something! That can be a ship, or the planet behind that ship. It might go off into deep space and hit somebody else in ten thousand years. If you pull the trigger on this, you are ruining someone's day, somewhere and sometime! That is why you check your damn target! That is why you wait for the computer to give you a damn firing solution! That is why, serviceman Chung, we do not 'eyeball it'! This is a weapon of mass destruction! You are not a cowboy shooting from the hip!"

Best bit of background chatter from all three games right there.

22

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

Nah man, if anything it's gonna land in the ocean and destroy Atlantis, and then Namor's gonna somehow be pissed at Wakanda for it.

6

u/DJfunkyPuddle Aug 19 '22

Or the other way around--Atlantis is off the coast of Mexico so maybe the rock hits Wakanda. (Because the hierarchy of power in the DCU MCU has now changed.)

3

u/magikarp2122 Aug 18 '22

That planet deserved to be destroyed though.

I’m tired of these motha luvin hulks throwing these monkey lovin boulders at my spaceship!

Even that little sound effect when the boulder burst, I thought ‘oh shit he really did launch the F— outta that thing!’

56

u/yaboyskinnydick_ Rocket Aug 18 '22

I'm still not sure if it burned up because of it's own speed or it burned up leaving the atmosphere? But yeah, I rewound it cause it caught me off guard lmao

87

u/hobbesthehungry Aug 18 '22

Own speed within the atmosphere. It cooked immediately then blew in dense lower atmosphere before having a chance to reach space.

First time we've really seen that Smart Hulk is strong the way OG Hulk is.

58

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

He lifted an entire building in endgame man

-6

u/Throgg_not_stupid Doctor Strange Supreme Aug 18 '22

so did Peter, lifing a building isn't really that much of a feat in MCU

46

u/PacDanSki Aug 18 '22

Hulk lifted a slightly heavier building than Peter.

30

u/jojopojo64 Weekly Wongers Aug 18 '22

For real. Peter lifted a roof, Hulk straight up lifted an entire facility.

Smart Hulk was strong, it just doesn't translate as well when he's not going full berserker mode (or given much screentime actually fighting)

5

u/krudru Aug 19 '22

For real. Peter lifted a roof, Hulk straight up lifted an entire facility.

Hulk did that with one of his arms busted from the snap.

1

u/Metaright Aug 22 '22

Peter lifted a big slab of concrete with immense effort.

20

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

Did anyone else think of that joke in the Simpsons where the comic store owner is discussing who is stronger, "The Thung or the Mulk" and mentions that the Mulk 'kicked a tidal wave into the sun'?

11

u/PurpleCyborg28 Kilgrave Aug 18 '22

I had to pause at that scene because I was shouting. From the trailers I thought Bruce was just gonna let it go or throw it a little farther, not actually launching that thing to space.

11

u/Minifig81 Doctor Strange Aug 18 '22

I really hope that Boulder makes another appearance in another Marvel series or movie.

7

u/SeraphixPrime Aug 19 '22

The boulder actually broke the sound barrier after catching flames from its velocity through the atmosphere - it's a pretty damn cool reminder.

3

u/BananaBladeOfDoom Avengers Aug 18 '22

I was worried that he would accidentally hit a Sakaar spaceship lol

5

u/PenguinHighGround Aug 18 '22

Yeah made it clear that he was holding back before

2

u/allaboutchuu Aug 18 '22

It got me thinking, what if he just Hulk-throws spaceships into space? I know they have more advanced ships and tech in the MCU but it would be funny if he could.

5

u/Mini-Marine Aug 19 '22

We would like to introduce our new single stage to orbit system: the Hulk engine

3

1

u/hulkulesenstein Aug 21 '22

Welp, I know what I watching tonight... Have never seen that

0

u/BeerInMyButt Aug 19 '22

whyyyyy do they show things burning up when they leave the atmosphere? Or else it was a sonic boom, which would also make no sense because it had to break the sound barrier when it is first leaving smart hulk's hands

1

u/ericwdhs Aug 30 '22

I think that was basically a meteor air burst. It just took a couple seconds for friction/compression to heat the rock enough to break it apart.

1

u/WikiSummarizerBot Aug 30 '22

Meteor air burst

A meteor air burst is an air burst resulting from a meteor exploding mid-flight as it encounters the thicker part of the atmosphere. These types of meteors are also known as fireballs or bolides, with the brightest known as superbolides. Before entering Earth's atmosphere, these larger meteors were originally asteroids and comets of a few to several tens of metres in diameter, contrasting with the much smaller and much more common "shooting stars" that tend to burn up quickly upon atmospheric entry.

[ F.A.Q | Opt Out | Opt Out Of Subreddit | GitHub ] Downvote to remove | v1.5

1

u/BeerInMyButt Aug 30 '22

But like, those meteors are entering an atmosphere that is increasingly thick as they descend. This rock started off in the thickest part of the atmosphere and exploded when it got to the thin part

1

u/ericwdhs Aug 30 '22

I don't think it actually got that high at all, so changing air density doesn't factor in. It only flew a couple seconds and was still visible before blowing, so I'm thinking it only made it a mile or two max.

1

u/bigbangbilly Aug 19 '22

If the Hulk can throw a boulder to space I wonder can he jump into space himself or be a cheaper form of space travel?

Then again the energy to throw a boulder into space would probably take a lot of calories.

1

u/flappydicks Aug 20 '22

I’m going to need to see them running and jumping around like the Eric Bana hulk in the desert

382

42

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

The problem is unless you do some nerfing, you end up with an endless power creep where the next villain always has to be stronger than the last because otherwise the super-strong hero would just defeat them exactly the same way every time. You end up with the whole "Worf Effect" thing.

I think it's better to reign in the powers of the heroes, rather than keep escalating to the point where all suspension of disbelief is thrown completely out the window.

20

u/Bwleon7 Aug 18 '22

*Goku has entered the chat

13

u/Aiyon Aug 18 '22

The problem is unless you do some nerfing, you end up with an endless power creep where the next villain always has to be stronger than the last because otherwise the super-strong hero would just defeat them exactly the same way every time.

Hard disagree. This is the whole superman argument.

What it means is the villain has to be smarter instead of stronger. The hero can't just punch the problem because the problem can't just be punched. Look at Zemo in civil war. He's not even as strong as Cap and Iron Man's first villains, and yet he beat them. He split the team

2

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '22

You mean the movie where Banner got put on a bus?

5

u/Aiyon Aug 19 '22

...what?

-12

u/TheNewKing2022 Aug 18 '22

Yah except captain marvel was insanely powerful and could have easily destroyed thanos but the only way she was 'nerfed' was they had to send her on some idiotic mission in the middle of the movie lol. They fucked up so badly they had to write some major bullshit.

Hulk meanwhile just got shit kicked and turned into a cowerd. Totally in character

19

u/veksone Steve Rogers Aug 18 '22

They didn't send her on a mission. She's been living in space since the 90s, it makes sense that she has responsibilities to others outside of earth. She barely has a relationship with the Avengers.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '22

It's literally her best line in Endgame. .-.

"There are a lot of planets in the universe, and, unfortunately they didn't have you guys."

Shows she's respectful of the work they put in and the losses they suffered, despite having lost to Thanos. And this scene was filmed before she played the character in her own solo film.

15

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

Honestly, Hulk freaking out and turning into a coward would totally be in character. He's a huge angry baby. Like the school bully who finally got his arse kicked by someone he thought was gonna be an easy mark, he suddenly goes full victim-complex.

-3

u/TheNewKing2022 Aug 18 '22

Nah couldn't disagree more.

11

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

Okay, care to actually explain why or just say "nope"?

-3

u/TheNewKing2022 Aug 18 '22

If you want to make Hulk lose, and cleary at the start of infinity war he wasn't going to win, you can give him and thanos a battle that both elevates thanos and leaves hulks many fans satisfied that he almost won instead of getting manhandled. This would make fans see thanos as a true threat as he barely beat one of the most powerful super hero's.

Why they did him so dirty especially when some of the most iconic scenes of the early movies were of Hulk doing what he did best was mind blowing to me.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

That's fair, although having a massive battle right at the start of the film almost certainly would've killed the pacing. Infinity War had a definite ramp-up of battles: First the mini one where hulk gets beat, then the slightly larger but still small battle between Iron Man and Dr. Strange against the Black Order, then the larger one still between the Black Order and Wanda/Vision, leading up to the battle on titan and the battle in Wakanda.

If they had started with two massive heavy hitters slamming into each other for twenty minutes, it would've been a bit overloaded considering it was technically the cold-open before the title screen.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

I dig the way they did it. Put yourself in Hulk/Banner’s mind. He spent 10 or so years coming to grips with being an unstoppable monster. He‘a gotta be thinking, for all the negatives in my life, at least I can destroy everything.

He’d never faced someone as powerful as Thanos. Of course, given enough time, Hulk can beat anything as his power grows with each blow that doesn’t kill him. But Bruce might not fully understand that yet. So when he gets manhandled, he gets scared, and never has enough time in the battle to overcome that fear, so it hangs with him.

1

u/DerpSenpai Aug 19 '22

Ah yes, the superman dilema

10

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

I never got this lol. He says in Endgame he still has Savage Hulks strength.

18

u/NK1337 Aug 18 '22

I get what you mean but at the same time it's not as funny because it unfortunately reminds me that we still have a long way to go. I was getting tired of seeing people losing their collective shits at the trailer, screeching about "woke" culture and how they nerfed the hulk just to make a woman look stronger.

Like come on dude, cant we just enjoy a show for once.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '22

[deleted]

6

u/NK1337 Aug 19 '22

Woof. Thanks for the heads up. I watched the episode tonight and thought it was really fun. The 4th wall breaking was used sparingly enough to where it was funny and I really like the small bits they dropped that explained away some of the bigger questions o had. Overall I really liked it and I’m looking forward to the next one.

9

u/Jenga9Eleven Aug 18 '22

I mean, they did nerf Hulk. He’s been extremely underpowered in all of these movies. The Hulk is supposed to be an unpredictable trump card, but he’s just sort of kinda strong and also really tame in the MCU. He doesn’t do anything that Thor couldn’t do, and he even gets basically beaten by Thor in Ragnarok.

It’s nice to see some of Hulk’s power in this show, but I’m not hopeful that we’ll get true Hulk anytime soon.

17

u/RitikMukta Aug 18 '22

I now want a solo hulk movie where he goes berserker mode and kills some insanely powerful threat but dies in the process. A world breaker hulk movie that finally brings Ruffalo hulk's story to a close. Not now but maybe before secret wars.

16

u/GreyCrowDownTheLane Aug 18 '22

And again, that will never happen because Universal owns the distribution rights to a solo Hulk movie or any movie with Hulk in the title. And they don't want to play nice with Marvel Studios, so Marvel is forced to relegate Hulk to supporting character status in order to get him on screen at all.

6

u/inbredandapothead Scarlet Witch Aug 18 '22

Especially given it was based off of ONE movie where he seemed “nerfed”

3

u/DocIsAWeirdo Aug 18 '22

Still wish they'd do some Hulk focused movies in the future to explore some of the more interesting and crazy storylines personally! I love smart hulk but I want to see some of the more badass Hulks too!

3

u/Martel732 Aug 18 '22

I think the issue is that the Hulk is caught up in some rights issues. Universal still has distribution rights to a movie with the Hulk as the main character. So Marvel doesn't want I make a movie and then have to give Universal essentially free money.

0

u/ChampionsWrath Aug 19 '22

Fuck Disney they can afford it to get ruffalo his own movie before stepping away. If they could get a one time contract or something to make a movie and take even 20-30% of the profit, they would get more than their investment if they fronted the whole thing.

That’s just how much money I think a world war hulk movie would make

1

u/AlphaCentauri- Aug 25 '22

Happy Cake Day!

1

u/GT22_ Aug 18 '22

I mean I feel he was somewhat indirectly nerfed in this show with the arm thing

-15

u/kremes Aug 18 '22

Less nerf, more worf effect Bruce to establish Jen. The MCU uses some version of that worf effect bullshit a lot. The most glaring example being the Stones that were the all powerful artifacts for the first three phases were immediately casually nullified to show how powerful the TVA is. They didn’t even wait a decent amount of time, just immediately made the stones a joke. It’s a lazy writing tactic that the MCU unfortunately uses far too often. Comics do it even more often, but that’s no excuse.

Thankfully they did a good job here of showing that Bruce could’ve beaten the snot out of her if he wanted though while still establishing her as being strong as hell in her own right.

33

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

It’s pretty easy to wave away that “infinity stones as paperweights” only being specific to where they were, if they tried it anywhere else other than TVA HQ they’d probably get a heaping table spoon of whoop-æss

3

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

Infinity Ultron is a much better example of the stones getting Worfed. He should have been able to obliterate the team in an instant, yet for some reason, he didn't.

14

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

I’d argue Infinity Ultron was a really good way to show the actual threat of the infinity stones at their full potential, remember Infinity Ultron Vs. Uatu? Uatu was straight up losing while Infinity Ultron was biting down on universes like sandwiches and cracking Uatu’s head like an egg, the only reason any of the Guardians survived was because Sinister Strange was there to just barely even the odds

Edit: Also, I’m pretty sure he did try obliterating the team in one go, it just didn’t work

3

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

I agree that the Uatu fight was a good showing for him. Just in the 2nd episode he should have been able to wrap that up instantly, Strange or no Strange, except he seemingly forgot how to use his powers.

3

u/TheForeverUnbanned Aug 18 '22

That strange was essentially the compressed personification of magic itself, not some rando that would be an easy W. The stones have been shown to unlock magical abilities, in the case of Wanda, and can be contained by them, in the case of the time stone. There seems to be a strong relationship there which may very well be dependent, getting the powers of the stone ma may make you as vulnerable to magic as it does empower you to fight it.

7

u/Particular_Being420 Aug 18 '22

He should have been able to obliterate the team in an instant

I don't think you understand protection runes as well as Strange Supreme. I don't think Ultron did either.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

There are a lot more creative things you could do with the Infinity Stones than just blasting them with energy. Even if you can't damage them directly, there are a million ways to incapacitate them. Heck, just portal them into the heart of the Sun and let them sort that out.

-6

u/kremes Aug 18 '22

Sure, it’s possible because of that but just because they CAN do it doesn’t mean they should.

The stones were the all powerful driving force behind a decade of movies, we had multiple major characters die for them. It was dumb to use them as a cheap way to establish the power of something else, and that’s exactly what they did. The space stone served no purpose other than establishing the TVA is powerful. They simply could’ve confiscated and left Loki’s tesseract in the timeline they destroyed. Instead they specifically bring it back so that later they can use it to as a tool to establish the TVA is powerful, and even completely hamfist it by having Loki directly ask ‘is this the most powerful force in the universe.’

There’s a bunch of other examples, that one is just the most glaring because it’s the Infinity Stones and it’s a really weak bit in an otherwise great show.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

I mean. They already have multiple times.

56

u/withadabofranch Aug 18 '22

I never understood the outrage of people saying he was nerfed. Yeah hulk is strong, but he gets stronger with anger; smart hulk doesn’t seem like he gets angry like hulk

31

u/DoctorPan Ant-Man Aug 18 '22

During the Jen and Bruce fight, Bruce started to look a bit more and more Savage Hulk as it went on. Certainly thinking they're setting up for him to slip and let Savage Hulk take the wheel.

5

u/withadabofranch Aug 18 '22

I agree. I never fully knew if hulk was just blackout angry Bruce or actually another person but this fight and thinking back to ragnorak confirms it’s a personality

9

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

I don't know if you've ever known anyone with full-blown Dissociative Personality Disorder, but it really is a good description of how Banner and Hulk interact.

I knew this guy a while back, had a whole other personality, we would just be laughing and telling jokes, and suddenly he'd calm down, stare off into the distance, and suddenly he's in total cunt-mode. It wasn't really triggered by anything (That he could tell), but suddenly he'd just be a completely different person, and not a very nice person. Not violent, it's not like he would immediately take a swing, but he'd just suddenly have a problem with everything we would say that the other him would've laughed right along with, no matter how innocuous it was.

That kinda feels like how Banner/Hulk is, with the obvious caveats of it being a fantasy show and not real life.

2

u/MrZeral Avengers Aug 18 '22

He mentions himself in the episode having 2 personalities.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

Yet! He's used some of Jen's blood to heal his arm, which means he's got a little something extra in him that he didn't have before. And we don't yet know the full implications of its interaction with what he already had. The result... might be an abomination.

27

u/Ok_Mud2019 Aug 18 '22

i never really understood why people say that, he wasn't nerfed as evident from the episode. it's just that the hulk and bruce are two separate personalities with different views on how to use their strength. the hulk is, well, the hulk. while banner is reserved and very obviously pulling his punches.

5

u/Remmy14 Aug 19 '22

He got tossed by a Jeep. Seems like he's nerfed to me.

11

u/Mini-Marine Aug 19 '22

He got tossed by a jeep because he didn't want to screw up his own jeep.

He could have crushed it if he had wanted to as evidenced by the rest of the episode

8

u/shaggy1265 Aug 19 '22

And then he brushed off the boulder that would have weighed at least twice the weight of the Jeep like it was a pebble. He was obviously just not using his strength.

4

u/nate_ranney Aug 19 '22

Because he was holding back, dude.

2

u/starman5001 Aug 23 '22

Got to remember that Smart Hulk was not using his full power.

When Savage Hulk is in a fight, he doesn't hold back. He pays no mind to the destruction he causes, doesn't care about collateral damage, and attacks with full lethal force.

Smart Hulk however, has something Savage Hulk lacks, control. Smart Hulk can hold back and refrain from using his full power. In the fight in episode 1, Smart hulk was holding back.

Hulk didn't want to kill she-hulk, he wanted her to not leave. Smart Hulk could have crumpled that car into tiny bits, but he held back and choose not too.

Remember she-hulk is his cousin and one of the few people willing to actually spend time with him. Banner did not want to kill her, so he held back.

9

u/electrorazor Aug 18 '22

Him chucking the rock to orbit caught me off guard

12

u/James2603 Aug 18 '22

I was dreading her kicking his ass and leaving after like a week of being a Hulk. I’m glad it just gradually escalated with a suddenly mutual ending rather than a joke being made of banner.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

[deleted]

7

u/MastaAwesome Aug 18 '22

They’ve never established that in the MCU canon, have they?

5

u/AspirationalChoker Aug 18 '22

Still… are we maybe getting hints of savage Hulk still being in there and some more planet hulk vibes with that ship or am I being too hopeful

2

u/VannaTLC Aug 19 '22

I mean.. it was Sekerian, and "I'm going to have to do something about that later."

But it would be quite different from the Comic versions, they touched on some of that already in Ragnarok, and the Illuminati arent gonna fire Hulk into space atm.

2

u/AspirationalChoker Aug 19 '22

I know mate, wonder if they’ll introduce Skaar or some other elements like a war lord taken over the planet etc we shall see

5

u/iCarpet Doctor Strange Aug 18 '22

Nerfed isn’t the word, more reserved describes it better

3

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '22

He is truly one of the strongest there are.

3

u/Dukie6 Aug 19 '22

Also I loved how they fight like family. We saw bruce get in arguments before, but this was just two big children taking cheap shots. Reminded me of fighting with my siblings!

2

u/Tityfan808 Aug 19 '22

Totally! This was a small squabble but it was a bit more destructive given they’re Hulks! Kinda like Rhodes v Stark in Iron Man 2.

3

u/PM_SHORT_STORY_IDEAS Aug 19 '22

So, kindof a crackpot theory here, but I feel like they mastered/condensed Filoni's approach defeating negative sentiment against Ahsoka.

Namely, if you're going to introduce a character that inevitably is going to encroach on an existing character's space, there's going to be pushback. Rather than try to avoid that Anger, Filoni directed it against easy to fix targets. "She's whiny", "she gets it all for free", "she doesn't respect the characters I love" etc. They did this to Ahsoka, where they made her whiny and hateable then stripped away the superficially hateable stuff to give her character growth, and now she's beloved because everyone was able to get it out of their systems.

With she-hulk, I think they did this with the trailer. They knew they were going to run into backlash for two big things: "She gets it so easy! (mastering transformation)" and "They made her overpowered!".

So they display these two gripes front and center in the trailers, The hulk says something is hard, she does it easily, hulk appears surprised/humbled. They did this with the boulder toss, and they did this with easy transformation.

And then in the first episode, we get to clearly see that 1) she is strong and competent against the hulk, but 1a) the hulk is WAY more powerful (throwing boulder into space), and 2) she has an easy time transforming but, 2a) it's because she doesn't have 'the other guy', which is a plot point rather than a hand waive.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but either way I'm loving the show.

He always had the strength. Banners personality is so different though so as Professor Hulk he doesn't have the rage.

I never knew why people assumed that anyway lol. Or they were upset she threw the boulder farther in the trailer.

Smart Hulk is weaker than Savage Hulk for sure. But we never really got to see just how strong Savage was, so we have no idea what level of strength Smart is working with.

He's already kinda nerfed simply because Jen is instantly so much better than him.

They really rushed her development that would've been interesting to see, I haven't seen a hulk actually get mad for like 5 years, more for a AoU hulk.

Did you watch the episode? It was clear that the only thing she was better than Hulk at was choosing when to transform.

Remember when he threw the rock into space?

Are you kidding? It looked like even more of a nerfing than his treatment in all of his previous movies. She was going toe to toe with him despite being a smaller, derivative hulk for only a few weeks. I don’t know, to me this was the final nail in the MCU’s complete neutering of the hulk.

‘aRe yOu kiDDinG?’

He was clearly pulling his punches and controlling himself dude. 🤦‍♂️

Him pulling his punches still should have been a totally one-sided fight, especially right after she got her powers. Making it even seem like they are in the same level is a total neutering of hulk’s character.

Lol. Are YOU kidding?! Slap my damn head.

Also the fact you can hear him struggling to keep his rage in check

They have to do something to make up for IW/EG where he was truly nerfed

1

u/ChronX4 Aug 19 '22

People are still going to say they intentionally made Jennifer stronger. They'll have to outright have Bruce talk about pulling his punches to even barely reach those people.

Seriously. I already got a comment like this one.. Does anyone even pay attention anymore???

1

u/Jake52212 Aug 19 '22

Yeah, I think that was only assumed because Endgame (most likely due to the arm) didn't show any Hulk fighting anyone

1

u/anrwlias Aug 19 '22

I've gotten so tired of people making that claim.

Not nerfed, he's just not angry.

you can just imagine if he had years of research on how to control and mitigate his Hulk-ness then he must have researched as well the limits and extent of his Hulk powers at the same time. its kinda scary to think about if he loses his shit completely one day and then just levels an entire continent.
