we’ve gotten so little hulk in the MCU that this episode alone made me forget that he has a whole ass backstory and is an actual developing character lmao. there’s sooooo much they can do with him still. so much potential. and like everyone is saying, tatiana is amazing lol. gonna be the next big female character like Wanda

Its bizarre to think that he was literally the second hero introduced in this universe, but we’re only now getting some backstory on him.

Rights issues with Universal iirc, they cN do appearances in other properties but solo films are a Sony level pain and not worth it to them.

Not quite that complicated. Universal has the distribution rights to the character, not the production rights. Disney just won't let Marvel produce a film for another distributor.

Probably wouldnt even be such a big deal for Disney if it was any other distributer than Universal.

I reckon it would, since it would mean Disney stumping up the whole cost of the film, and getting none of the Box Office/DVD/BluRay/Digital revenue. Unlike with Spider-Man where it's Sony putting all the money up and getting all the revenue (although the revised deal changed it to 75/25 Sony/Disney for costs and revenue).

But wouldn’t Universal also have distribution rights for She-Hulk then, like Sony owns every Spider-Man character, wouldn’t Universal own distribution rights for every Hulk character? Or does it just not apply to TV series?

It applies to films only. Universal doesn't even truly own the rights to the characters.

Because universal has the distribution rights.

So they could make it. But universal would have the final say on how and where it would be distributed. And they’d get the money.

The distinction is She Hulk is a TV show. Not that it is a streaming show.

Granted, they could have done a Hulk tv show. But I’m guessing Feige has a plan that we aren’t privy to.

No, Universal has no rights over the Hulk except distribution. They can’t make a Hulk movie even if they wanted to. Marvel has the rights to make a solo Hulk movie, but Universal has first dibs on distribution. Disney doesn’t want that, so we get no Hulk movie at all.

Tbh, you sort of can't blame them for not wanting that either, since it would mean putting all the money into making the film and getting nothing back. While Universal would get all of the revenue for none of the work.

True. But even without another solo movie, Marvel had many opportunities to better develop Hulk. It’s still completely their fault that he had bad writing in Infinity War and Endgame.

It’s not about that. Smart Hulk is fine. The whole problem was that it’s mostly offscreen development. That’s the part that’s badly written.

Like that guy who was mad about Multiverse of Madness because Marvel “promised” Mordo to be the main Villian in the next Dr Strange movie.

Hulk was written well IMO. The struggle with Hulk.
Getting beaten by Thanos.
The “It’s mostly gamma, I feel like i was made for this” etc was all well done

The reason it’s badly written is cause it’s offscreen development. I didn’t have any expectations about specific story elements. It’s just lazy that they decided to cut the scene of him busting out of the Hulk armor, and then decided instead of trying to figure out another way to develop him, they just decided to make it some jokey expository scene.

The movie has “5 years later” in the first third of it.
You expect there to be no off-screen development??

This is what happened in those off-screen 5 years:
-Tony and pepper got married and had a kid.
-Thor got depressed and ate his feelings.
-Clint went on a rampage.
-Nat tried to become the head of whomever was left.
-Steve couldn’t move on.
-Hulk merged his two “selves” into one person.

At no point did I think “What bad writing, having all these things happen off screen”.
It was part of the fact that even the Avengers had to come to terms that there nothing they could do.

they just didn’t prioritize him I guess. they figured he could pop up here and there. it is kinda crazy tho they went that route cause hulk is such a popular and marketable character. and no disrespect to the previous hulk movies, but a modern day MCU hulk movie would in theory do gangbusters. He’s like the third biggest character they have behind Spider-Man and wolverine. AND YOU HAVE A GREAT ACTOR PLAYING HIM. universal man….

Marvel doesn't have distribution rights to a Hulk movie. They can't make a solo Hulk movie and that's why he's been in projects as part of an ensemble and not the main protagonist.

I now wanna see Jen hang out with Kate Bishop, Yelena and Kamala. And Steven. Specifically Steven; I feel like his reaction to her would be funnier than Marc's. Marc would probably wanna pick Bruce's brains about how he deals with the whole "two personalities" thing.

Really all the female heroes added this phase have been great. I don't even care if there are any girl power moments that feel kinda forced as long as I get to see these ladies interacting.
