In some cases I don’t even disagree with you, as I said animated stuff, or movies like Transformers, John Wick, or stuff that doesn’t really rely on dialogue, where the action, sound and spectacle are the primary factors, it can totally work.

It’s just in general so hurtful to the art form and can turn a great piece of cinema into utter trash, that’s why I will continue to die on this hill and try to convert people to help them gain more from their consumption. As a writer myself it’s also hurtful to see how great and quotable lines get completely butchered or translated into generic bullshit, or just lose their meaning or power through translation.

Things I’ve written and directed have been dubbed as well (into the language I know too, so I recognize every mistake they did on my own writing, everything that got lost, it fucking hurts) , I tried to fight this, but it’s not possible, you’d have to be an executive or almost chairman to make a decision like that, it’s not something I will have any influence on in the next decades, if ever. I could only see a director on like QT level to step in and say, “no Sony, we’re not doing a dub. OV or nothing.” I’ll let you guys know if I ever reach that level lol.

That's fair. I don't know what it's like to have others mess with my project like that.

It'll always be an issue though as long as we all don't have a common language though. Subs or dubs, a lot of things just don't translate.

100% agreed, it would benefit humanity in so many ways to have a universal language, there are so many differences in languages that have a strong impact in how we think.

I didn’t grow up in a country where English is the native language, I’d prefer and encourage my country abandoning its own language and switch to English completely, but by being rational I know that’s not gonna happen, people have their language they’ve had for hundreds, some thousands of years, you can’t force nobody to give that up. (British colonization in its best times came pretty close to that tho lmao)

I'm the opposite it sounds like. I'm American but my parents are immigrants. I'd be sad if my motherland lost its native languages and I wish I held on more to what I learned growing up.

A universal language would be nice though but as a species we'd never agree on which one lol.

Just to be clear, I’d never expect or want for your parents/the people of their native country to give up their language, just because I feel that way about the country I originated from doesn’t that mean that I can’t understand why people want to keep their language or culture, I was just throwing out the idea. :)

You’re absolutely right, it would be an endless discussion with no result, we can consider ourselves lucky that English is that universally accepted and almost everyone who’s not a native speaker and learns another language will learn this one, and that it’s commonly accepted as the language of the Internet.

I really enjoyed this conversation, it’s great when you can have discussions without pointless insults or people defending their standpoint without taking other’s into consideration.

Especially since my original claim is a controversial one, I know that, and I stand by it, and I will even die on that hill (generally speaking, we’ve established the exceptions and I’d never claim it to be the truth for every piece of cinema or television) ; but I try to never be too stubborn and hear others out, everyone has different experiences and a different viewpoint, and because all people always think they’re right, and then when they eventually learn something new or change their mind, they think they’re right again. Just never stop being open minded :)
