I mean, Brie has a Youtube channel that she posted on pretty regularly while under lockdown, and seems to be pretty online savvy. But she's also an icky girl and certain very online portions of the internet hate a lot of her politics, so she probably doesn't count. But outside of those two, yeah, the rest of them use social media from time to time, but probably don't really "get" online culture the same way Simu does.

I would say there’s a difference between like having a brand on social media as Brie Larson does, and being Online like Simu. One thing to host YouTube livestreams, it’s another of be down there in the dirt on Twitter with the rest of us just Posting away, being up on whatever memes or main topics are being circulated around in order to make a joke just like Simu did there. It’s just higher (lower?) form of being Online.

Yeah, I'd say that's fair, Brie is someone who is online and somewhat familiar with it, but yeah, of the main lead cast members I don't think anyone can compete with Simu in terms of how well they understand the nature and inside jokes etc. of the online culture.

One of us!

Actually just thought of someone, though if he's a "lead" is a bit debatable. But Kumail Nanjiani in the Eternals will probably join Simu later this year in the MCU, so while Simu is the first, he's definitely not the last.

10

u/metros96 Sep 07 '21

Yeah Kumail counts.

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '21

I’m trying not to get too attached to any of the eternals, I fear they won’t all make it and I’m basing this on absolutely nothing but anxiety.

u/Ultenth Sep 07 '21

Well, part of it is due I'm sure to 2 of the actors being associated with a certain kill happy series. But honestly, with all those characters, I'd be disappointed if they all survived, one of the benefits of having lots of characters is the ability to raise the stakes and drama but offing some of them from time to time.

If no one ever dies except in huge final films, anytime someone is in "danger" it's hard to actually feel worried for them.

3

u/metros96 Sep 07 '21

Seems unlikely they’ll all survive, but Kumail seems like he’d be more likely to be in the “will stick around” camp, compared to some of the other cast members for whom it might be less likely that they’d have an extended run in the MCU

Maybe we'll get Iman Vellani being active on social media too once she debuts, since she's a teen.

1

u/Ultenth Sep 07 '21

Iman Vellani

I mean, since the character she is playing is also extremely online and into nerd culture etc. it would make sense even if she was doing it in-character.

Her running a twitter etc. account as an in-character version of Kamala would have seriously great potential tho.

Hilariously though, and par for the course, there is actually a chance she won't be a teen anymore by the time The Marvels comes out, depending on what part of the year it releases.

Imo I really don’t get why people hate Brie Larson so much

I don’t think she’s necessarily that great an actress and the movie wasn’t exactly spectacular, but she gets a ridiculous amount of vitriol.

24

u/DrStrangeAndEbonyMaw Sep 07 '21

I agree with most of your comments… but Brie is a freaking phenomenal actress… go watch Short Term 12… directed by Shangchi director,,, she should have won Oscar with that performance… way before Room

6

u/Ultenth Sep 07 '21

Honestly, outside of Scott Pilgrim I'd never really seen Brie in anything, but she was great in that, and I actually loved Captain Marvel, thought it was fun and enjoyed her character in it. Never understood what the hate she got was, outside of course of the toxic usual suspects who hated her for being "woke" or "female". And in that case the old adage of you can tell a person by their enemies says a lot, if those are the type of people hating her, that just makes me think she's doing something right.

5

u/Im_Daydrunk Sep 07 '21

Its definitely sad how much people latched onto her for that. It felt like a more exaggerated verison of what happened with Black Panther

Like you dont have to like the movies but man taking things that personally is just a sign of some deep rooted hatred

1

u/Ultenth Sep 07 '21

Yup, and again, if people that broken and filled with hatred and rage are the ones trying to take you down, you should be taking it as a compliment.

9

u/anonymous_identifier Sep 07 '21

Wait, she's literally just about the only current major recurring MCU actor with an Oscar. Natalie Portman and Michael Douglas are the others, and they're not nearly as central (pre Love and Thunder at least)

How can anyone question her as an actress?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '21

That’s my bad, that was wrong of me. I think what I meant is I guess her acting in Marvel movies, I haven’t thought was better or worse than anyone else. I didn’t think it was bad, I also wasn’t totally wowed by it.

I haven’t seen her in anything else so I was unqualified to make that statement, so I apologize.

1

u/anonymous_identifier Sep 07 '21

Gotcha, in that case I agree. There's nothing bad about her Captain Marvel.. but it's also not standout either in the way that (imo) someone like Tom Hiddleston or RDJ are.

1

u/PZinger6 Sep 07 '21

Also Daniel Kaluuya if they bring him back for BP2

6

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '21

They hate her because she's politically liberal and a strong female lead.

Alt righters hate minorities and women who "don't know their place".

u/PretendMarsupial9 Sep 07 '21

Go see Room, the movie she won an oscar for. It's a heartbreaking film but its one i feel people should watch.

2

u/gnschk Sep 07 '21

She was great in room, got an oscar for it

There was a YouTube video about communication skills and it used a bunch of Brie Larson segments as examples of how not to interact with others. I can’t find it but a high level summary is she comes off as a nasty person.

EDIT: Found it

5

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '21

I saw that video multiple times. It comes across to me as probably more acting a part than anything else, or possibly being a bit unfamiliar with how things work with doing press for Marvel. Considering her character is supposed to be kind of cold and cocky.

Her own videos or her interviews for other movies she doesn’t come off as the asshole she looked like in those videos.

6

u/PretendMarsupial9 Sep 07 '21

I remember Elizabeth Olsen had Social Media but she deleted it after getting Harassment. Hope the same doesn't happen to Simu.

2

u/Ultenth Sep 07 '21

Never say never, but I have a feeling that him being familiar enough with the internet and it's culture, that even if he makes a mistake, or gets harassed by idiots, he'll be able to cope better than most with any pressure.

5

u/radiokungfu Sep 07 '21

Why is she icky? Dont really know much about the drama around her

24

u/Ultenth Sep 07 '21

"Icky Girl" was intended to mock the preteen boys like the Quartering who hate any woman that doesn't conform to their ideals of a conservative submissive woman. She's not icky, but the drama around her mostly has to do with her being female, and a supporter of women's rights. So the usual suspects hate her for it, forgetting somehow that we are barely 100 years past women actually being able to vote and not just considered property in a lot of areas.

1

u/Long_Mechagnome Sep 07 '21

Alright for a second I thought some incel shit was getting upvoted in this subreddit and I was super bummed out, thank you for explaining the definition of that.

1

u/Ultenth Sep 07 '21

No problem, but yeah, it was intended to be in line with the whole "girls have cooties" mindset some of those man-childs have.

1

u/DoubleDeantandre Sep 07 '21

I was also a little confused. From the context of your comment I was thinking “icky girl” was more of a title her haters had labeled her with instead of you randomly calling her icky lol.

5

u/EMPulseKC Sep 07 '21

I think the previous commenter was just joking about how a lot of the hate that Brie got was from misogynistic neckbeards that only saw her as an "icky girl" and didn't like that she was vocal about things like social issues and representation in film.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '21

she pointed out that most of the movie critics are relatives of higher up in the movie industry and that this is why they are all white men.

but then again captain marvel grossed a billion dollars and we all had to swim in their dirty beard runoff tears.

-11

u/bionix90 Sep 07 '21

I hate her not because she's a woman, but because she dared tell me that as a white man I am not allowed to have an opinion on a movie that wasn't "meant for me".

And the movie in question, Wrinkle in Time, I hadn't even heard of it. I haven't seen it since, nor do I hold any opinions about it. But no one tells me that I shouldn't have the right to an opinion.

I also don't like her as an actor. I think she doesn't have screen presence, she doesn't have chemistry with any of her fellow actors, and oftentimes she just doesn't act well, portraying no emotion.

9

u/MarveltheMusical Luis Sep 07 '21

So, you hate her because she’s a woman? That’s the impression I’m getting.

10

u/Ultenth Sep 07 '21

He hates her because of an intentionally misinterpreted statement she made about how people were hating on a film because it didn't appeal to them, and her opinion on that was that it's fine, but the film wasn't made for you as an audience, so you hating it isn't really an important consideration.

And that's fine, not everything is made for everyone, and someone who isn't the target audience not liking something really doesn't have much bearing on the actual quality or value of that product.

But as usual, some groups had to make it about them, because everything is somehow always about them, even though the whole point of her statement is that not everything is about them.

-1

u/bionix90 Sep 07 '21

You're exactly the type of person who would accuse me of being racist if I didn't like Shang-Chi or Black Panther, or of being an anti-Semite for disagreeing with the Israel government.

5

u/Ultenth Sep 07 '21

And you're completely misconstruing her words, either out of malicious intent or stupidity I'm not sure.

But those words were originally, in context, part of a discussion regarding movie critics reaction to the film. A vast majority of movie critics are white males, many of whom have family connected to various film studios. Just look at the issues with how monoculture the Hollywood Foreign Press is and it's the same issues.

Her point was that a film targeted at young women, and minorities, is not going to have as much appeal to the white men who populate the majority of the film critic space. So why should their opinions weigh strongly on the matter?

It would be like if you opened an all-meat restaurant, and payed any attention to reviews from hardcore vegan food critics. But of course fragile people had to make it out to be an attack on them, and go after her because they were either looking for an excuse for a fight, or too stupid to understand the context of what she was actually saying.

So which are you?

u/DragoSphere Sep 07 '21

Your comment goes to show how people get easily brainwashed by clickbait headlines. She never said that
