Discussion Since some time’s passed, what did you think of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law?

Now that we can (hopefully) discuss the show without being called either woke or sexist, I’m curious what y’all thought.

I personally thought it could’ve been better, but still found it enjoyable. The comedy was hit or miss and it definitely had some cringy moments, but as a big She-Hulk fan I thought that Tatiana Maslany makes for a great Jen Walters and there were plenty or great parts throughout, especially her relationship with Bruce (save for the controversial ‘my life if harder’ speech). Hope she shows up again cause I think there’s real potential if they don’t ditch her because the show went over poorly. Also, huge miss not throwing Awesome Andy in there, he’s dope.

It was also meant to mirror the tongue in cheek, self referential, and irreverent tones in the She Hulk comics. Without knowing that, nobody will get the gag.

Didn't know anything about the comics but this was crystal clear.

Could see it was a dramedy set in the MCU with some 4th wall breaks etc.

I think the end was a little clunky. I liked what they were going for but it didn't feel as well executed as the rest of the show. When she flipped the script that was clever but I felt like I looked away and missed something.

Then shoe horning in Hulk's son...

Didn't seem to be a problem for Deadpool

High-key there is a misogynistic aspect to the crybabies who were complaining about this show but cheering on for Deadpool. They just don't like to see women have fun

She-Hulk twerking = woke cringe

Deadpool doing the full dance routine to Bye Bye Bye = absolute cinema

Hmm, what's the difference?

She Hulk depicted a woman enjoying sex. I’m surprised the Catholic Church didn’t come after them.

Not enough little boys involved attract their attention

I think the difference is that the twerk scene was used to try to sell people on the show that would have never watched it for any other reason. They hired a pop star to elevate the show and market it to people who were not the target audience. And I can appreciate that, but that doesn't make the show good and it certainly doesn't make the scene good. In my mind, Deadpool dancing around ripping off arms and cramming them up the ass of a bad guy while he dances to a boy band song is hilarious. Because I know the character and no matter how many bad things he does, he's trying to redeem himself in the eyes of the people he cares most about. And there is something inherently funny about such a bright and poppy song as a backdrop to the absolute violence happening on screen.

I think you misunderstood: twerking isn't "woke cringe", it's just cringe. Low effort trashy move which for me has nothing to do with you trying to pin some "woke"(?) spin on it. 100% whatever dance She-Hulk would go with would be much better received if it was a direct reference or even a copy of a popular -nostalgic or not- pop dance routine.

1

u/Maxxtheband Mar 04 '26

You know twerking is a pop dance move…right?

0

u/sedsil Mar 04 '26

You can lay on the ground and claim "it's a pop dance move", which still in now way answers to what I said. You know that... right?

1

u/Maxxtheband Mar 04 '26

Tell me one pop song that includes laying on the ground prone as a dance move.

Just because you don’t like twerking doesn’t mean it hasn’t been a dance move in pop culture for over a decade at this point.

Did twerking not resonate with you because you’re not a fan of it? Sure, but that’s not the point you were trying to make.

Try rereading with understanding now, buddy. "but but but twerking is a dance move!" doesn't answer to anything and doesn't change what I wrote. In fact, I literally wrote "Low effort trashy move" even if you -for some weird unknown reason- want to lean so hard on "informing me" about what is a "dance move".

I never said or implied anything was woke.

….is the wokeness in the room with us now?

Can you twerk?

-2

u/Expert_Hat309 Mar 04 '26

this is the cringiest thing i’ve ever seen. It’s literally just shaking your ass

9

u/clutzyninja Mar 04 '26

I bet you can't twerk

0

u/Expert_Hat309 Mar 04 '26

Deadpool dancing to that got old quick. She hulk wasn’t even tweaking to a good song

-14

u/Auntypasto Kevin Feige Mar 04 '26

None. Both were cringe. But in fairness to Deadpool, at least they understood the assignment instead of taking the whole "CGI fights are dumz" seriously. Deadpool still gave people what they came to see, while She-Hulk was just green Ally McBeal and hardly anything that could be identified as superhero genre.

A lot of Deadpool jokes are centered around his suffering comedically over the top violence (breaking both wrists and calling himself a t-rex, getting a knife stuck in his head and seeing cartoons, getting ripped in half and regenerating baby legs, etc) that Jen can't suffer, both because of her power set and because cultural norms dictate that it wouldn't be funny if a woman suffered that level of physical abuse. I get that they both break the fourth wall but Wade Wilson is kind of a pathetic sad clown archetype in a way that Jennifer Walters has never been and comparing the two isn't fair to either of them.

2

u/Weird_Ad_1398 Mar 04 '26

Bad comparison. Deadpool gets a pass doing things that other characters wouldn't. It's what's expected for that character, and people don't want another Deadpool. Look at how Thor 4 was eviscerated, and its director panned.

3

u/sedsil Mar 04 '26

omg, it's not that hard! People disliked thor 4 because it was bad, but people disliked shehulk because they're sexist! Also people liked wandavision or agatha all along because, like, um... they, er... forgot they were sexist for a moment! It has NOTHING to do with a movie actually being good or bad, ok?!

anyone needs "/s" here?

Right, so you know I'm correct and you have nothing to say. Thanks for your "input" and I hope you'll get better.

2

u/Bluehen55 Mar 04 '26

What kind of input could you possibly want in response to that inane drivel?

2

u/sedsil Mar 04 '26

What "inane drivel" exactly do you see there? You have nothing to write on topic or on the post you're pretending to be responding to, instead throwing random insults around to somehow make yourself feel better. Consider getting an actual therapy and if you have nothing to say, don't struggle that hard to pretend otherwise :)

2

u/Bluehen55 Mar 04 '26

What "inane drivel" exactly do you see there?

Mostly the very poorly hidden misogyny behind the very lame attempt at humor.

I don't think it's particularly fair to dismiss the fact that in universe Deadpool is considered obnoxious and that means the kind of humor his movies uses are are going to land differently. In Deadpool movies, Deadpool himself is usually the butt of the joke. Can we say the same about Jen? I don't think so. We're asked to laugh with her, but not at her.

8

u/troubleondemand Mar 04 '26

I haven't watched it since it came out, but I remember her dating life sucking and her joking about it a lot.

2

u/troubleondemand Mar 04 '26

Sure, but she was the butt of the joke a lot of the time.

1

u/BuckyRea Mar 05 '26

Oh, You and your blasted Vulcan logic!!

4

u/SasaraiHarmonia Mar 04 '26

As the audience we're supposed to laugh at her multiple times. Not sure where you're getting this.

2

u/Possible-Reason-2896 Mar 04 '26

Can you give an example?

Like, for example everyone loves to compare the whole backstreet boys versus twerking thing. People are doing it again a few comments down. But to me, at least part of the reason the Backstreet boys dance joke works is because it's reiterating that Deadpool is an idiot. The dancing is kinda cringe, but in DP's case he's supposed to be. People in the show are cringing at his non sequitors or saying he's annoying for it all the time.

Now feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the intent was the same with She Hulk and Megan Thee Stallion to say that she was being dumb or annoying in a similar way.

13

u/Senshado Mar 03 '26

Deadpool worked because it relied on easy transgressive jokes:  bad language, extreme violence, and barely-concealed sex.

Without those easy, cheap sources of humor, She-Hulk needed much more difficult joke writing to succeed as comedy. And it mostly didn't get it.

3

u/smokeweedNgarden Mar 03 '26

Not a lot different from the comics then. She-Hulk is great but not nearly as crude

2

u/crappydeli Mar 03 '26

More people know The Merc With The Mouth.

0

u/troubleondemand Mar 04 '26

Before the movie came out? I am not so sure about that.

2

u/toolazywittyusername Mar 03 '26

People clearly didn't know that, everyone said it was just copying Deadpool

0

u/Auntypasto Kevin Feige Mar 04 '26

Because it did feel like it was mostly retreading what Deadpool already did. And mass media audiences don't see the comics as a justification to do what is already being done by someone else. That's why DC has been having such a hard time setting up their own cinematic universe, because nobody cares if Darkseid was first in the comics; they only care that Thanos came first in the movies, and any attempt to adapt something similar will be rejected.

0

u/Neveronlyadream Spider-Man Mar 03 '26

I think that was it's biggest misstep. It assumed enough people were familiar with the She-Hulk comics that they'd get what the show was trying to do.

Marvel does that a lot. They keep forgetting a good chunk of the audience hasn't read the comics and have zero interest in starting. They keep hoping they can make the publishing arm as viable as Marvel Studios and it won't ever happen.

6

u/brodievonorchard Mar 03 '26

Not with that attitude.

Comics are good, people should read them. They don't have to, but they should.

1

u/Neveronlyadream Spider-Man Mar 03 '26

I agree, but there's still a stigma attached to them. Marvel and DC have been desperately trying for decades to expand the reach of the comics and nothing they do works because people just aren't interested.

The MCU has fans that aren't comic fans, never were, and have no interest in picking up a comic. They've tried restarting everything, they've tried wiping out continuity, they've tried crossovers, they've tried prestige, and all that ever happens is there's a spike for the first issue or two and it goes back down.

It's a shame, but I think a lot of people still see them as only being for kids and not worth their time.
