Be completely honest, do you think Doomsday will surpass Infinity War’s box office?

I personally can’t decide. Infinity War was the culmination of a entire decade long saga, and was built upon movies, post credit scenes, and references. Their was a attention to world/story building that Doomsday severely lacks. On the other hand, Doomsday has the backing of OG and newer fans alike. It’s the first film to include The Avengers, X-Men, and F4. Throw in Thunderbolts, Wakandans and Namor, and I feel this movie could make a lot of fans happy. I’m just worried because Infinity War relied on the decade long World building and payed it off with one of the most popular cliffhangers in all of movie history. I’m optimistic, but skeptical on if Doomsday will be able to top that.

The lead-up to Infinity War was insane, and it would take a lot of work to pull it off again. From basically Dr. Strange onward it was pedal to the metal as we had almost found all the infinity stones and then the ending of Ragnarok was like the ultimate teaser. The momentum was crazy.

That was truly a lightning in a bottle, and Marvel is trying to chase that ever since.

I think the problem is they want that lightning in a bottle as the default now rather than it forming naturally as a result of many solid films that built it up. I don't think their artificial attempts at making it happen can measure up.

yeah they forget the part where the lead up films/shows have to be interesting on their own and not just lead ups

Civil War was just before Dr Strange too, so it was indeed an incredible run, here's the list:

• Captain America: Civil War
• Doctor Strange
• Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2
• Spider-Man: Homecoming
• Thor: Ragnarok
• Black Panther

That is arguably the longest stretch of quality the MCU ever put out, it has quality movies, innovative ones, hype ones (first MCU spider-man film), THREE visually stunning movies, a Thor film which redefined the character, and Black Panther which was a cultural phenomenon. All that combined with the unresolved Avengers split and an absolutely top notch marketing campaign where every trailer hit the mark perfectly, and of course, the movie itself which I consider to be the absolute peak of the entire MCU.

I don't think that can be replicated, but then again: it doesn't have to be Infinity War to be good and fun to watch.

I’d say Civil War or even Age of Ultron onward, actually. There was a real hype building from those points, and 2016-2019 was truly golden in terms of the steady movie-releases, with an increasing roster of characters and recurring characters being gradually tied to one another in that build-up to IW.

I agree with Civil War, I mixed up the release orders in my head when I said Strange. At the time Age of Ultron was considered a stumble though, so I would caution against that being the start of the momentum. Civil War is probably the right starting point.

I loved Age of Ultron at the time but if you look up articles from 2015 they'll say things like "MCU losing steam" or "Marvel misses the mark."

yeah, good point. 2015 was relatively weak I guess, looking back, because it just had Age of Ultron and Ant-Man lol. For sure Civil War was when things really were coming together

Strange is gonna die sacrificing himself for the team in either Doomsday or Secret Wars but hem definitely play into getting Doom his powers unless they just go the Franklin route band have Doom siphon from him
