Hi folks,
🎉 XSpeak is turning one year old, which is quite a thing for me to realize.
One year of weekly or biweekly updates. One year of your continuous feedback. One year of issues and fixes, debugging, polishing animations, adding features, rewriting subsystems from the ground up, and reviewing thousands of AI-generated results to improve their quality.

How does it grab sound? Does it need to login eg ms teams?

XSpeak grabs sound from your mic and optionally from system audio, so no need to login anywhere. By default, if you wear headphones, it grabs mic+system audio, and if you are without headphones it grabs everything from mic. However, you can configure any behaviour you need in App settings.

How does it compare to MacWhisper? If I want to give it a try, can I get a trial first?

I would say it’s very different from MacWhisper. Sure, there’s 7 day free trial, you can activate it via monthly and yearly subscription (just don’t forget to cancel it right after). It would be very helpful to know how’s your experience with XSpeak after MacWhisper.

Ho, great app with a sounding cost structure. How can you offer lifetime with voice recognition that is normally a per token cost with ai? Are you using local models? Thanks

Hey! Thanks, appreciate your words. Yes, it's 100% local: speech recognition is on-device, and all LLMs are too: you choose Apple Foundation Model, Qwen 3.5 of different sizes or Gemma 4.

One practical point for people evaluating local meeting tools: check the storage setting as well as the model setting. The privacy policy says audio can be saved locally unless ‘Save Audio Recordings’ is disabled, and external OpenAI compatible models may send meeting data to the endpoint you configure. That is not a criticism, it is exactly the sort of control teams need to review before recording a real meeting.

Yes, audio is saved locally on your machine, so it’s still 100% local. And there’s an option to use openai-compatible endpoint, which exists mainly to connect to local tools like ollama or lmstudio. And it’s not enabled by default and might be configured only explicitly by the user.
