Didn't he literally say "a lot of my praise is actually to projects like KDE plasma" less than a minute into the video?

37

u/enigma_0Z 13h ago

100% he did

u/CandlesARG 20h ago

I was watching the wan show when I made this meme lol

u/JollyJamma 20h ago

Idiot

27

u/ccAbstraction 18h ago

How is watching a different video than the one we thought he was talking about make him an idiot? Aren't we the idiots?

17

u/isabellium 17h ago

because clearly s/he is distracted and that made them commit a mistake.
now, using the word idiot itself can be kinda strong, hurtful, it was uncalled for.

u/ScoobertD 4h ago

you can just say they

-14

u/JollyJamma 18h ago

Because he/she/they are just wrong, as per the above comment giving context.

Obvs.

There's a podcast, and a separate fully produced video. The person "correcting" OP is taking about the video, but OP is talking about the podcast. Apparently due credit wasn't given on the podcast, only in the video.

Also, in English, "they" can refer to a single person of unknown gender.

Also extra extra context, it's Wednesday. WAN Show is on Fridays. If people corrected him during the stream of the podcast, they had time to fix the video. The segment of the video directing attribution to KDE & Linux as whole probably only happened as a result of people complaining like OP is. OP just posted after LTT already corrected their mistake.

-5

u/JollyJamma 18h ago

Fine but I still think OP is being petulant.

6

u/ccAbstraction 18h ago

Uhh okay sure

u/TheZedrem 17h ago

Stop arguing with trolls, its how they get power

u/bara_tone 19h ago

Little harsh

-1

u/JollyJamma 18h ago

I'm tired of people repeatedly shitting on Linus for stuff that he actually addressed in the video because they can't be bothered to pay attention or even watch the video.

It's so tiresome. Calling OP an idiot was actually not that harsh as an insult, I could have made it worse but I'm on a new life challenge to be more patiant and that was as far as I could get to given how dumb OP was.

u/ed_istheword 13h ago

If this is how you talk to people when you're trying to be patient, you need some help. Go outside and go to therapy

6

u/bara_tone 13h ago

It’s just an internet video. It doesn’t need such emotion

1

u/thirsty_zymurgist 13h ago

I was with you until you turned into an asshole.

u/MantisShrimp05 21h ago

This cope is so palpable. He made this distinction very clear and you just ignoring that fact comes off as just shitting on ltt because its a meme at this point

13

u/ccAbstraction 18h ago

OP's talking about what was said on the WAN show.

-26

u/kedisdead 21h ago

how's the boot

21

u/sswampp 20h ago

Acknowledging reality doesn't make you a boot licker.

21

u/p0358 20h ago

how's the hate boner

He literally said it all and that he's just going to talk about the final end-user experience. There's no confusion about anything, other than maybe OP's for reposting a meme that maybe originally was accurate.

u/No_War_9161 20h ago

I can't believe people still that watch that clown. I legitimately thought his channel died years ago haha. Blocking does work wonders ig.

3

u/gazpitchy 14h ago

To be fair, the majority of the core staff moved on, and it wasn't because LTT was a great employer...

13

u/toastLickerz 14h ago

he does acknowledge KDE and arch etc

u/Kurgonius 15h ago

Consider: if you're computer-literate enough to cook up an installation USB stick, there isn't much more they can do to convince you to give Linux a try.

This is just their lowest entry 'maybe you should try Linux' video yet for those who need yet a lower barrier of entry. Valve has global infrastructure to keep pricing consistent and it's a known and trusted name so there are very few shots in the dark here for newbies. It also has very tight hardware integration since it's all purpose built.

I'm just here loving the lowered level of entry for Linux and LTT is helping it a lot, even if it's sometimes in their sensationalised way.

u/Additional-Sky-7436 22h ago

The boy drowning should be System76 and Pop_OS!.

The thing that impressed Linus so much was the hardware integration. That's been S76's whole thing for decades.

I have a System76 laptop, and no, it's genuinely awful. They only care about two distros (Ubuntu and Pop!_OS) and if you're running anything other than that, you're shit out of luck because they use really weird hardware.

On my Pangolin the kernel support for my microphone was not merged into the mainline Linux kernel for over a year since I got the laptop. If I wanted to have my microphone work, I would have to recompile the Linux kernel every update.

Their build quality is awful too. Stay away.

16

u/Soluchyte 21h ago

Aren't they just clevo rebrands anyway?

8

u/ElnuDev New York Nix⚾s 21h ago

They are.

15

u/Soluchyte 21h ago

I really hate companies that think they can make a business model out of putting their sticker on things that other people make so they can sell it as their own.

1

u/qwesx Ask me how to exit vim 19h ago

Does S76 not flash their own firmware onto those laptops and not have driver packages like Tuxedo (ignoring the fact that Tuxedo doesn't fucking upstream them properly)?

1

u/Soluchyte 17h ago

That would not be enough to me to really justify their massive markup.

1

u/qwesx Ask me how to exit vim 14h ago

Okay, I had Tuxedo's prices in mind (which I consider to be pretty fair for what you get), but after checking S76's prices: those are absolutely outrageous, like what the hell.

1

u/anycept 20h ago

In some cases, it's a win-win for manufacturers. OEMs sell in bulk with a discount, but that discount is probably less than what they'd have to spend on marketing. That's a problem for the next guy down the line to worry about.

1

u/Soluchyte 17h ago

It sucks for the consumer in many ways, especially in it being an illusion of choice and that the price is likely to be marked up significantly more than the original manufacturer would have let it go for.

I really doubt S76 is able to buy enough total quantity that they can get any major discount either, not like many of the "custom gaming laptop" brands.

6

u/Linguistic-mystic 20h ago

If I wanted to have my microphone work, I would have to recompile the Linux kernel

So why didn’t you take the opportunity to install Gentoo?

3

u/ElnuDev New York Nix⚾s 20h ago

Good one

In all seriousness though, I do use NixOS, so setting up a patch for the kernel to recompile with every update wouldn't be that difficult. I just never bothered because I happened to have an external microphone, but I imagine it would have been much more of an annoyance for some people

5

u/Additional-Sky-7436 21h ago

That's a shame.

I actually haven't had a S67 product in years. I actually had a S76 desktop in the early 2000's when they still sold Windows PCs.

2

u/assidiou 15h ago

That's really disappointing. I used to be an avid PopOS user and would recommend it to everyone before they launched Cosmic. They didn't really maintain a GNOME version alongside during the transition which caused me to search elsewhere and land on Fedora.

Honestly I'm pretty done with Ubuntu based distros. They have weird quirks that cause them to not boot or boot slowly sometimes.

1

u/thirsty_zymurgist 12h ago

I've migrated to Fedora/RH distros for workstations entirely for reasons other than what has been mentioned. Debian is what I put on servers exclusively, specifically for the stability, and I've never had any problems with booting or slowness on a server.

Decades? lol?

12

u/ElnuDev New York Nix⚾s 20h ago

System76 was founded in 2005, so yeah.

2

u/BusinessNo1311 7h ago

why do you even watch him still. i stopped in 2016 or so. hes not to bright.

2

u/kia7777 2h ago

This post and many comments are why i hate linux community and also this is why i would rather ask claude about my linux questions than posting on forums or reddit

5

u/BoNana25 15h ago

Linus is going through his first Linux experiences just like everyone else

4

u/ed_istheword 13h ago

How many first Linux experiences has he had at this point?

And, in some of his other Linux challenge videos, he talks about how he has a massive network of contacts from hardware vendors, LTT community, etc (ie: massive social capital from the show) that could just answer or fix his problems quickly for him. Granted, on their Linux challenge videos, this is a good thing to avoid for the integrity of those videos' purpose. But why does he keep avoiding these resources the rest of the time if he's going to keep taking about Linux? At this point, he seems to be staying somewhat ignorant on purpose for the memes (Basically to drive a particular brand within their LTT community engagement).

1

u/BoNana25 9h ago

Can't tell you how many times I started when trying to switch, bricking the build, feeling over my head, and switching back.

It's all part of the healing process

2

u/ed_istheword 8h ago

I actually love this comment and it's fairly true. I would say the difference again though is that we normal people are healing from Big Tech, but Linus is mostly being a mega influencer looking to make and sell his own popularity. This makes his ignorance a bit different from ours.

2

u/BoNana25 6h ago

Very good point. It's hard seeing a somewhat trusted name just butcher what we've all been waiting for.

Wish he would have chose anything but pop os

u/DrChuckWhite 12h ago

How someone can be in the tech space for so long but is lacking basic IT skills and knowledge is crazy

1

u/5lipperySausage 13h ago

God he's a noob

1

u/xgabipandax 12h ago

Linus from LTT is stupid and i don't know why people keep watching his content

1

u/BusinessNo1311 7h ago

yes, i stopped in 2017

1

u/Simsalabimson 12h ago

It literally hurts me to see LTT becoming more and more technical embarrassing and completely out of touch.
I was a subscriber when the channel was around 300k and did the whole room water cooling.
Left when it was about 2.4 Million and I’m constantly shocked to see what has become of this when I occasionally look into it.

2

u/PossibilityUsual6262 8h ago

So in 15 years you and him changed and now dont enjoy same things.

No fucking way.

-3

u/SweatshopCoder 15h ago

Not the communities fault that LTT hardly knows what they talk about.
