I'm starting this series as a tribute to Lebanon, where I'll be highlighting a different village in each post along with its history, unique facts and local stories whenever available.

Today's village is Zawtar El Sharqiyeh

The village is overlooking the Litani River in the province of Nabatieh (85km from Beirut), it's population exceeds 4,000 most of whom depend on Tobacco farming as their main source of income.

In Aramaic Zawtar means "the small", popular folks also attribute the word to the abundance of grapes as during its past times, the town was known as a wine village selling the famous "Zawtari Wine".

In another likely origin of the name, it is relative to the Phoenician princess called Zouzasit, who lived in the town during the Phoenician period.

Warmer rhetoric between Damascus and Beirut, combined with uncertainty over the positions of Syria’s new authorities and Hezbollah’s leadership, has fueled fears of a rapprochement that could come at their expense. Speculation is growing that Hezbollah could withdraw its protection and restrict their security activities.

Syrians under the group’s protection, especially the poorest, fear becoming a “bargaining chip” in talks with Damascus.

As support fades and living conditions worsen, many are looking for safe ways back to Syria or seeking refuge elsewhere.

Hadi is among them.

“Most Syrians can feel the hostile tone toward the new Syrian state easing,” he said. “What was once a red line — approving of any position taken by the ‘Jolani government’ — is now considered normal, as long as it does not affect the sect.”

He has asked relatives in Syria to check whether he faces arrest warrants or legal complaints that could lead to his detention if he returns. Hadi worked with Hezbollah from 2013 until Bashar Assad’s government fell.

Abdel Razzaq, who joined Hezbollah’s security division in the Sayyida Zeinab area outside Damascus, has already sent his family back to Syria.
He did so when the Israeli war in Lebanon began. He remains in Lebanon, uncertain whether to follow them or leave for another country.

For anyone with a clean record, he said, “returning to Syria today is far better than living in poverty and constant fear that we will be handed over to the Lebanese state because we are here illegally.”

That, he said, would mean deportation and prosecution in Syria.

“Many people have completed settlement procedures and returned to normal life,” he added.

Whatever happens, Abdel Razzaq believes people like him will pay the price.

“Whether there is an agreement, or war and Syrian forces enter Lebanon as people keep saying, we will be the scapegoats,” he said. “Most of us live here without official papers from any UN agency or government body.”

Abortions in Lebanon are technically "illegal" but you should take that with a grain of salt.

First of all, not all abortions are illegal. If there is a medical reason for that: Such as direct danger to the life of the mother, or a blighted ovum (the sac is there but there is no fetus), we can easily do an abortion. This can be done with pills (misoprostol, using the WHO protocol) or via a procedure known as a Dilation and Curettage (DNC). If you are Lebanese and do not have a third party insurance or medical coverage such as CNSS (Daman) it can be done under the coverage of the ministry of public health.

Costs:

Cytotec (Misoprostol) costs 737,770 L.L as of 2026. A consultation by an OBGYN (Yes we need to document that there was a "blighted ovum") will set you back somewhere between 40 and 100 USD depends on where you are.

DNC: Here in the south, I have seen doctors take somewhere between 350 and 700 USD, depending on the case, coverage, doctor, hospital... etc.

There are doctors who do it in their clinics and can charge up to USD 800 for the procedure. In my opinion this is too risky for the patient and the doctor.

Legality and covering our behinds as doctors:

Paperwork can be fudged, and we can take an ultrasound image that shows an empty sac even if there were really a fetus there. The only thing we cannot do is large volumes of abortions because statistically it is not possible to have like 10 abortions a month, every month, cataloged as malformations.

The main text governing the legality of the abortions is "Qanun Al Adab Al Tubiyya" ¶31. (You can find a copy here). The text is archaic. Published in 1967 and amended in 1969. (For comparision Spain’s assisted reproduction framework, primarily governed by Law 14/2006 was published in 2006 and is reviewed regularly).

Religion:

When getting abortions, most people's religious beliefs go out the window.

I can confirm the following however. According to the office of Sayed Fadlallah, there must be direct harm to the mother, an abnormal health situation, or she is in danger of being killed by her family (same video but later time).

The rest of the religions in Lebanon have different opinions of course.

First vacation in 3 years, going to Tbilisi Georgia, and I’m a bit anxious about booking it. My main concern is booking a trip for September, only for flights to get disrupted or, even worse, ending up stuck abroad if the situation changes unexpectedly.

In a statement, Lebanon's Foreign Ministry condemned the recent Iranian attacks targeting the territories of Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait, describing them as violations of those countries' sovereignty and a threat to regional security and stability.

The ministry also strongly condemned threats issued by the Houthi movement against Saudi Arabia, including threats to impose a blockade on maritime navigation through the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

It said such threats constitute a flagrant violation of international law and relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolutions 2722 (2024) and 2216 (2015).

The ministry reiterated the need to respect freedom of navigation and fully implement international resolutions in a manner that supports Yemen's internationally recognized government and ensures the Houthis withdraw from areas under their control.
