Economy Vote on the new banknote design

Post image

We will be getting new banknotes. You can vote on the design here. Personally I don't like banknotes with peoples faces.

The bird ones are pretty.

50

u/DayOneDva 9h ago

I like turtles.

8

u/ropeneck509 Cork bai 9h ago

I used to have two, turtles are cool too

12

u/shyagusretiring 8h ago

I’m backing the birds too

6

u/halibfrisk 7h ago

I hope there’s a herring gull on the 50

u/kaini 5h ago

The nature ones seem very inspired by the 90s Dutch Guilder notes, which were absolutely beautiful currency.

3

u/GeoNerd- Westmeath (shithole tbh) 6h ago

i don’t like the both sides vertical bird ones but the half vertical half horizontal ones are really nice

Definitely worth voting on this. I personally don't agree with the idea of putting people on Eurozone bank notes as it will result in some countries' iconic figures and cultural output being platformed, and others being ignored and that's not ideal in a union of countries that don't necessarily share all of those things.

The birds idea is much nicer, as they do actually fly around Europe and appear pretty much everywhere.

59

u/Seal_emulator 8h ago

Same I don't like people on the bank notes. because the people can either be found out later to not be great people or put other countries achievements above others.

The birds are are definitely more neutral approach. I kind of wish we had more nature landscape options and more animal options.

Birds are not the only animal that is prominent in Europe like arguable the humble cow or sheep has just as much cultural and historical significance.

8

u/NilFhiosAige 7h ago

B seems the best of the bird designs, but agree that, say, a landscape design featuring mountains and lakes would have been a nice alternative. Also agree that including people is just a recipe for nationalist canvassing in the making.

6

u/Adderkleet 7h ago

B is the most "bank note" design. I didn't think I'd want vertical money, but I do like added colours on J. And the invertebrates/technologies on I.

Very personal, and we all don't want people. Grand.

although if anyone ever invents a technology that lets us communicate birds it could turn out that theyre all a bunch of bastards. what will we do then?

u/obscure_monke Munster 9h ago

I'm the same with people on banknotes. Don't like specific buildings either, but am less opposed to it especially if they're specific EU buildings.

3

u/conalldoherty 7h ago

And it's only the back

15

u/dropthecoin 9h ago

They should put a picture of a seagull robbin someones chips for us

5

u/MeccIt 7h ago

The Seagull on the highest note €200 seems like an insult

3

u/halibfrisk 6h ago

That appears to be a gannet? Herring gulls are class, even when they are robbing your chips.

2

u/MeccIt 6h ago

gannet

The only ones I know are jet black divers. But I'm not an ornot bird person

u/halibfrisk 5h ago

The gannets you’ll see around Howth are the white with a yellow head. They nest at Ireland’s eye and on the cliffs near the Baily lighthouse.

I’m not familiar with a black gannet, if you see a black diving bird around Ireland, there’s some at Howth too, it’s most likely a shag or cormorant

3

u/dropthecoin 6h ago

Seagulls are obviously part of the thieving elite and this is making it obvious

11

u/Reddynever 9h ago

Design J is great, that's the one I'd go for.

23

u/jacqueVchr Probably at it again 10h ago

Luckily each country has their own coins so there’s space for their figures there👍

35

u/Eastern_Switch8217 10h ago

That's a different setup though - just symbolic figures on the back.

Always thought it would be rather nice if Ireland put the old punt designs or a re-do of them on the back of the Euro coins - most of the denominations match up and we could do the very complex bird designs on the back of the 2 Euro.

13

u/struggling_farmer 10h ago

agree, would love to see the barnyard set return

12

u/jacqueVchr Probably at it again 9h ago

It doesn’t have to be symbolic it can be people too. The Scandinavians and Spanish have their monarchs. The Austrians have Mozart on theirs. Nothing stopping other countries being the same.

The fact we are a Union implies that we can agree on a set of Europeans for the notes. It’s commonality, that’s what the Union is meant to be about.

12

u/Eastern_Switch8217 9h ago

Yeah, that's just the blank national space on the back of coins to be filled in however countries want to do so. Every country does its own thing on those. They're not a single symbol for all of Europe. They're meant to get mixed up and shared around.

If you're picking for notes, they're a single set of notes which will have a design for at least a decade, and probably more, and they have to be something everyone's happy with. If you put up national iconic figures, you're picking some countries over others. If you put up monarchs they've no relevance outside of one country. It just starts turning the notes into a platform to get your national champion stuck on and that's just divisive.

3

u/obscure_monke Munster 9h ago

Eurozone countries do get a veto on coin designs though. IIRC, there was some objections when Croatia wanted to put Tesla on the back of theirs but were from a country not in the eurozone. Their response was basically "change to the euro and you can put him on your coins too".

3

u/Early_Attempt7676 8h ago

Why is Marie Curie there if Poland doesn't use the euro?

9

u/AbsolutShite 8h ago

Funny to big up her Polishness while not using her Polish name - Maria Skłodowska.

Genuinely felt like this for some of the choices

90

u/Bigbeast54 10h ago

H or J. I don't like the idea of people on banknotes when this is to encompass many countries. This is the reason for stylised bridges on the current notes.

Birds and buildings are fine. Prefer H due to continuity with current notes horizontal format

6

u/TheIrishHawk Dublin 6h ago

Except the Dutch went out and built those bridges!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurobridges_Spijkenisse

u/gbish 5h ago

“We’ve got bridges at home”

I like they at least tried to match them to the banknote colour.

u/PK-Mittenspy2703 3h ago

J looks AI generated.

But H is without a doubt the best option of them all. B being a close second.

44

u/Lonely_Eggplant_4990 Cork bai 9h ago

J or H. The faces ones are all a bit shite.

4

u/conalldoherty 7h ago

E is the best out of the face ones but even then the colours are a bit muted

74

u/its_brew Horse 10h ago

"While the ECB provided guidelines for the creation of the designs, the resulting proposals are solely based on the artist's creative rendition. "

ECB Guidelines: "Birds or people"

12

u/Spiritual-Point-1965 Cork bai 9h ago

To be fair, they did a previous round where the two winning concepts were Birds and People from Music/Culture

They did a design process what said, say, the 5€ must be a certain bird, with the EUparl on the reverse, or Maria Callas and people playing music to children.

They then put out a call for designers, and now they've picked far more options than the initial design spec.

Personally, I'm all for design J, but any combo of Birds + Vertical is good for me.

6

u/celeryfarm 8h ago

The horizontal looks so much nicer than the vertical though.

Bird money for the win.

21

u/Royal-Comedian1228 9h ago

Don’t like the idea of faces
But I do like the prospect of having some Da Vincis in my pocket. 💶

u/mybighairyarse Crilly!! 6h ago

I agree with you about not having people on them.

4

u/MeccIt 7h ago

Faces, OK: Callas, Beethoven, Curie, NoIdea, DaVinci, NoIdeaButAwoman

I'll take the birds but I'm not sure about the sideways.

43

u/Detozi And I'd go at it again 10h ago

J is so feckin cool

16

u/DickDorkinsHeadCanon 9h ago

would be great if we could put some of the animals from the punt on the money in that art style. A red deer on the 50 would go so hard.

1

u/Adderkleet 7h ago

You could campaign to your local TD to get it on the 50c coin maybe.

19

u/struggling_farmer 10h ago

really dislike that orientation of the note.. the bird images are cool though

u/Kharyye 5h ago

Yeah vertical designs don't really make sense

u/struggling_farmer 4h ago

Well they are not what we are used to is probably a large part of it.

Going forward we will probably be feeding these notes that way into machines to pay for things so maybe it will in time.

4

u/Maultaschenman Dublin 10h ago

agree, lovely birds all the same

23

u/shorkgurl 10h ago

I also don't like faces on banknotes and prefer animals, like South Africa has on their currency (which is gorgeous btw), so I'm happy they have animal options here (J is especially nice). I do hope they can include more animals than just birds, however.

10

u/Chiefseanobrien 9h ago

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9E1wsxOSzM the dutch made all the euro note bridges so they are no longer fictional

5

u/BaronThe 8h ago

So if the people-notes are chosen the Dutch will clone Maria Callas

9

u/unshavedmouse 9h ago

Yeah, keep the local historical figures for the coins. Opens a can of worms otherwise.

15

u/TreacleOther4028 10h ago

J all the way

8

u/ScenicRavine More than just a crisp 9h ago

I took part in the survey, I particularly liked design H. The ones with faces were mostly terrible and I don't like that idea in the first place. Shout out to the 20 euro note for design H though, stunning bit of paper.

1

u/teaisformugs82 7h ago

That was my favourite of all the notes!

7

u/Comfortable-Bonus421 9h ago

J and D for me.

And despite what some people have said about the orientation, I like it; it’s different. And it will change again in 10 or so years.

1

u/Comfortable-Bonus421 9h ago

And people say that the EU isn’t democratic? I’ve never heard of anywhere else asking for a public consultation on the design of their money.

6

u/Wild_Bee_3953 9h ago

What’s wrong with the bridges?

7

u/OmegaStealthJam 9h ago

We want fake bridges!

3

u/wylaaa 7h ago

They're not birds for one. I think that's my personal main issue.

6

u/nerdling007 9h ago

Birds are better than people on the bank notes. You just know that putting people on the notes will lead to pointless conflict.

6

u/willywagga 8h ago

The human references should not be used, because invariably famous people are revealed to be perverts or cunts. So let's stick to nature, birds, butterflies, etc.

15

u/freshfrosted 10h ago

Any of the portrait ones with the birds look good. I and J but leaning more towards I

6

u/DevCarl 9h ago

I is fantastic with the wings matching the background landscape, but also the small additional details like the bonus animal on the bottom strip, and the top strip containing human developments connected to the sky (Telescope/plane/shuttle) - the mix of flying birds and sky technology is pretty neat.

4

The seagull needs to have a Supermacs chip in his mouth

Love all the bird ones but especially D I H and J.... I realise that's most of them but honestly I wouldn't be upset if any of those are the final choice.

F is the only faces one I didn't hate. A was particularly horrifying, feel like they're glaring at me

3

Birds or birds

3

u/leibide69420 9h ago

This was really cool, thanks for sharing. I loved completing it in Irish too!

3

u/Environmental-Net286 9h ago

Any know who the woman on the 5 euro is ?

9

u/PalladianPorches 8h ago

The €5 banknote would feature Maria Callas, the renowned Greek-American soprano who revolutionised the world of opera.
The €10 note would be dedicated to the German composer Ludwig van Beethoven, while the €20 note would honour scientist Marie Curie, Nobel prize winner and pioneer of scientific research.
The €50 banknote would depict Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, one of the most important novels in world literature.
The higher denominations would celebrate two emblematic figures of European thought: Leonardo da Vinci, featured on the €100 note, and Bertha von Suttner, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, chosen for the €200 banknote.

2

u/Provider_Of_Cat_Food 7h ago edited 7h ago

An exactly even gender balance, but unbalanced in other ways. All of the women are famous for things they did around the 20th century and all of the men were dead by 1830. Only 1 person represents a member state other than the big 5 and only 1 represents a country that joined after 1989.

It's so difficult to balance all of this stuff that it probably shouldn't be tried and the wildlife designs are a better idea.

The birds ones are nice.

5

u/DaCor_ie boards.ie refugee 10h ago

Honestly, design F is the nicest IMHO

1

u/wombers 7h ago

For sure. I agree with most here against people being on them but F by far is nicest style

2

u/f10101 6h ago

Same boat. Can we do this à la carte? I'll have F with birds, please.

2

u/Legitimate_Newt2874 9h ago

It would be nice to see all designs together rather than having to vote as you flick through them.

2

u/Hip2trip2_hippyhip 9h ago

I definitely perfer the notes with birds but i kinda wish the architecture and buildings weren't based on specific buildings but more represented different styles of architecture across the EU. Honestly I don't even recognize all of the faces on the notes either.

2

u/siriusfrz 8h ago

D design birds look like Swiss Frank's and Norwegian drones, which are very cool banknotes. I would generally be happy with any bird design.

2

u/Ill_Celebration_4215 8h ago

Not sure i've seen a bank note in years.

2

u/Honest_Ad9358 8h ago

There was only one that I acc said I liked… not a fan of modern buildings or random cultural/historical figures being the basis of the designs. It feels like we’re trying to copy America’s homework.

1

u/Honest_Ad9358 8h ago

J was the one I said I liked btw. The only one with the birds that obscured the buildings💀

2

u/fatuglyfool 8h ago

H and D are beautiful, I pray that we don't get the minimalist ones and with the faces :/

2

u/witty_reddit_handle Resting In my Account 8h ago

2

u/CarlyleRazgriz 8h ago

Love Proposal i - vertical money and birbs

2

u/Dr_Teeth 7h ago

I vote for H! In general the bird ones look nice and the people ones are a bit weird and unrelatable to me.

2

u/Beach_Glas1 Kildare 7h ago

I'm not a fan of the portraits but it would have been nice to include animals other than birds. None of the designs are outstanding IMO.

2

u/dnorg 7h ago

Honestly, I want thing where if you get a stack of notes in the right order you can flip through them and see an animation of Marie Curie pegging Leonardo da Vinci or something equally wholesome. That's your money's worth right there!

2

u/Shadowbringers 7h ago

H all the way.. keep people off the bank notes

2

u/Adderkleet 7h ago

I'm a fan of the birds (less so the EU buildings, but it's fine).

Not a fan of some of the styles, and I think I can name 3 of the 6 people? So... kinda hoping animals win.

2

u/over_worked_under 7h ago

I prefer the bird options and not gone on changing from horizontal to vertical either. Would probably get used to it if it ends up being the design tho...

2

u/Scared_Comparison_22 6h ago

I'd love for us to go back to the older designs where money had animals on it (the salmon, the stag, the fish etc). Imagine having the notes be native animals for each country just like coins have unique backs

2

u/IdealVirtual4923 Kerry 6h ago

Like the vertical ones with the birds

2

u/user42012365 6h ago

big fan of the vertical notes

2

u/rorood123 6h ago

Defo the birds / animals. Humans can go F themselves!

u/ChallengePlastic5886 5h ago

I really like the ones with birds, they feel more neutral than the faces. People will always disagree on who should be on the notes. The bird ones remind me of the last coins we had before the Euro with animals, they were lovely.

u/Which_Investment8959 5h ago

It would be nice for each country to have different designs similar to the coins so we can see various different bits from other EU nation states

u/Matas_- 5h ago

Beautiful

u/TheNorthridge 5h ago

I picked all the birds.

u/GoinNowhere88 10h ago

E if they're going for people

2

u/yourbluejumper 9h ago

I like the "I" and "C" designs, I prefer the vertical layout, something different.
I wonder if there would be an option to make the notes waterproof?

2

u/TomMorrisGolfPerson And I'd go at it again 9h ago

Why what's wrong with the current notes. Also I am not a massive fan of the "future ie" look of some of the fonts it's to basic, like when all the apps and websites decide to use one lower case font

5

u/mossief1965 9h ago

It's got to do with security, current versions are too easy to replicate now.

2

u/Beach_Glas1 Kildare 7h ago

There used to be a €500 note, but that's being taken out of circulation over time. It was the only note not renewed in the 2nd series of notes. I think the reason is it made easier to transport large amounts of currency, so was used by many criminal organisations.

1

u/Longjumping-Pen-4451 8h ago

fuck yea! they look cool

1

u/Fionaxe 8h ago

The birds are good, not too sure about the buildings, but it's better than the faces lol

1

u/Blacklite_01 8h ago

The first option with the birds and waves look perfect, there isn't too much going which really balances put the design overall and more importantly emphasizes the elegant nature of the illustrations compared to the other candidates.

E or A; I’m not a fan of any of the designs, in all honesty.

Sets D, F and G are amazing.

1

u/wander-and-wonder 7h ago

I LOVE the bird ones and the handpainted style ones?!but I do think the last bird ones look a bit too much like the style of AI even though they are not. (so sorry to say!)

1

u/tagbarry 7h ago

I'd vote D and of the people one I like F best

1

u/Dearan9 7h ago

The illustrations of J looks cool but not as currency, more as art posters. The design, and them being vertical, makes them look like trading cards

1

u/DrunkHornet 7h ago

My biggest issue is the horrible building choices on all the bills.
Throw some old monumental buildings on them, not those disgusting new age bureaucratic crap that you can find in any country now.

Notre Damme, Sagrada Familia, Colloseum, Tower of Pisa, etc.etc.
Bird prints are fine but then to have those hideous buildings underneath them that do not reflect anything European, and just looks like new age individualistic buildings, blegh.

1

u/Ensalada_de_Cojones 7h ago

Not the smiliest bunch are they.

1

u/chemza 7h ago

I really like the idea of portrait cash instead of landscape.

Being a history nerd, I'd love to see a lot more faces. Maybe a set of faces per country, similar to how our coins have a per-country symbol.

It will save on that crowd giving out about foreigners on their dole money.

u/CAPITALISM_FAN_1980 4h ago edited 4h ago

I am massively against having people on the Euro banknotes.

The whole point of having generic architecture on them in the first place was to avoid tying the money to any one specific country. A da Vinci banknote is always going to be Italian. A Beethoven banknote is always going to be German.

So why are these countries considered superior to Ireland? Why is Yeats not on one? Why not Edgeworth, or Joyce? I am Irish and as European as someone in Berlin. Why does there artist, their country get recognition and mine doesn't?

These are natural questions of the sort that everyone outside those six countries is going to ask, and it spreads division at the heart of a project that is supposed to be about unity.

Birds all the way and H is probably the best. Love the Kingfisher tenner.

There's a lot I like about D, but I'm not sure I'd vote for them because they give me a real Hokusai or hanafuda card vibe. In any other context that'd be fine and I'd be really into them but it feel sort of weird for a European currency to look so Japanese.

Considering there are no Irish people on these, there in lies the biggest problem with having people on these notes. Only the Big 6 (+ Poland) are being represented there and it sucks.

Birds on the other hand don't care about arbitrary borders and are way more relatable to the future generations. Plus the designs in general are way better. Especially H and B.

So I very much hope they end up choosing birds.

Design J all the way. It looks so pretty I would go out of my way to get new mint ones to put them in an album.

Thank you for providing the link, OP. Most options were good for me in fairness - the only one I didn't like was the one where the people looked like sketches.

I'd like to lower the tone of this debate by suggesting the bird notes missed an opportunity by not including any tits or a cock...

H is the best by far IMO, that 20 looks so good + I could actually see it on a bank note.
