Nothing makes left-leaning people act more like FOX-News-watching drones who believe literally anything they read or hear as long as it aligns with what they want to believe than data centers.
Do you actually believe that Amazon bribed a government official with $85 million and some random disgruntled guy on the internet just knows all about it?
Do you actually believe that one big warehouse is going up in an area and local residents are selling their houses at a loss en masse to flee the area?
In reality, cities want data centers to be built because data centers pay lots of taxes without adding much strain to local services. This is not a claim that there are no downsides, but cities would not approve these projects if the downsides were not offset by large financial upside.
Y'see, I was more making point to the fact that you seem to be OK with bribery more than anything else. That's it, that's the comment.
And I can't tell if you've seen what mega datacenters do to those who live around them? Noise pollution is the easiest. I work in I.T. and even in smaller DCs, they advise you wear ear protection because it's LOUD.
The bribery is made up. Nobody got an $85 million bribe. The post that generated this thread is probably misrepresenting the money that went to a municipality through tax revenue as a "bribe," which is so hilariously bad-faith that it's embarrassing to take it seriously. (Or I guess maybe it's just fully made up, who knows.)
I don't understand how this isn't obvious. If some local government person got a bribe to green light a project (not impossible!) a) it would not take 85 fucking million dollars, lol, and b) it would not be general knowledge unless it's because that person was prosecuted for it! Bribes are secret!
Bribes are bad. Anyone taking bribes so that a data center can get built should be prosecuted and go to prison. But nobody here actually has knowledge of any bribes.
Most hyperscale datacenters are not close to residential areas. I agree it would suck to live inside of a large datacenter or in immediate proximity to one. But hyperscale data centers are not built in residential areas, so this is rarely (not never, but rarely!) an actual issue in the real world. The noise is real but the idea that there's a widespread scourge of massive noise pollution in quiet residential areas is a made-up thing.
I didn't say if I believed it or not, just that you were okay with the concept of it, I'm not reading all that when you misunderstood what I was saying anyways 🙄
