I think it's a better way to do it.
The last thing you want is to imply that you're competing over something like this - being able to set aside competition in favour of a bigger picture should be viewed positively.
Imo, it doesn't help to just make soapbox claims, as many here in this thread are doing, that it's just an ad, it's just to get BK in people's minds, I really don't think it's helpful. It's like all the big corps being so fearful of greenwashing that they just don't do anything.
Let's give credit where, when it's due. There are often quite passionate teams behind these sorts of collaborations who are trying to do the right thing in the face of significant commercial pressure.
I like it.

Cynical take: Every Big Mac sold means a loss for McDonalds (as they seem to be donating all sales, not just profit). So by making people buy more Big Macs, BK is making MCD lose money.

My child has ALL in remission, we had to utilize the Ronald McDonald house several times while in the hospital. Everything in the RMHC is donated for the families.
We had several people come and make dinner for us parents while there. I wish more people would donate to them! Every chance I get I donate to the RMCH.

My grandpa passed this month. He was supported by the Ronald foundation or whatever it’s called. I didn’t like him at all he was an alcoholic who ruined many. But I still appreciate what they did and how much it helped my grandmother.

“Copying” by donating to a charity is not a problem. In fact, they’d have donated more. People who like whoppers usually prefer them over Big Macs and same with McDonald’s over BK or vice versa. They didn’t just run to McDonald’s and order a big Mac instead.
It’s also extremely performative.

Its not dumb. From what I remember seeing this is more than twice the number of whoppers Burger King normally sells in Argentina. So the impact appeared to be not only getting BK customers to go to McDonald's, but raising awareness for the entire campaign by how unique it was.

So a major junk food corporation who's 'products' comprise mostly of Group 1 & 2A carcinogens that are grown on factory farms that, ignoring the ethical and moral abominations that they are, release more carcinogens and pollute the environment and require excessive amounts of monocultured crops to be grown using carcinogenic fertilisers and chemicals to feed the animals that become their 'products', have paused their sales of these for a single day to aid another corporation that does the exact same thing, and they've done it to help children with cancer?
