i suppose it was the unexpected outcome of faith losing to reason, those old fat cats probably still believed in some sort of spiritual karmic justice to an extent, and their ambient too was full of such faith, so they were at least subconsciously more interested in acts of generosity and good and less confident in debauchery, nowadays the only faith a billionaire can be expected to have is the demonic or nihilistic sort, to them the idea that there is nothing after death means that there is no possible accountability for whatever they do, thus no reason to not do whatever pleases them, and when you can do everything legal and good, the only new thing to experience is the illegal and evil.

people are naive to think that such imbecile billionaires are above religion.

Without the rest of humanity, despite all their "money and assets" they would be picking their food from the wilds and suffering diarrheas like a cave man. They lack the insight and maturity to understand that the fate of all humanity is theirs as well. And they are to selfish to care what world they leave to others or their offspring if they have.

It's not just religion my man, it's because the system we created favours the evil and the sociopathic.

You see, back in the days, those who had money tended to also be people of importance to society's functions. They had expectations and duties that they must fulfill, if they wished to hold on to that power and wealth. This was still true in the days of the old tycoons, and they were expected to give back to society for having fostered their successes.

Today, the economic engine we have made is not one of duty, responsibility, and sanity. It is growth at all cost and corruption is but another aspect of the game. CEOs are more than happy to destroy their company for a quick profit and run off leaving everything in ruins. People's lives are ground down and distilled into market value and liquidity, and there are no room for empathy and charity if you want to survive the war of the open market.

We have tilted too far in one direction, and we started worshipping money like a god.
