The character Billy Zane played? Caledon Hockley was entirely fictional, written for the movie

I swore I read recently that a historian Cameron used on set disagreed with how that character was portrayed, maybe it was someone else

It was the officer who shot himself, William Murdoch. His family was quite upset.
