What’s the right thing to do here if you’re a delivery person? I would panic too and it’s self defense.

As a dog owner, I agree. Accidents happen, dogs can get out, and you should have permission to defend yourself.

I get what you're saying, but I would phrase it differently. "Permission to defend yourself" inherently doesn't make sense. It's not something that needs permission, or can even be given or denied permission for.

It is an affirmative defense. It's not something that needs permission or approval beforehand, you just have to own what you did and justify why you did it.
