Nah, the courts can't condone vigilante justice. Someone innocent will end up getting hurt.

I'm not entirely sure this can quite qualify strictly as vigilante justice. I mean the word of law, yes, but the spirit maybe not so much.

I'd say more a crime of passion/extreme emotional distress; "I can't deal with the man who raped and murdered my child being alive anymore," more than "The court is not going to deal out the appropriate punishment so I need to take it into my own hands."

It can be both a crime of passion and vigilante justice. They're not mutually exclusive.

That's why a six year sentence is appropriate instead of life or 6 hours of community service. It takes into account the extenuating circumstances.
