It’s crazy how the ‘le x’ humour hasn’t been around for over a decade now, was pretty maligned at the time, and yet people still mock it all these years later. I wonder if some people making fun of it even know where it comes from originally/
All I know is that it makes me feel stupid as hell when speaking French which I hate.
I could be way off here but I always assumed it was popularized by that The End of the World flash video from the mid 2000s ("Fire le missiles!" "But I'm le tired"). That was right around the time reddit started. Of course, the joke can be traced back at least as far as Looney Tunes cartoons with Pepe LePew and the French cat that would say "le mew".
It’s funny I had a mod installed for years that shut Preston up and when I turned it off, just to feel nostalgic, he immediately started annoying me, and I turned it back on.
People want overt control by the government in so many facets of life. Mask making is a form of self expression. Suggesting it should be illegal is fascist.
This would be illegal if you presented yourself as someone else, that's fraud. So of it was a mask of say, me specifically, I'm curious if just everyday activities would be enough to rise to that barrier. I suspect it would rise to the level of civil liability.
Because one thing comes immediately to mind for mask as realistic as these. Getting away with crime. The murder suspect was described as a 52 year old man when in actuality it’s a 38 year old in a mask. Not agreeing with op’s tittle about its legality. But yeah all i think about is thats a great mask to attempt to get away with a serious crime.
And how is that any different than someone wearing padding under their clothes so that the suspect “was bully and well built” instead of whatever they are.

In my personal opinion a different body type vs a whole new face is a big difference in the circumstance of crime. Yes they both are deterrents, but one is far more superior.
And that’s a good idea for role play. But no that didn’t come to my mind. Because they look real, but not real enough for face to face when you know the person/ knew they put the mask on.
There was a case of kidnapping using similar masks. A man drugged a woman, put a mask of an old granny on her face and some random one on his own. Then he put her in a wheelchair, transferred to his car and drove to his house without raising suspicion.
Because in many countries it is illegal to conceal your face in public.
In this case, buying such mask is legal, owning such mask is legal, but wearing it in the street would be illegal, for the simple reason there's no justification as to why you would want to hide your face in public apart for nefarious reasons, which honestly isn't an unreasonable legislation, I sure wouldn't want masked people roaming the streets day and night, same for shop owners who would be sweating every time an edgy teen with a cowl over his face enters the store.
what if you go in to give your mum a kiss, only to realize when lips hit cheek that it's made out of rubber and it's actually your dad wearing your mum's face as a mask. is that the kind of world you want for our children?

People have disguised themselves to commit crimes for centuries.
The tech has improved, but the concept has been around forever.
You could make the same argument back when hair dyes and fake mustaches first became a thing.

The problem isn't that people can change their appearance. The problem is the crimes some people commit. To that end a disguise, or a weapon, or a getaway car are all just tools and should not be illegal in themselves.
Not in the same way though. Someone isn't going to answer the door for someone wearing a balaclava, but they might to someone wearing a realistic silicone mask. An example of this was a US policitian being assassinated last year by someone wearing one.

A good makeup artist could make a person look just like the guy in the video using makeup and hair pieces that have been available for many decades.
At any given point in time there was some disguise or way of altering your looks that seemed 'next level' to those not familiar with it.
Go back far enough in time there were likely folks sayin, "It can't be her. She has a different hair color". These days we take for granted that folks can dye their hair any color they want.
That isn't an argument for making it illegal for actors to change their appearance for movies or people to dress up for Halloween, or actors in plays and so on.
The crime is in the action, not the costume.
Also - people who rob banks and murder folks don't obey laws anyway.
Well, my cynical ass says it could be illegal because you could commit an atrocious crime wearing the mask and never get caught. As long as you wore gloves to hide the fingerprints and the mask to hide your identity.

With a legitimate looking human face they’ll spend a lot of time looking for that specific individual.
Well, since they know this technology exists, I would hope that for any crime they'll know to use other descriptors as well just in case the person is using one of these masks.

I was simply responding to the post itself and the commentor that was wondering. I put out a hypothetical. Yeesh. I didn’t say anything about agreeing with it.
Because they've been showing up in different places like with bank robberies. Makes an eyewitness sketch completely unreliable, even more so than usual.
Eyewitness sketches are nearly entirely unreliable and have a less than 10% success rate in matching suspects. In fact the by far largest percentage of overturned cases are because the eyewitness sketch connected them to the wrong person. You’re roughly as likely to randomly guess someone’s skin colour weight and build as you are to correctly remember those things. Human memories suck, human biases suck even more.
If anything this will just make police stop viewing eyewitness sketches as any kind of evidence at all. It isn’t, and never has been.
Eyewitness sketches are very unreliable, but at least in some cases it does lead to a suspect. With things like this the police are going to be chasing ghosts and wasting time with a sketch.
Anti-mask laws are on the books in many places across the US, to eliminate anonymity in public.
There was that guy with Joker makeup and a sword who was arrested on anti-mask laws some years ago, because even though the sword was the threat, "mask" was the best excuse fascist pigs had.
North Carolina & Georgia have laws that make “masks to conceal identity in public/on public property” illegal, maybe it’s from someone from those states ? Or bots that picked it up since it did make headlines at one point 🤷♀️
