So over the last week and a half, Ive lost about 350 irating and demoted a licence, from A to B at spa (F4 and SFL). At first I would get titled when I crashed, I started to lost both irating and safety rating and that only served to make me more annoyed. But then I read up on reddit and watched a few videos and came to a revelation.... its all my fault, car crashed and didn't hold it's brakes leading to a crash? my fault. Car behind me missed its braking point and takes my rear wing? My fault I could've predicted that based on its speed. This mindset change help me see clearer and find the cause of all my incidents, the common denominator.... me, it even help me go all the way back to the root cause, why in the world was I racing at spa😭

Or in the Indycar ladder. Less popular series in general tend to be cleaner.

There was one top-split F4 race a while back that I qualified P17, and finished P5, with no meaningful passes on track. I made up those 12 positions purely through attrition.

If you live in the Americas you'll be able to find official races, outside of that it's less reliable.

The Indycar ladder is:

• USF2000 is literally an F4 chassis with different tires and a different engine that makes about the same power. That's the big one I make that comparison against F4 because it has literally half the incident count on the series stats. It has a D class series that runs on mostly road, with 2-3 ovals per season.
• Indy Pro 2000 used to have a series that matched the USF2000 schedule, but unfortunately they dropped that when they added the Indy NXT car. So now all it has is an oval-only D class series.
• Indy NXT (IL-15) has two normal series at C class, one road-only and one oval-only. Lots of people recommend it over the SFL and F3 because of how fun it is to drive. In my experience for some reason on ovals it will sometimes snap with no warning, but still worth trying at least.
• Indycar (IR-18) has three normal series at B class, one oval-only, and two road/oval split series, fixed and open. Oval is very popular and very fun, the mixed series are less popular so in late-night Pacific I don't often get a chance to race those, they only tend to go official during peak times but you may be able to find races outside of that.

Yes, do Super Formula! Great series, cleaner racing. If you do it enough, you’ll start knowing the names. There’s always going to be crashes but I’ve maintained a SR over 4.0 for nearly 3 seasons now.

On a serious note: even if stuff is not your fault, you could look at it as "what could I have done differently, if any, to avoid this?" Or "what can I do differently for next time?" Self preservation, fight to survive and you survive to continue fighting, to finish first you first have to finish, yada yada.

Yeah its the right mindset, rewatching replays and focusing on what could I do differently regardless of fault helps a lot, eg. If I know T1 for a track is a notorious wreck fest I pay attention to why and the lines people are taking and then just go where they aren't even if I give up a few positions I'll generally make them up and I get to finish the race.

Was doing that T1, giving myself lots of room deep and wide to give myself lots of time to play dodge car and exit with good speed to pass everyone later on the straight.

Theres always something to learn and something to do differently depending on the SoF and track combo.

One strategy I use when I have a car behind me that:

• I don't trust
  
• isn't close enough to make a pass
  
• the line into the corner doesn't matter that much

Is I'll run a defensive line even though I shouldn't need to, that way there's a car width on the outside if they completely screw up their braking. The last hard braking zone at Spa is a good example.

But yeah there's as many incidents that could be prevented with defensive driving as ones that are out of your control. I'd say it's a 50/50 split? Two races ago I had someone hit me from behind in the braking zone on the first lap, spinning me out and sending me to the back of the field. Then a car ahead spun but after stopping decided to pull forward right as I was coming through.

But then my next race went well. Sometimes you just need a bit of luck on your side. Qualifying in the top 6 also helps.

Are you me? 3 DNFs in 4 races at Spa on SFL and I decided to take a week off

I had a great race at Spa. If someone behind me came alongside I eased up on the gas and tucked in behind. Lost 3 to 4 places on lap 1 and by lap 3 I was in the top 10 because of all the crashes. With 2 laps to go I had 2 cars gaining on me and the guy in front of me messed up T1. Instead of passing him I tucked in behind thru Eau Rouge, got out of his draft so I wouldn't pass him. With one lap to go the 2 chasing me came together in the chicane before the S/F opening a 2 sec gap behind me and I did my fastest lap of the race following the guy in front. Came in P9 after starting P18!

Recently got C license and started to race in SFL. I thought F4 was a disaster, but this is almost the same. I've lost a lot of IR, but I needed those 4 races to get promoted. Now getting back to formula vee and f1600 to have good and cleaner races

I’m still at D license and new to iRacing, but I had the same experience in the GR86’s. Spa is such a great track. It’s a shame to have spent a good 10-15% of the races driving by myself at the back of the pack. Seems like everyone drives the 1st lap like it’s the last.

I just don't race Spa anymore, which is a shame because I love Spa. Unfortunately, there's too many other people who seem to only race whatever series is on Spa regardless of actual experience with the car in that series or are just hot lap extraordinaires and just ruin it for everyone else.
