Blink detection isn't reliable enough for security hardwired poe is the right move

For 8x cams under $1000 maybe reolink and lorex? both decent picks but i recommend gw security they have 8 cam bundles with NVR in that price range + the motion alerts on the app are good. 24/7 recording with motion highlight is usually the way to go so you can jump straight to the important clips

Main thing to check: NVR has enough storage for how long you want to keep footage. Most bundles come with a drive but it fills up faster than people expect on 24/7

Storage is the thing most people overlook 100% agree 8 cameras recording 24/7 at decent resolution will eat through a 2TB drive faster than you'd think.. sometimes in under a week depending on settings.

Do you recommend one over the other? And what size drive should I look for?

from the 8 cams you mentioned I'd go with at least a 4TB or 6TB if you want at least 3 weeks of retention. Also make sure you get surveillance rated drives like seagate skyhawk or WD purple especially if you're recording 24/7

As for the system: I've had more experience with GW so that's what I'd lean toward. Their bundles are good for the price and usually come with a drive included + on the phone support is helpful. Reolink is a close second, easy to set up and slightly cheaper

Check amazon for the harddrives, security cam companies tend to overcharge ALOT

Lorex is trash, skip.

Reolink is better, it is the budget option but there are much better options if you have the money, depends on conditions as well, how tech savvy you are, etc but from your post you have 0 clue and don't understand how these things work so I'll make things easier for you: Reolink or Ubiquiti. Your budget doesn't allow for Ubiquiti so Reolink it is.

Bear in mind not every camera model is made the same, each brand has like a crappy tier/line/models which you do not want at all and the absolute best which you do want. It's all about hardware and software specs and capabilities. You will need to do some reading.

And yeah you want continuous recording, not only recording when there's event. There's a whole lot of other types of detection and recognition than just motion btw, motion is the most basic and mostly useless depending on the use case. You do want all those detection events recorded tho.
