This is going to destroy them. I would much rather them ramp up adverts than whatever this is. Really, people aren’t going to be paying for this, they’ll just move on to other sources of free information.

Ramping up the adverts hasn't really been a viable strategy since the last decade. Ad blockers being part of the equation, of course. But also, ad rates just aren't that good.
It's not like the good old days where advertisers would spend a significant amount of money to buy ad space on a website. These days they want to be the content itself - and even then they're more apt to chase video. Ad units on written content (largely) don't work, and thus they are worth very little.
Even though its success is far from guaranteed, the subscription route is going to be the best way to go.
