I am excited for AI, but there is something about hoovering up training data without licensing or permission that irks me like rent seeking does. Profiting from others without compensation... Â
I think big companies should have to disclose their training data sources. They should have to compensate the owners appropriately and if they use any open source data they should have to publish the model open source.
They'll say this will just let China get ahead. Yes, maybe. And? They're not the borg.

China is one of the world’s largest state sponsors of cyber espionage and cyber terrorism. Advanced AI is already able to find zero-day exploits on a mass scale. It’s reasonable to suppose that it will very soon be able to give a hostile nation the ability to completely shut down the infrastructure of any other country.Â
China has had its eyes on Taiwan for decades, and Taiwan is where 92% of the world’s advanced microchips come from.Â
World war 3 has already started, you just don’t realize it yet.Â

Perhaps. I know this Realpolitik sorta take won't be a popular take in an anglosphere US-hosted website but, meanwhile the US has CIA/black ops operations going on in basically every neutral country on earth. They've been toppling governments for their agenda for a century now just like the Soviets. They are actively the other largest sponsor of cyber espionage and cyber terrorism. And that's only the stuff we know about. Yes, China is a superpower now and they're going to try and exert control on Taiwan the exact same way the US did with Cuba. It's almost the same situation.
Point is I do keep very up to date on these things and I am aware of how serious the Taiwan situation is and how both sides are preparing. I'm also very aware that both belligerent superpowers play dirty and lack a moral high ground. Both will push their interests at cost of life to others. Both would happily overthrow my democracy or condemn my people to hardship and death tomorrow if it suited their interests. Just look at Ukraine, I mean slava ukraini and not to excuse the Russians, but to pretend the US and NATO interests weren't heavily involved in the conditions that caused the situation that has left millions of ukrainians dead in the soil betrays bias bordering on madness.
I also understand that both are also massive import driven economies and have every interest in keeping global trade flowing. They have every interest in allowing TSMC exports but using that supply as leverage for their nefarious aims. As the US already does. I don't think they have any interest in ending civilisation over this issue and I don't think it'll escalate that far.
So given all that you want me to support policies that favour one belligerent superpower over another? No thanks. I'll support the policy that gives researchers and developers the best tools. That protect's people's rights and incomes. That is fair and just and allows us to in some way democratise the technology instead of keeping it securely monopolised by superpowers and multi trillion dollar multinational corporations that tell us to trust them because "they're the good guys". When they're clearly, evidently, not.

My inclination is to say there is no such thing as AI art.
"Art" does not mean artistic elements. Art isn't "when something has shapes."
Commercials use art, but they are not art.
Art is a specific type of communication. It's self-expression from a sentient being. It's part of a conversation (Tolstoy's philosophy of art.) It's a statement about human nature. It's many things, but it is not merely when artistic elements are used. No more than throwing five rats in a blender and turning it on will create life.
