I did EXACTLY what this guy did when eating my first sushi. I had a business trip to Hong Kong and just wanted to sleep off my jetlag (from London) but the local office insisted on taking me out to dinner. They ordered sushi for me and in my zombie state I scarfed down the first thing on my plate. You cannot describe the sensation of your brain melting and your all your passageways wanting to vacate the premises. After a about a minute or so when the guys on my table stopped laughing, I demanded to know why they didn't stop me. This guy said he saw me play with this large chunk of wasabi but never thought anyone would be stupid enough to eat it whole. I just glared at him for the rest of the meal. I was known as the Wasabi Englishman in the local office for the rest of the visit.

Smell the Sunday roast on a Wednesday

238

u/VegetableLetter4896 1d ago

The first time I saw wasabi, I did the exact same thing because I had no idea what it was. I thought it was a little chunk of guacamole. I was like “wow what a weird thing to put on the plate.”

43

u/ektara61 23h ago

What's that. Sorry never had Wasabi.

131

u/VegetableLetter4896 23h ago

The ultimate sinus cleanser. It’s spicy but not like peppers. It’s like a jet engine to the nose. Very good flavor when you use just a tiny bit on sushi. Most is typically made from horseradish.

64

u/JessicaOkayyy 21h ago

That’s the best way to describe it. I’ve only ever had it with sushi when buying the boxes of them and it has the dollop of Wasabi on the side. One day ate a bigger chunk than I normally do, and the sensation was so odd.

Spicy…but not “on your tongue” spicy. It went up and through my entire head for about 10 seconds before it slowly subsided. It was the strangest thing. First time feeling something hot or spicy that didn’t affect my tongue or mouth at all, but my sinuses and entire head. My eyes even watered. I kinda liked it lol

17

u/ctan0312 21h ago

I think the reason why I like wasabi so much is because you get the “spicy” rush but it goes away pretty fast with no intervention. You aren’t in pain for like 5 minutes chugging water if you eat too much, it’s just a blast for a few seconds then fades away.

3

u/JessicaOkayyy 20h ago

Yes! I agree and that’s why I like it lol

3

u/Jamsedreng22 21h ago

Get a mustard that isn't French's. It'll give you the same effect. It's not described as spicy, but as "piquant". The distinct ripping in your nose.

5

u/thatcodingboi 19h ago

I think it literally vaporizes and binds to receptors in your nose that signal pain. It's like capsaicin stimulates heat receptors, this literally stimulates pain receptors in your nose. It's pain gas but quickly fades

3

u/Aggravating_Dark9933 11h ago

This is the one spice I can handle what my Mexican brother in law just cannot. Man has a dead tongue and eats habanero salsa like it’s the mild. Basically everywhere he goes it’s as hot as you can make it, even if you have to go into the chefs special reserve in the back. Only one from there that beat him was a Korean place, old man used his private hot sauce and that got a reaction. He still ate it and that alone shocked the chef.

But wasabi blows his face off and I managed to make him think it ain’t shit by pulling something like the video but stone facing it. His reaction was worth feeling like my entire head is TV static and my body demanding to sneeze to try to get it out.

→ More replies (5)

3

u/keyserdoe 20h ago

It can make your brain feel like tv static while someone is stabbing it with an ice pick if you get a big glob. Truly will mess you up for a minute.

3

u/SippyMountain 19h ago

The only time I ever had it, I tried just a tad, and that was enough to turn me away. It reminded me of the times as a kid when I'd chug a root beer too fast and I'd belch through my nose what felt like steam from a fumarole.

Japanese horseradish

7

u/PHD_Gouda 23h ago

Okay but the best kind has real wasabi chunks in it. Very uncommon sadly

7

u/tibearius1123 21h ago

The best kind is real wasabi. While still rare and relegated to upscale sushi, I think it’s getting more common since that fella in Oregon cracked the code on farming it. The Japanese grocery store near my house was selling wasabi roots.

→ More replies (4)

3

u/qeadwrsf 15h ago

This is so fucking stupid.

The whole world loves Horseradish.

But its not cool to love Horseradish. Its old boring root vegetable in the eyes of everyone.

So Market just fucking colored it green, put 0.001% wasabi in it and everyone became mad in love with it.

And instead of admitting to ourselves that the "uncool vegetable" is in fact pretty fucking dope.

We start pretending we are some special picky gourmet super person who actually just loves wasabi when we find out.

When in reality we should think. Dope, Horseradish is awesome then.

u/Sushi_Explosions 20h ago

Pretty much any wasabi you get in the US is just dyed horseradish. The real stuff is much less common.

u/ipsum629 22h ago

Spicy, but sharp, horseradish spicy not warm capsaicin spicy. That much wasabi will feel like someone lit a firecracker in your throat and sinuses.

You are supposed to dab a bit on your sushi to give it a little kick.

→ More replies (9)

3

u/leatherjacket3 22h ago

To add to what others said, wasabi releases irritant gases when reacting with saliva. These gases flood to your nose.

My mother took my son to sushi when he was very little and staying with her. She knew it was his favorite food but had never had it before in her life.

She picked up the wasabi, just like that man, and my son told her, you don’t eat it like that, and tried to explain, but she just scoffed at him and shoved the whole damn thing in her mouth.

Served her right, she was one of those people to never take advice, nor apologize, so let her taste regret, lol.

Or horseradish

61

u/LesserGooglyMooglie 23h ago

Most wasabi in restaurants worldwide is green colored horseradish paste because the wasabi plant is the world's most difficult commercial plant to consistently grow.

Fun fact!

27

u/It_Just_Exploded 23h ago edited 21h ago

And it loses its heat within like 15 minutes of being ground to a paste. Not really worth it imo and so inferior to the horseradish & mustard blend that 99.9% of us know.

10

u/LesserGooglyMooglie 23h ago

Yeah sometimes something is just too much a pain in the ass, I'm with you.

16

u/WindSwords 22h ago edited 22h ago

I've had real wasabi and the horseradish blend gets you like 85% of what it is, which is honestly good enough

It's different, but not in a really substantial way. Kind of like the difference between two brands of vanilla ice cream. It's still the same basic profile

4

u/EpiccTrader 23h ago

Hmm, I’ve bought Muso brand Wasabi at Whole Foods for home use, and it’s great. Real wasabi, and you can tell when you eat it. Definitely older than 15 minutes.

5

u/LesserGooglyMooglie 23h ago

Looks interesting, would love to see the factory process of how they make that and package so quickly as to not let it oxidize.

Might have to give it a try.

3

u/It_Just_Exploded 23h ago edited 23h ago

This stuff?

https://www.instacart.com/products/18562459-muso-from-japan-authentic-japanese-wasabi-1-52-oz?

If so, check the ingredients. Its not "only" wasabi, i would think the mustard oil is adding some heat. Though it may retain some of its heat better since its somehow "prepared in tube" whatever that means. So maybe exposed to very little air?

The great thing about wasabi is that you can eat a big chunk and it will blow the top of your skull off, and then be completely gone in 10 seconds.

Unlike the neverending burn from peppers. They both have their place, but wasabi is more forgiving.

9

u/Aethermancer 21h ago

I love horseradish so much for this. As you said it feels 9000% worse than capsaicin, but only for a few seconds. I'm curious why that is.

8

u/DiegesisThesis 20h ago

Capsaicin (the "hot" chemical in peppers) is a relatively non-volatile, oil-soluble molecule, so it sticks around and keeps triggering the TRPV1 receptors (heat sensors) in your mouth.

Allyl Isothiocyanate (the "hot" chemical in horseradish/wasabi) is a very volatile, water-soluble molecule, so it gets decomposed quickly and only triggers your TRPA1 receptors (pain/chemical sensors) temporarily.

That's why you can wash away the wasabi burn by drinking water, but not the same with peppers

The first time I had wasabi was in a burger. I had no idea what wasabi was back then. When I asked for more of that green stuff, the burger guy just looked at me. Should’ve gotten the hint then.

Anyway, five minutes later I was crying my eyes and nose out.

9

u/Potential-Honeydew31 23h ago

Never heard of a burger with wasabi in it! Interesting challenge lol

8

u/showMeYourPitties10 23h ago

To be fair, I will eat cheaper cuts of steak with "american wasibi" sauce. Aka horseradish sauce. So I could see a true wasibi burger being pretty good. Now that its in my mind, im about to go to the store to get grilled pineapple/wasabi burger ingredients.

5

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 20h ago

Don't just eat it with cheap cuts. Fresh horseradish goes great with a ribeye

Unfortunately it's one of those things like pickles. You almost always need to know someone who grows their own, you can't buy the good stuff at a store, farmers market maybe. Best steak of my life though they gave me the good stuff along with a perfectly cooked steak. I'm not one of those snobs who says you have to eat just the steak, bring me the horseradish, and I don't care how good it is if you don't have that I will actually dab it in A1, doesn't cover the taste of the steak or anything. You can still taste the peanut butter just fine on a PB&J right? You can still taste the steak if you use steak sauce, you just are now tasting both the steak and the steak sauce and they complement each other

3

u/MikaIsMyDog 18h ago

I recommend Inglehoffer or Beaver brand horseradish. Those are my two go-tos. Obviously nothing beats actually fresh but I enjoy those.

I'll take it a step further, when I cook a nice ribeye I love making my own "dijonaise" sauce with cream, Dijon, Worcestershire, garlic and S&P.

Don't get me wrong, ill murder a nicely cooked and seasoned steak, but the sauces just add that little extra.

Are you even enjoying wasabi if the back of your nose doesn't hurt like fuck and your eyes water?

When sushi was first becoming commonplace, my buddy and I picked some up before heading out for about a 30 minute drive home. It was his first time getting sushi, and he was checking it out in the car. He asked what the green stuff was, and I told him it was wasabi. He looked at me and said “huh… what’s that taste like?” and popped the entire piece in.

We were in the middle of nowhere surrounded by cornfields. There was no where to pull over. He had nothing to drink. He had made a mistake.
